"We have had a fantastic experience with Xtracare from day 1! They are extremely communicative and focused on customer service. They worked with us through several landscape design iterations with detailed drawings and pictures of plants they would be using, and did a beautiful and efficient job during installation. When we had questions or concerns following their work, they quickly got back to us to address any issues. Xtracare clearly cares about quality and keeping their promises. We look forward to working with them for future projects as well. Thank you Xtracare!"

"Great experience. The previous reviews were spot-on. This business is all Lazaro - you deal with Lazaro from the beginning and Lazaro is there every day throughout the job. He is personable, patient, explains everything clearly, is prompt, responsive, reasonably priced, sensitive to budget, creative coming up with solutions for unique situations, and flexible on scheduling and on changes that may come up during the job. I could tell he was the one when I first met him; he measured everything and listened carefully to my concerns and suggestions. This is entirely unlike the other highly-rated Angie's List big business from which I requested an estimate, who sent a young marketing guy out who provided a fancy folder, did not really listen (just kept saying "yeah, we can do that, and we'll throw in some other things at no additional cost"), took no measurements and provided an outrageous quote. I've attached a before and after picture. My driveway pavers were spreading apart due to poor drainage due to tire pressure over time. In addition to reinforcing the substructure and sloping the driveway correctly away from the house, Lazaro came up with solutions including beautiful gravel side drains and reinforcing the previously spread-apart area with a concrete border hidden under the gravel. He also reset our fence post that had been rising due to the poor drainage and installed a downspout drain under the reset driveway with a pop-up drain on the other side instead of having the downspout pour directly onto the pavers, which also may have led to our previous problems. And he was creative in redistributing our oil-stained pavers in a random pattern so they wouldn't be as noticeable. Great job."

"Cutting Edge did work for me a few years ago. They did a walkway using concrete pavers, extended downspouts, and installed a catch basin. I wanted to wait a bit after the installation before I did a review - didn't mean to wait this long. The installation went great. Cutting Edge was communicative before work was started and afterward when I had questions. Right after the project was done, a few of my neighbors noted how nice the walkway looked. The walkway still looks good and is in great shape. I've also had no issues with the downspouts or catch basin."

"We met with roughly 6 or more companies based out of the DC area before choosing Custom Stonescaping. Some either didn't give us the right comfort level regarding their experience, or others were charging outrageous prices (e.g., $40K for a wooden fence for an area that's 40' by 40'). We knew ourselves well enough to know we'd go over any estimate we were provided - simply because we'd change things as we go. So, we wanted to start with a price that would allow us to do just that, and that is add things as we go but stay within a budget. We had an immense amount of work done as a result of a prior home remodel and expansion, and the yard and driveway were trashed due to the home construction. We met with Horacio their PM, and we immediately liked his background (Civil Engineer). He's courteous and prompt, and I repeatedly bombarded him with email and phone calls during the entire process, and he answered and followed up on everything. I believe I worked their team (either no. 11 or 17) - I don't remember which unfortunately but they were rockstars and showed up every morning at the same time and worked throughout the day. I had the work done in late fall (for the back yard) and early winter (for the front yard and driveway), and they were adept at getting things completed under all conditions. They were fast and provided me with a lot of latitude to make changes along the way. We were concerned about dust and damage to the new home because of the yard and driveway work that needed to be done. To their credit they were cognizant of that and took the appropriate steps to ensure the home was protected during certain work phases. They've also been terrific at the post landscaping and stonescaping follow-up. Responding to all email and questions that I have, which I think says a lot about a company. I'd hire them again and recommend them to anyone that asks. Our end product looks great. We love the pavers on the driveway, the stone on the back patio, and the larger fire pit built into the patio."

"We want to share with you how pleased we are with the work James and his crew from Apex Masonry did on our new permeable driveway which looks beautiful. We’ve gotten many compliments from neighbors. It is often frustrating for homeowners to find a reliable contractor but James is highly professional and personable and his crew is friendly and hard working. He gave us a comprehensive scope of work and a price and delivered exactly what he said he would do on the schedule he provided. James clearly explained all facets of the work and how his crew would accomplish each task. We wholeheartedly recommend Apex Masonry and James and am sure you will be as satisfied as we are."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Silver Spring, MD

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
