"VERY impressed with the work and overall professionalism of Coast to Coast. From the proposal/quote stage all the way through payment, everything was fully communicated, executed quickly, and delivered with the utmost attention to detail —probably 2-3 weeks from first contact to finished work. They fixed the tuck pointing on our very old, crumbling limestone foundation and installed 3 glass brick windows. Even rough areas I would've expected them to miss because I hadn't explicitly pointed them out were touched up. Would definitely use again in the future. THANKS"

"We have used Pouls on previous occasions and, as usual, they did an outstanding job! Throughout the process, they ensured we understood exactly what to expect. The quality of the lighting components and the installation and cleanup work was top-notch. I would not hesitate to recommend Pouls Landscaping to anyone."

"The job went great. This is the second time I have used Pave Stone. Both jobs went perfect. This time around I needed them to raise the soil level and add new sod in the front and backyard. I also had them put in a patio in the backyard. Sergio gave me many options for the stone. The one he recommended looks great. I couldn't be happier. His team was professional and attentive. The job was not too big, so they finished in 2 days."

"Our building capstones around the roof parapet were installed during construction without a moisture barrier or wicking. Additionally, there as lots of need for Tuckpointing on the face of our building and the inside walls of the parapet. None had been done in the building since it was build over 10 years ago. Peter initially came out to do a walkthrough with me to prepare a bid. He was very thorough and professional, taking time to explain everything to me. Voytek handled the project once it began as my main point fo contact. He was extremely responsive and had everything very well organized. The project was completed on time and very professionally. I really enjoyed working with Voytek because of his responsiveness. He was quick to return calls and was onsite himself at times with the crew. He gave me a clear understanding of what work was being done and scheduling. Being in a self managed building means me and the rest of the board are often tasked with securing bids and organizing maintenance projects. If you are in Chicago and have had to do this, you know how difficult it can be to even get a contract to call you back after your initial inquiry. This was not the case with Voytek and Star and I would gladly work with them again and recommend them."

"I cannot say enough about what a great experience we had overall with John Construction.
Jan responded to my email inquiry immediately, and he was patient with my emails back and forth trying to find the best time to come out and give an estimate. When I finally found a good time for him to come out, he arrived on time and did a very thorough and honest inspection and assessment of the work that needed to be done. Rather than include more work than needed to be done, he explained that he only needed to grind out the damaged brick and would use a mortar to match the mortar that was still in good condition. (We had water damage from a leaky roof, so the damage was not widespread on the home.)
He sent over his estimate via email that same evening, and it was MORE than reasonable. I had secured estimates from other companies before John Construction came out; whereas a couple of the other estimates were a few hundred dollars more, one of the previous estimates was over double what Jan offered - which was reasonable and fair. Having to schedule based on my summer pay schedule, he was once again patient with finding a date to come out and do the work.
Jan and his partner came out on the scheduled date (a Saturday) - they arrived on time and were very professional, introducing the partner by name and ensuring that we knew exactly what would be done to the house. They got to work right away with the grinding, which took about 3 hours. They followed with a thorough clean up of the dust and then got right to work with the tuckpointing. Each time we came outside to see the progress, they both stopped and gave us an overview of how things were going; once again, very friendly and professional. When they finished a very long and hot day of work, their clean-up job was impeccable, especially considering the messy job that the grinding entails!
Since we weren't home when they finished and left, Jan sent an email to follow up to ensure that we were happy with the work. Overall, I can't say enough about John Construction and our experience with them. We will undoubtedly go to them in the future for all of our masonry needs!"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Skokie, IL

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
