"Initially I had a tank alert go off and called A-Advance Septics to pump my septic system and troubleshoot the alarm. The required services occurred over 2 days (12/1 & 12/3/2020). On 12/1, Matt V. was the service tech that came to locate/dig the tank lids. Matt was very professional in his work when pumping out the two tanks (septic and pump). Matt was very informative and helpful answering my questions, especially when I did not know about the pump tank plus the need to clean outlet baffle filter annually. Thus the need for replacement lid/risers for future access. Ray B. and Doug G. were also very professional and were able to troubleshoot the tank alarm issue and isolate to failed pump (26 years old) and need to be replaced along with new junction box. On 12/3, EJ M. and Doug G. returned to install 3 sets of lid/risers, junction box, and pump replacement. EJ and Doug were very professional in their work and were also informative upon answering my questions. Overall I was very satisfied on the work that was completed and definitely would recommend and call A-Advanced Septics for future service (I liked the feature on the new lids with your company name and phone number embossed, no need to jog my memory or scramble looking for company name or phone number). Thanks, Chester F."

"I am a remote landlord (property is in WA, I am in FL) and I had a septic system fail due to float issues in the 3rd tank. Sewage was backing up into lower floor (daylight basement) shower. NASTY!! I could not reach prior septic tech from a different company, and decided to go with Sam Skinner. I made the mistake of having a tenant manually turn on the pump in the 3rd tank, and he was supposed to turn it off after 30 minutes, but he got distracted and let it run all night. It pumped itself dry and burned out. Sam diagnosed my entire septic system as part of the service call, as I requested, and notified me of additional things I should plan for, e.g., ready to be pumped, and drain field pipes have some partial blockage, that should be cleaned out in the foreseeable future, and he supplied probe camera pictures showing the blockage. Sam identified the floats issue, fixed them, rerouting cords to not get hung up again, and tying them down properly. He also verified the pump had failed, and 3rd tank electrical box was having infiltration issues, so I had him replace both the pump and the box. Sam completed the work, sent me (remote landlord) pictures of the new pump and other items he had acquired to install. He completed the work same-day and I had a functioning septic system. He also improved the situation in the first two tanks during his diagnosis/inspection process. Sam was prompt, responsive, pleasant to work with, and highly knowledgeable about septic tanks and systems in general, and my setup in particular. I know more than I care to about septic systems, and Sam knew exactly how my setup worked and what was needed, and didn't try to BS me or talk down to me. He calibrated his communication quickly to my level of knowledge, just right. Sam was also prompt in getting out to the work site, and timely and clear in all his communication. I plan to use Sam for all my future septic system work at this property, aside from pumping the tank, which he doesn't do, but he was able to give me tips and contractor recommendations for the pumping. The cost was within reason; when is a septic repair like this ever "cheap"? I am satisfied that Sam provided good value for my money and he definitely solved my septic problem, and my tenants are happy there is no more poopy sewage backing up into the bottom floor shower stall. I give Sam Skinner Construction my highest recommendation for Septic System work and problem solving in Western Washington, aside from tank pumping, which of course he doesn't do."

"My water heater had begun slowly leaking and I called Vortex needing a semi-emergency replacement done. They were able to assess the model required (it was not a basic model) over the phone and made the extra effort to get a replacement ordered and ready by the next day. Everyone was professional, friendly and helped me understand the work being done. Overall I am super satisfied and will be making Vortex my first call for plumbing needs in the future."

FAQs for septic system installation and replacement projects in Tacoma, WA

The smallest standard septic system uses a 500-gallon tank, which costs between $875 and $1,150 installed. This size works well for single-occupant dwellings with minimal wastewater production. However, many local regulations specify minimum tank sizes, so check with your building department before committing to this compact option. Some jurisdictions require at least 750 gallons regardless of home size to ensure adequate waste processing capacity.

The installation timeline varies based on site conditions, permit processing, and contractor schedules. The process includes obtaining permits, conducting soil tests, excavation, tank placement, leach field construction, and final connections. Weather conditions, soil challenges, and inspection scheduling can all affect the overall timeline. It's wise to begin planning well in advance of when you need the system operational.

The most economical approach is to install a conventional anaerobic system with a plastic tank. To minimize costs while maintaining legality, obtain multiple quotes from licensed installers, consider scheduling during their slower seasons, and handle basic site preparation yourself. Never skip permits or required testing to save money—illegal installations can result in significant fines and mandatory removal, ultimately costing far more than doing it right initially.

Regular pumping helps prevent system failures and extends operational life. Most small systems require pumping every three to five years, though frequency depends on household size and usage patterns. Pumping services cost between $290 and $530, making this maintenance expense relatively minor compared to potential repair costs ranging from $500 to $2,600 for neglected systems. Establishing a regular maintenance schedule based on your installer's recommendations helps avoid costly emergency services.
