"So we started in the garage, (huge job) then moved to the house, starting with my little garden house and basement. Darla and Ruth were amazing, this was at times a dusty and gritty job, but they are not afraid to tackle anything!! My kind of people! Then we continued inside the house, the attic was pretty full of collectibles, antiques and lots of clothing. We took almost all the clothing and some household items in good shape to Goodwill Industries here locally (so far 8 truck loads) but I feel this will do a lot of good for some people. "Hello, My name is Phil Carr-Jones, I am reviewing my experience of working with and building my own kitchen, using cabinets and doors from Arkansas Wood Door. While I am an Episcopal Priest, it turns out I get to do a lot of things they don't teach you in seminary. Over the years, I have had to get fairly skilled in all the trades, including, no surprise, carpentry. But I am by no means an expert. For instance, I employed a retired carpenter to help out with the crown molding and other trim. Apart from that though, this is all my and my wife's work. So let me state up front, Arkansas Wood Doors is the go to place for the DIY’er who is thinking of remodeling their own kitchen. Here's why: I searched the web for months, literally doing comparisons and research on flat pack rta cabinets. I went to the big box store for a design and pricing in their three lines of cabinets, and I went in for a consult with a small custom shop in my area. Here's what I found. 99 outof 100 rta cabinet companies have their product made in china which means the standards for formaldehyde are going to be as fishy as they smell, plus you can only get cabinets in fixed sizes so if you looking to eeck out every last inch of space you're going to lose a lot and you'll be using a lot of filler strips wasting what could have been useful storage. If you want to go custom, then you only have less than a handful of online options, companies that will make to order in any dimension. For instance, I only wanted an 8 inches deep spice cabinet to allow for greater working room over the counter. My wife and I are pretty serious about cooking from pastries to mains and sides. We want a very serious kitchen. Plus, I'll tall so I needed the room. In any case, if you want something custom your choices online are limited. The big box stores don't really do custom and are just as limited in their options as are the online rta places. Most online rtas offer far cheaply made boxes with construction methods less sturdy. I have found that if I buy cheap, I shouldnt expect my kitchen to hold up past a few years. The finish will fade. The drawers will warp. The joints will open up. The big box stores basically offer the same thing, too. When I go to a big box store to buy something, I do it knowing I probably willl get a year out of it, whether that’s a lawn chair of a power tool. I mean when was the last time you regretting spending too much money on a better grade of power tool? So if you want quality, a better and safer grade building material and much wider choices in sizing then your basically down to three or four options. I went with Arkansas Wood Door and am completely pleased and impressed by the experience. Now I could have spent twice what I did and gone to a small custom shop and gotten the same thing, but I am in to saving money and frankly I enjoy the challenge. AWD worked with me directly. Working up the order and getting the plan for each box just right. If you have never designed and built a kitchen before, there are plenty of tips and guidance on the web and I recommend you heartily research all of the aspects and complications involved. I hit a couple of unexpected bumps. But more about that below. So do your research. For instance you can save a lot of money by building the plinths yourself and only order squared off boxes without the toe kick. By making the platform on which you place the lower cabinets first, you can get that plumb and level, so throwing up the boxes is a breeze. And again, the cabinets are also less expense, a complete all around win. AWD uses an easy system for matching up box parts so assembly was easy. No special tools required. Given the many parts and I used a mix of frameless and face framed cabinets, there was a moment or two when in amongst all the materials I got nervous about having everything I needed, but low and behold, all was right there in the end. I also recommend the concept from French cooking "mis en place" that is have all your ingredients in place and all your tools where you need them before starting out. Also, it was a lot easier to work with my wife than doing it alone, but I did a few by myself and so if that is your only option than you should have no problem. I've assembled a lot of cheaper Swedish flat packed furniture in my day, and the quality and sturdiness of AWD leaves no doubt about how long these will last. Just rock solid. Great thing about AWD is the cost to quality ratio. Cant beat it. Which also means if you make a mistake the replacement is so reasonable it becomes not big deal. I mis-measured one box and so I needed to order the right size. Worked out fine, but that was because AWD had an incredibly fast turn around. The other few reliable companies are several weeks to months. And these other places are crazy expensive. And in truth, the other companies are a complete rip off on trim and accessories. AWD pricing was so amenable that my mistakes cost me so little in comparison with what I was saving. So there's a built in confidence for the first timer. Also AWD made one mistake on the placement of a hinge in two doors. They immediately and without question remade them and sent them out in under ten days. You just can't get that service anywhere in the custom cabinet world. It was so affordable I upgraded on one side to black walnut. Trying doing that at the other quality shops. The quality of the roll out drawers and top drawer boxes is superb and the hinges and under-mount sliders are top grade excellent. The hardware was the easiest part frankly. Their system, for lining up the hardware is just so easy. Drill driver is all you need as the placement is already leveled for you. SO: high end quality custom built cabinets, superior custom support, fastest turnaround in the marketplace, most affordable pricing out there, excellent hardware, and oh yeah, I almost forget, color choices. They offer complete line of lacquer - just pick a SW color and they'll match it. SO completely and truly custom for a fraction of cost without sacrificing any quality. The Rev. Philip Carr-Jones"

"Jeremy Cottingham was recommended to me for some projects I needed to have completed in my home.  He was responsive, showed up on time and very professional.  His pricing was very reasonable.  I recently had a lot of remodeling on my house and there were a few items that my last contractor did that needed to be redone.  Jeremy re-made some attic storage space doors that blended right into the walls.  They came out amazing!  He also opened up a closet and installed bifold doors.  I was so happy with the job he did I contracted him to finish off a cabinet that my original contractor left undone.  I was more than satisfied with the results! It came out beautifully..I was more than satisfied!  I plan to use Jeremy to do a custom cabinet work and shelving around a fireplace I am having installed.  I have no question it will come out great.  I highly recommend his work.

"Luis and his team are AMAZING. From the very start, Luis was extremely responsive to phone calls and emails. He got back to me right away and was able to set up a time to do an estimate within days. He came to see the apartment and had multiple creative suggestions for how to use my space best. He was very organized when it came to submitting an estimate. All items were clearly delineated with prices and work to be done. But, in reality, he did a lot more work than he had listed on those sheets. I had many, many contractors come to give me an estimate, but Luis was unique because I could tell that he genuinely cared about how the place would look and wasn't just trying to get me to sign on. If I mentioned things, he would tell me upfront if it would be difficult or not possible, but his motto is "everything is possible" so in the end he was able to do a tremendous amount in the apartment. The unit I bought was built in the 1960s, had never been updated and had not been taken well care of. There was a TREMENDOUS amount to be done, and Luis and his team did a remarkable job. They really made my place look the best it could possibly look. They are perfectionists and independant thinkers. I never needed to tell them to do or change things - if something didn't look right, they would change it on their own. They are tremendously hard-working and extremely respectful of my things in the apartment. They would even take their shoes off once the hardwood was installed to keep the floors clean! The company is called Fine Painters, but they do a lot more than painting. They did a complete renovation from start to finish including carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, and more. I live in a building with multiple restrictions for who can do work in the building. Luis prepared all the plans, drawings etc that were needed for approval. Luis even paid for and took a course in removal of flooring with asbestos glue because that was what was required by my building even though they already knew the correct procedures. They didn't try to sell me things at a high mark-up like many other contractors do. I bought my own materials, but when I needed a suggestion (i.e. tiles, hardwood floors) Luis had great suggestions and passed on his contractor discount to me. They worked in a timely fashion and were always willing to help me with anything I needed, even if it was not in the scope of the project they were working on. They often went to the store to pick up things I had forgotten or didn't know where to get. They are very caring. Their work ethic is unmatched. They follow-up on every details with the job from start to finish. The bottom line: the work they did was unbelievably good and they were a total pleasure to work with. If you are looking for a contractor for any project, big or small, do not hestitate to have them give you an estimate. Once you meet them, you will be sold! "I highly recommend Roca Construction.  Mr. Roca showed up with his team ? on time and ready to work. 

He carefully sealed off the room from the rest of the house to minimize dust in my home and began demolition.  The thorough clean up after the demo by his crew was much appreciated.  Then the room was fully insulated.  They even uncovered a channel that went al the way up to the second floor between the walls that had never had insulation before. Mr. Roca suggested that they build in a box to contain the insulation and properly insulate the upper floor room.  This to an extra day and he did it at a fair and very small increase to the bill. I am sure that the savings to our gas bill will make up for the small increase in price. The new second floor certainly made the  second floor room much warmer immediately. They insulated the room they were renovating very thoroughly - cleverly reusing some of the insulation that had been there before. 

Then they framed in a new subfloor and replaced sheetrock where it needed replacing. They installed a new wooden floor ? thinking through how the longest pieces of wood should be used.  They also framed in a new ceiling replacing the ugly plywood fake beadboard with beautiful real beadboard - which comes in 2-board slats. It is a lot of work to install this material. Then the entire room was primed and painted.  Using window trim that we specially ordered from a lumber yard - milled to match the other trim in our house, they did a perfect job mitering the corners. They also, installed cove molding - which was constructed from three different cove molding pieces (complicated) as to match the historic cove molding. Then the  final painting was completed.

Mr. Roca is an excellent contractor. His team is professional, highly skilled, responsive, careful, and neat.  They are real perfectionist. The mitered corners were skillfully completed. The floor and ceiling beautiful and level, and the paint job was perfect.  The sidewalk and apron paving was also perfect ? so well done that five of our neighbors hired Roca to re-do their sidewalks too. Now we have a whole block of beautiful sidewalks. 
 
Mr. Roca's team are friendly and quiet. They cleaned up the job site each evening.  They have a good work ethic and show up on time. They did not rush the work and as a result  their work product was excellent too.  The job took about 3 weeks. 

We are very picky about renovations on our historic home. We have fired more than one contractor over the years. My husband is an amateur woodworker - he is very picky about work on the house.
