"The work went well. Dead and live weeds were removed or poisoned. Plants, including cacti were trimmed and debris removed, the rocks raked out evenly. One the watering lines was cut while a lantana plant was trimmed, but repaired. Other lines that needed extensions were fixed so that the plant could be watered better. The irrigation system was checked to ensure it was working properly and ok'd. They were instructed to move half of a Totem cactus cluster to the opposite corner of the yard, but somehow a miscommunication happened and the workmen dug up and tried to replant all pieces of the plant cluster in the opposite corner. When this error was noticed, they moved two of the relocated pieces back to its original position, but didn't bury it deep enough and one piece began to lean out of the ground and the other piece fell and broke. The pieces that were left in the opposite side of the yard also leaned over and one part of that cluster fell and cracked, also. The plant ended up with enough breakage that the original plant was trimmed so that heads were retained and replanted in two clusters of three at opposite corners at the back of the yard. The tall totems were severely compromised into restarting their growth from the shorter pieces, but I felt that they still had enough height to look attractive and had a chance to reroot and grow from the heads again on each side of the yard and probably will grow up looking good. The crew also sprayed Roundup and pre-emergent over the entire yard areas to kill what was low and sprouted and to prevent seeds from sprouting, as well to preserve their work. I appreciate All Terrain's professionalism, commitment to duty and follow-through, maintaining high standards for customers, and taking responsibility for damage. They were more than others I had interviewed or experienced in the past, but I have full confidence in All Terrains' level of professionalism. I think the maintenance supervisor, Chris is largely the reason for such a good turn out."

"Our HOA wanted to correct some advanced erosion in our subdivision. This included, site clearing, earthwork, grading and the installation of 11 tons of rip-rap stone. I met with Josh and Lacey, discussed the scope and received a very competitive bid to do the work. They did an outstanding job, kept me up-to-date and left a very clean work-site. They are a hard-working, reliable contractor who I would hire again. Sincerely - Bill Rutherford, HOA President, Marana, AZ."

"The gentleman who completed the work were quick and professional. The finished product turned out really nice. They were able to schedule the work quickly once I located the pavers. Management could be more cognizant of surroundings when chastising workers, and do so privately or quietly. Communication could be fine tuned, but I would use them again if I need additional work."

"First of all, my first positive experience with the owner Steve came weeks before he and his crew showed up to fix all of my problems. I was using Angie's List to call around and get quotes from other landscapers. After I thought I had found one, Steve returned my call in the evening out of courtesy because I had left him a message. I told him upfront that I had chosen someone else, but he was so nice and thoughtful that he still asked questions about my problems. We then proceeded to talk about 20 minutes on the phone as he gave me helpful tips, advice, and taught me the general process of how an irrigation system works. I was so taken back by his effort and genuine curiosity, that when my initial plans fell through I immediately called him back and made an appointment with him.

He was very thorough in his estimate and didn't cut any corners, insisting that he'll look over both my front and back yards for any other issues. His pricing was very reasonable. And on the morning of our appointment, he and his crew were punctual and fast to fix everything up. He spent 15 minutes with me afterwards to demonstrate how the new irrigation system timer works, etc. It's been 7 months since he came over, and my system is still humming along perfectly. I'd recommend him to anybody for their landscaping needs.

"The work was completed quickly with great attention to detail. They communicated well as one day they had to leave early to attend to a sick child. All throughout they communicated about options and alternatives when unexpected circumstances arose. Overall outstanding workmanship and professionalism. They truly wanted us to be happy with the project and we are. Have already had positive responses from neighbors who have seen the pavers. Highly recommended and I will call them back when I am ready to install artificial turf."

"Jose and his helper did an outstanding job. Worked very hard and removed/hauled away 8-10 large Agave (including roots) from my backyard. That is a huge job in 100 degree heat and the ground extremely hard! Clean up was very good. Friendly and extremely reasonable pricing. I would definitely hire him again and have already requested his assistance in removing a tree from my yard."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Vail, AZ

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
