"Geoff Byers transformed my kitchen far beyond my imagination and gave me a drool-worthy master bathroom that captures the attention of all who see it. I first contacted him with my idea for moving the refrigerator back into the kitchen from the pantry/utility room where the previous owner put it, relocating the washer & dryer, and making one of two bathrooms wheelchair accessible (for potential future needs). After asking him whether I was wasting my time and money or not, Geoff presented me with a few alternative designs a couple weeks later. We went from there. The work included tearing out a small bathroom; demolishing a brick fireplace from chimney down to subfloor foundation; relocating sliding glass doors and the hot water heater; walling off two doorways and creating four new ones; and reconfiguring the pantry/utility room into a nice laundry area, utility closet, and short hallway. Geoff used the space from the small bathroom tearout to expand the original kitchen area. He added the space from the demolished fireplace to what was left from the general kitchen area to create a brand new master bathroom with attached large closet. (Don’t worry-- he put a wall between the new kitchen and bathroom!) The kitchen’s new footprint now allows for double the cabinet space that I had before, an additional pantry cabinet, and room for a table and chairs. It also includes two beautiful garden windows. Oh, and the refrigerator is in there, too. The new master bathroom includes a double vanity and a curbless tiled shower. Originally planned to have glass doors, the shower is so large—seriously, it’s big enough for three people—that the doors became unnecessary. The attached clothes closet is nearly the size of the small bathroom that was torn out to expand the kitchen. Geoff’s experience and background enable him to offer design ideas or troubleshoot your own. Additionally, he is not shy about telling you what he thinks about your plans if you ask him. If yours is the only job that he has scheduled at the time, Geoff will be on-site every day, all day, and actively working. Even when jobs overlap, you will see him regularly. If he hits an unexpected roadblock, he has the know-how to blow through it with minimal delay…or none at all. He has one primary assistant, and the plumber, electrician, and drywall person that he uses are skilled and respectful. If you are interested in a summary of the work that has been accomplished each day, Geoff will patiently walk you through a “show and tell” before he leaves. Just let him know that is what you want. He will also tell you what the future steps are—for the next day, the next week, or the project overall. Furthermore, he is quick to respond to any communications that you send him. "Hello, My name is Phil Carr-Jones, I am reviewing my experience of working with and building my own kitchen, using cabinets and doors from Arkansas Wood Door. While I am an Episcopal Priest, it turns out I get to do a lot of things they don't teach you in seminary. Over the years, I have had to get fairly skilled in all the trades, including, no surprise, carpentry. But I am by no means an expert. For instance, I employed a retired carpenter to help out with the crown molding and other trim. Apart from that though, this is all my and my wife's work. So let me state up front, Arkansas Wood Doors is the go to place for the DIY’er who is thinking of remodeling their own kitchen. Here's why: I searched the web for months, literally doing comparisons and research on flat pack rta cabinets. I went to the big box store for a design and pricing in their three lines of cabinets, and I went in for a consult with a small custom shop in my area. Here's what I found. 99 outof 100 rta cabinet companies have their product made in china which means the standards for formaldehyde are going to be as fishy as they smell, plus you can only get cabinets in fixed sizes so if you looking to eeck out every last inch of space you're going to lose a lot and you'll be using a lot of filler strips wasting what could have been useful storage. If you want to go custom, then you only have less than a handful of online options, companies that will make to order in any dimension. For instance, I only wanted an 8 inches deep spice cabinet to allow for greater working room over the counter. My wife and I are pretty serious about cooking from pastries to mains and sides. We want a very serious kitchen. Plus, I'll tall so I needed the room. In any case, if you want something custom your choices online are limited. The big box stores don't really do custom and are just as limited in their options as are the online rta places. Most online rtas offer far cheaply made boxes with construction methods less sturdy. I have found that if I buy cheap, I shouldnt expect my kitchen to hold up past a few years. The finish will fade. The drawers will warp. The joints will open up. The big box stores basically offer the same thing, too. When I go to a big box store to buy something, I do it knowing I probably willl get a year out of it, whether that’s a lawn chair of a power tool. I mean when was the last time you regretting spending too much money on a better grade of power tool? So if you want quality, a better and safer grade building material and much wider choices in sizing then your basically down to three or four options. I went with Arkansas Wood Door and am completely pleased and impressed by the experience. Now I could have spent twice what I did and gone to a small custom shop and gotten the same thing, but I am in to saving money and frankly I enjoy the challenge. AWD worked with me directly. Working up the order and getting the plan for each box just right. If you have never designed and built a kitchen before, there are plenty of tips and guidance on the web and I recommend you heartily research all of the aspects and complications involved. I hit a couple of unexpected bumps. But more about that below. So do your research. For instance you can save a lot of money by building the plinths yourself and only order squared off boxes without the toe kick. By making the platform on which you place the lower cabinets first, you can get that plumb and level, so throwing up the boxes is a breeze. And again, the cabinets are also less expense, a complete all around win. AWD uses an easy system for matching up box parts so assembly was easy. No special tools required. Given the many parts and I used a mix of frameless and face framed cabinets, there was a moment or two when in amongst all the materials I got nervous about having everything I needed, but low and behold, all was right there in the end. I also recommend the concept from French cooking "mis en place" that is have all your ingredients in place and all your tools where you need them before starting out. Also, it was a lot easier to work with my wife than doing it alone, but I did a few by myself and so if that is your only option than you should have no problem. I've assembled a lot of cheaper Swedish flat packed furniture in my day, and the quality and sturdiness of AWD leaves no doubt about how long these will last. Just rock solid. Great thing about AWD is the cost to quality ratio. Cant beat it. Which also means if you make a mistake the replacement is so reasonable it becomes not big deal. I mis-measured one box and so I needed to order the right size. Worked out fine, but that was because AWD had an incredibly fast turn around. The other few reliable companies are several weeks to months. And these other places are crazy expensive. And in truth, the other companies are a complete rip off on trim and accessories. AWD pricing was so amenable that my mistakes cost me so little in comparison with what I was saving. So there's a built in confidence for the first timer. Also AWD made one mistake on the placement of a hinge in two doors. They immediately and without question remade them and sent them out in under ten days. You just can't get that service anywhere in the custom cabinet world. It was so affordable I upgraded on one side to black walnut. Trying doing that at the other quality shops. The quality of the roll out drawers and top drawer boxes is superb and the hinges and under-mount sliders are top grade excellent. The hardware was the easiest part frankly. Their system, for lining up the hardware is just so easy. Drill driver is all you need as the placement is already leveled for you. SO: high end quality custom built cabinets, superior custom support, fastest turnaround in the marketplace, most affordable pricing out there, excellent hardware, and oh yeah, I almost forget, color choices. They offer complete line of lacquer - just pick a SW color and they'll match it. SO completely and truly custom for a fraction of cost without sacrificing any quality. The Rev. Philip Carr-Jones"

"We started with just a quote for the foundation, but after some discussion and flexibility on the part of Dan and Belletto we decided to do the foundation and building construction with them.   During the permit process we encountered some delays due to wetland delineation.  Stephanie in the Belletto office was absolutely amazing during this process.  She kept us informed during her work with the Corps of Engineers and while getting someone out to identify the boundary of the wetlands.  Once the permit was secured and out yard finally dried out they poured the foundation and had the garage up in a week.  Very satisfied, now once we dry out again, they're coming back to extend our driveway and lay a concrete pad.

The original plan was for Diana Construction to do a full remodeling of my Master Bathroom (MBth), as well as a Half Bath (HBth).  The HBth was so-so in condition to start with, but the MBth had sorely needed help since the day I had bought the place.  I had decided back then that when I did have a remodeling it would have marked improvements for my needs (such as a shower with ceiling-high tile, and doors & shower spray high enough to handle a near 6-ft guy without him having to stoop deeply; this also included new chair-height toilets for comfort).  The DC contractor representative, Pete Rivera, walked me through the separate contracts for both rooms, and using the Angie?s list deal for the MBth.  Later he drew up a similar albeit scaled down version of the contract for the HBth.  I need to repeat here that the original Angie?s List deal was meant for bathroom work, and was so applied to the MBth work.  The upgrades and additional requirements in the MBth were what raised to cost so; also the HBth was done as a completely separate contract.  

1. Master Bath:  The work on the MBth included removal of pretty much everything. The team nicely gutted the place to start from scratch (while carefully remaining within the assigned dimensions of that room, in accordance with strict HOA rules).  The team rebuilt the flooring (set in mortar) to equal the old flooring, and then added a layer of dura-rock (tile backer) for my tub/shower to reach the ceiling (for later installation of the tiles themselves.  After the tiling and painting, a cast-iron tub brought up and installed with a tall set of sliding doors.  To make the bath even more special, I had DC install a niche (also tiled) in the middle of the shower wall.  Great for placing shampoo and other items!  To top it off ? and to assist me in maneuvering in the shower with some stability, Pete added a combination short grab-bar & shelf for bath items. My bathroom now has a vanity sporting a granite top this time, with recessed ceiling lights, a larger custom all-wood medicine cabinet, and an additional larger wooden wall cabinet over the new toilet.  Finally, an old rickety bathroom closet was revitalized with new open shelving plus a built-in cabinet below with its own granite top for show and practicality.  In the end, this bathroom was transformed from the poor example it was.  At a mere 52 sqft, it's not like those huge palatial bathrooms you?d typically see in ads, but the effort done within that fixed space was beautiful to me!

2. Half-Bath:  As described above, the HBth work was a scaled down version of the MBth.  Like the MBth, the DC team installed tiling, fresh paint, and cabinetry (scaled down of course) with a new sink, faucet, mirror, a beautiful lighting fixture and again a chair-height toilet.  I?ll be adding a little set of shelves myself, over the toilet, but this bathroom has turned out to be a pretty little package.

Concluding remarks: When all was done, I now have a gorgeous pair of bathrooms!  I admittedly wasn't thrilled that the final costs incurred were a few factors above the original Angie?s Deal; but I fully understand that this was something to be expected, given the fact that I had tacked on additional work to this contract; plus, I had very much wanted to upgrade the quality of both bathrooms.  So I accepted that some of the items required for this task would not come cheap, but they will in the long run give great value and are built to last (e.g., cast-iron tub beats cheapo fiberglass anytime).  The DC people were doing really hard work (tearing up the old tile and mortared flooring, cutting and setting tiles, and hauling that iron tub up three floors), but all acted like pros.  Pete Rivera proved to be an excellent employer and manager ? smart, experienced, with a good eye for décor, and not afraid to get his hands dirty or banged up.  I am impressed!  In the future, I believe there may come the opportunity for more work on my place ? and so I?ll keep DC on my speed dial (and of course, keep an eye out for any Angie?s List deals for that later day).
