"The roof that W. E. Griffin's craftsmen put on our home surpasses our original roof both aesthetically and structurally.  We're very proud of it.  Matt Hoffman was our contact person with the company, his technical expertise and desire to do the job correctly -- not just put on patches that would last a year or so -- were key reasons we chose W. E. Griffin.  This company's niche is meticulous work designed to last; they're not aiming to be the most inexpensive in the short run but rather to provide value in the long run.  My wife wants to keep our house for quite a while and perhaps pass it along to one of our children so W. E. Griffin fit well with our goals.  When the Griffin crew removed our original shingles and underlayment they found that the builders had used thin plywood on top of rafters with the maximum allowable spacing between them.  The intense sun we have in the summers had started to deteriorate the glue that holds together the layers making up the plywood so Matt suggested we replace it with new, thicker plywood.  He thought that otherwise we would have new shingles nailed to a soggy foundation which is not a scenario for a long lasting roof.  That's the kind of interaction we wanted with a home repair company: technically sound advice that will help us find the best solutions for upgrading and maintaining our home.  We accepted the suggestion and had all the plywood replaced.  Matt also found that our rafters were short which meant that our old roof ended just flush with the walls.  He suggested extending the rafters out which creates proper eaves.  Again we went with his suggestion.  The new eaves will help keep rain off the exterior walls and windows (which we hope to replace soon) and really add some needed architectural detail to the house.  W. E. Griffin also replaced our gutters, adding two new downspouts to make sure heavy rains go through the gutter system and don't just flow off the roof, another welcomed improvement.  This company offers a much needed combination of technical insight and careful workmanship to implement that insight.  I would recommend them to anyone, most especially to those looking for lasting solutions."

"The cleaning was done very well. Our home just had new carpets installed and was empty of any furniture for rental. The property managers toured the home for showing and they were very impressed.

"Gutter pros sent 2 people to my house to go over all the details and give me an estimate.  They were very knowledgable and answered all my questions - even those I didn't even know I had.  They showed up on time and had a sample of the product for me to look at.  I did not decide on the spot as it was a big investment, and was thankful they did not pressure me.  I called them after about 5 days and we agreed on a final price and signed the contract.  It was installed early Feb 2015 - about 1 week after I signed the contract.  It took 1 person about 2 hours to do the work.  So far it looks nice and strong.  The real test will be in the fall when all the leaves fall to see how it holds up.  I am looking forward to never having to see leaves flowing out of my gutters and not having to worry about cleaning them out.  I will update in October to write how they hold up.

FAQs for copper gutters service projects in Washington, DC

Copper gutters cost more upfront, but their 50- to 100-year lifespan and resistance to corrosion make them a practical long-term choice. They also develop a signature green patina that many homeowners like. If you plan to stay in your home for decades and prefer a low-maintenance system that handles harsh weather, the higher initial price can pay off over time.

With routine inspections and cleaning, copper gutters last 50 to 100 years. Over time, they change from bright copper to a muted brown and, eventually, a green patina that protects the metal from corrosion. Because the material resists rust and damage, you won’t need to replace the system as often as vinyl or aluminum, which last 20 to 30 years.

Exposure to air and moisture slowly oxidizes copper, transforming it from a shiny penny color to brown, then charcoal, and finally to the familiar green patina. In many climates, the full change takes approximately 20 years, although hot, humid, or coastal areas may experience color shifts sooner. The patina actually protects the metal, so you don’t need to polish or seal it unless you prefer to keep the bright copper look.

Gutters don’t have to match the roof or siding exactly, but they should complement the colors already on your home. Copper makes that easy—its color warms over time and pairs well with brick, stone, and most paint palettes. If you’re unsure which finish works best, ask a local designer or gutter professional to show you samples against your trim before ordering the materials.

The best material to use depends on your specific needs. Vinyl is the most affordable option and works well in mild climates, but it can crack in extremely cold conditions. Aluminum is an affordable and lightweight material that lasts approximately 25 years with routine maintenance. Steel handles heavy snow but will eventually rust. Copper costs the most, yet it can last a century with very little maintenance. Weigh life span, weather, and budget before making a choice.
