"Contractor Recommendation: Norfolk County Heating & Cooling Our 1895 refurbished Victorian's 3rd-floor mini split unit needed repair. Leaking lines were replaced. A chemical reaction between the copper line and wrapped insulation caused pinhole leaks in the line set. Manufacturers recalled that the warranty had expired and the unit was cooling poorly. Four contractors were contacted for estimates. Owner Patrick and project supervisor Renato excelled. They quickly listened and explained the problem, process challenges, and possible solutions. The price given was accurate and a fraction of the others I received. That worried me until it became clear the other contractors had quoted outrageous pricesâ either their company was understaffed and didn't want the small project or thought the customer was ignorant. The other contractors pressured us to upgrade from line replacement to system overhaul. One refused to provide an itemized breakdown of the FIVE times Norfolk H&C estimate but continued contacting me to finalize the sale without changing the price or explanation. Renato visited the day before the appointment to take additional photographs and check his materials. On replacement/installation day, Renato and his assistant were punctual and polite, knocked and asked permission before entering the property, and were great to our small dog. "Young man who came to do the job told us that they sent him to 3 wrong houses before they found ours. He proceeded to unclog the drain in the basement using the mechanical drain. Took him maybe an hour to clear it and also ran our sinks and toilets to make sure we wouldn?t have another problem. The young man left our house, however proceeded to sit in his running van, parked in my parking spot. I had no issues with this service until I saw the bill. $1000 to snake a drain for an hour? When we inquired about the bill they told us that their rate is 300$ an hour and that the job took 3 hours. In my opinion, if it takes you 3 hours to snake a drain, then someone should be fired or retrained at their job. My assumption is that their scheme involved sending this young man to multiple wrong houses and him sitting in my driveway for a prolong period of time, so that they could charge us for 3 hours of ?work.? "

"My central AC unit has been broken for several years. intermittently working during hot summers. I've had several HVAC companies come to diagnose and all of them told me different things: replace the whole system, new lines, etc. potentially costing tens of thousands of dollars. So I decided to troubleshoot by myself and pinpointed the issue: the filter dryer needed to be replaced. No company wanted to do this small job. I called Emerald HVAC and told them about my issue, they sent in José, who diagnosed the issue to be what I said. He replaced the filter dryer and the AC unit works perfectly now after several years! "they initially quoted $89 for AC diagnostics which is reasonable even though most companies charge nothing. Technician is very friendly and knowledgeable and walked me through the process. he checked the compressor outside and he suspected a leak. and then wanted to check the coil inside the blower. he detected a small leak with the electronic device. he mentioned coil may need replacement. After spending 10 mins in his truck to call the company he came back and said coil is not covered with warranty and quoted $5,400 to replace the coil and it is backordered for 6 weeks. 6 week will brings us to mid August so i told him i dont want to sign up for repair and wait 6 weeks. he then tried to sell me a maintenance plan which i declined. Then he said he will charge for the diagnostics which he spent total 30 mins including talking on the phone for warranty coverage. he said he did more than basic diagnostics which is $149. when he handed me the payment he added up initial $89 and $149 to pay $238 for 30 mins diagnostics. Total scam. i dont even know if they do any real work beyond the charging $238 for 30 mins diagnostics. probably they will hire a separate contractor to do the job and keep selling overpriced diagnostics and maintenance plans. They all you 10 times to sell you the initial diagnostics but after you pay $238 not even a single call to ask about experience. worst ever."
