"In the spring of 2018, our community received substantial storm and hail damage. This storm resulted in the majority of local homeowners in need of new roofs and siding. Our insurance company was prompt to assess the damage, and provide adequate funds to repair the damage of our home. The assessment concluded that need for the installation of a new roof (on our home and shed), new siding, new gutters, new garage door panels as well as funds to repaint our shed and repair our air conditioner. We then needed to choose a contractor to do the work. Our neighborhood was inundated with contractors. We decided to go with a local contractor because we like to support local business. We called a few local companies, but most of them were booked out a month in advance. We met with James Garcia, the owner of Roofing, Siding and Remodeling LLC. James presented well. He looked at the claim from Allstate; stated that he had worked with Allstate in the past, and assured us that he would be able to complete the repairs. He offered to put siding on the shed at no additional cost, rather than paint it. The contract was signed and the down payment was given to James in June of 2018. We were told that the work would start on June 17. When that date was pushed back about a month we responded with flexibility. When James, had a conflict with the brand of siding he planned to use we were flexible, and went with his 2nd choice. When it took longer than the three days promised to finish the job, we were flexible; though the work was not completed until the end of August. I was surprised when I received an email from James asking if we received the final pay out from Allstate, as he had never provided us with a final invoice. I contacted Allstate; turns out that James had submitted the final invoice directly to Allstate without sharing with us. Allstate asked if the work was complete. I told them that it was with the exception of a few details of the shed and the garage door, and our warranty paperwork. Allstate provided the payout. James had stated that they needed the payout because other insurance companies were slow at paying out; that their small business struggled to wait for payment. We wanted to meet to discuss the warranty, completion of the shed and the adjustment of the garage door. On August 30, 2018, we met with James; we discussed our concerns about the warranty paperwork, the completion of the shed and the garage door. James assured us that he would submit the warranty paperwork to GAF. He also explained that he didn't budget for the trim on the shed, but that he would return to finish the trim of the shed with aluminum wrap. He told us that his "garage door guy Chuck" was out of the country on a missions trip. James assured us that when Chuck returned to the country, he would have him stop by to adjust the garage door. Although the shed was not finished and the garage door needed adjustment, we paid proceeded to provide James the final payout that we received from Allstate. Since we did not receive a final invoice from James, we initially wrote the check for the amount based off his original invoice and the cost for a garage door opener (which as an added expense). When James brought it to our attention that the check should be for larger amount, I took a second look at the claim from Allstate, and re-wrote the check for the entire amount of dollars that Allstate provided. I have since reached out to James in emails, and phone calls. It wasn't until I sent him a text message in December that he finally responded. Stating "the warranty is filed, I have no control over the paperwork, but the warranty is in the system", that he left us paint for the shed (he never left us any paint) and that he is still waiting on the final payout for the garage door (work never completed and we never saw a final invoice). I have made contact with GAF, and they have informed me that the warranty was never filed and that there is no Weather Stopper Lifetime Warranty in their system for our home. This warranty was promised to use as well as publicized on the Facebook page of Roofing Siding Remodeling. GAF has been very helpful and has requested that we send them all paperwork involved with this transaction and are doing all that they can to ensure our satisfaction. At this point, we have decided that we will hire someone else to finish the work on both the garage door and the shed. We are hoping that GAF will provide us with the warranty, as the work was done and the warranty was promised by James Garcia, owner of Roofing Siding and Remodeling LLC; one of their certified contractors."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Wisconsin Dells, WI

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
