A couple of things were noteworthy.
We presumed that an ejector pump was broken and would need replacement, but Big Wrench first explored the possibility that it wasn't working because of an electrical problem. It's always nice when a contractor doesn't immediately default to the full replacement/high cost option. The pump did need replacing as we suspected. The charge was considerably lower than other prices we were quoted.
We wanted two toilets and one faucet fixture checked, and got a price quote for all of that plus the pump. After that price quote, Big Wrench added a check of a third toilet and three more faucet fixtures for no extra charge.
All done quickly and professionally.

"When temperatures dropped to -50 with wind chill, the pipes to our basement bathroom sink froze. And as soon as everything began to thaw, (on Friday night) we found that we had a ruptured hot water pipe. Water was shooting out of the wall all over the bathroom. When it became clear that our usual plumber wasn't going to show up on Saturday, I frantically called half-a-dozen plumbers from Angie's List. Only Charlie got back to me and agreed to show up after his next job. On a day that he was clearly being overwhelmed with calls from all over the city, Charlie kept his word and showed up with his partner Dimitri. They quickly figured out there were no other leaks and repaired the pipe. On top of it, Charlie spotted two other unrelated plumbing issues in our HVAC room. They were minor now but could have turned into bigger problems down the road. His thoroughness and attention to detail allowed him to spot these hidden problems and save us headaches down the road. We had our water working in under an hour (on a Saturday evening!) and he charged a very fair price given the demands upon his time. He left our house at 5pm, his phone blowing up from other customers. I asked if he was going to have an end to the day soon, but he said he still had hours to go...he had promised other worried homeowners that he would help them today. "Whenever there was a heavy rain, flood water would come through the cracks in the "cove" where the basement wall meets the floor near the basement door leading to the exterior stair walkout. Lincoln correctly diagnosed the problem as a broken p-trap. Douglas came with one other person on time, efficiently broke through the cement landing and put in a new clay piece with a 2 foot extension. He showed me the old clay rain drain that they had removed, and it was collapsed and completely plugged up rocky clay, so it was no longer draining out to the catch basin. The house is 100 years old, and the pipe was no doubt original. They smoothly re-laid the cement at a pitch so that the water flowed toward the drain, and cleaned up afterward. No muss, no fuss; they were done in no time. They even rodded out to the street at no extra charge. The problem was fixed, and there has been no more basement flooding near the basement door! Yeah!
Lincoln had been recommended to me by a neighbor. I got quotes from three sewer contractors, and Lincoln's was actually the lowest. One of the companies I spoke to was not even interested in investigating the rain drain, but only wanted to sell me an interior drain system with a sump pump for $6,000. Problem was that the interior drains are no longer allowed in Oak Park. Well, we are happy that we got the problem fixed by honest, competent people. It was a pleasure doing business with them and I would recommend their sewer service in a heartbeat.

"I can no longer recommend John.  
He helped us in 2009 when we bought a condo from the first owner.  He fixed some leaking facets and installed some water filtration units.  We were very satisfied with his work and promptness at the time.  We felt the yelp 5 stars he had at the time were justified.
The trouble started when it was time for him to come and replenish the filtration compound on one of the units he had installed.  We spent a couple of weeks trying to fix an appointment.  He simply forgot about one of the appointments and rescheduled us twice (once for a family emergency.)  When we finally got him to come, he apologize and said that he was not going to charge us for the refill and that he would be back soon with our canister.  He left a temporary replacement.  John also noticed that our kitchen sink was falling down because the developer had not mounted it to the granite without enough supports and offered to re-install it correctly for a reasonable cost.  We accepted the offer, so when we returned with the filter canister, we had him to the re-install (which took several phone calls and text to arrange.  
John failed to mention that he was going to use PVC pipe to prop up the sagging sink instead fixing it to the granite with more metal supports.  John did a bad job of putting in the silicone barrier between the granite and sink, so water splashes started to leak into the cabinet below the sink.  The worst part of this is that the biggest silicone hole was directly on top of the PVC at the front of the cabinet, so the water was leaking down the middle of the pipe invisibly and causing damage to the wood bottom.  When I contact John about this issue, he said in a text back that he would have to see it for himself and that is the last correspondence we have had from.  Tired of wasting our time trying to get his attention and fix appointments we spent this morning removing all of his moldy, dirty, half complete silicone and are redoing the job correctly ourselves.  
My personal opinion is that he is too busy and can't manage his thriving business (he has more than one work crew) while doing the work himself.  He tries to rely on text messages, but often forgets to update his schedule or contact book, so asks for the same message again and again... and still manages to miss appointments.
