"Josef does excellent work - I would hire him again. He replaced a 15 foot railing in front of my home. He took extra care to match the color of the stain (including sending me pics from the hardware store to confirm). Scheduling took a more back and forth than expected but it was worth the wait."

"I really could not have asked for better administrative and management service. The actual work and the carpenter himself was equally as great. The carpenter was creative in delivering a great product. I would like to assume that some carpenter would have charged a bit less, but it would not have been worth the savings to either get inferior service, a headache, or a questionable product."

"Trying to execute a major outdoor renovation project during a time of global supply chain disruptions poses many challenges. Happy to report that Mal and PHI navigated that rocky path very well. Mal kept us informed of the many changes coming from the supplier as far as colors and delivery. It was a long process...8 months between signing the contract and having the work completed. In the end we are very happy with the product and the quality of the work. A major windstorm hit the area the day after the work was completed and put the installation to the test. Everything held up perfectly...no loose bits flapping on the house or flying around the yard. In researching this project ahead of time, we had spoken with many friends who've had their siding replaced and none of them were especially happy with their contractor. We had the best experience with Mal and PHI. Highly recommended."

"Communication was stellar. Rob arrived exactly when he said he would to give me an estimate, and within 1-2 days I had a full blow proposal in my email. The rest of the communication from there on was just as good up until completion of the job. I have to say this is a huge relief, we've all worked with contractors who were hard to get a hold of, didn't communicate, and left you chasing after them. In the beginning of the job, I asked Rob if he would be hanging the sheets vertically or horizontally. He said horizontal, because the panels would be more rigid and less prone to seams cracking as the house moves. Since my ceiling is less than 8ft tall, hanging vertical would have been easier and faster at every phase, but he strongly discouraged me from that option because it is simply not as good. That is a contractor with integrity right there. As for the work itself, just as good. Rob and crew arrive on day 1 to hump 60 sheets of drywall into a narrow corridor with an awkward turn at the bottom of the basement, 1 sheet at a time in minus 8 degree weather. They were super careful to ensure they didn't damage walls or floors of the finished living space. Then the real work started. They had all of the drywall hung in 2 days, both gluing and screwing each panel to the studs (using OSI professional construction adhesive...the best and most expensive stuff). From there, 4 additional days to PROPERLY tape, mud and finish. They use a mix of hand techniques and machine assisted finishing tools. Perfect cutouts for outlets and can lights. Sharp, clean inside and outside corners. Butt seams (the most difficult to blend) feathered 2+ feet to make them disappear. I literally walked around my basement with a flashlight on the seams to look for imperfections, and I saw none. Flawless finish job. WOW, I can't wait to paint, finish and make use of the new space."

"We are amazed at the outcome of this project!  We had several quotes for finishing our lower level and Paul's quote and vision for the job best aligned with ours.  We appreciated the way that Paul itemized the quote, which we didn't receive from any of the other quotes.  The quality of the work looks like it would have cost double of what was quoted.
Paul and his crew were wonderful and very easy to work with from day one.  They showed up on time and usually stayed late.  They cleaned up at the end of each day.  Paul and his crew were polite and seemed to enjoy the work they were doing.  You can tell that they have a passion and pride in what they do.
The job took one week to complete.  Within that time, they were also able to install laminate flooring and paint a walk-in closet and stain and install a shelf that we added at the start of the project.  They took on this extra request without hesitation and made it seamless.  We requested a custom built-in bookcase and Paul took on this work himself including the design.  The outcome far exceeded our expectations.
We are looking forward to working with Paul and his crew on future projects."

FAQs for arbor, pergola or trellis custom build projects in Zion, IL

Pergolas and gazebos are both outdoor structures, but there are differences between the two. A pergola has a slatted roof that allows partial sunlight to filter through, creating a light and airy space. In contrast, a gazebo features a solid roof that provides complete shade. This key difference influences the comfort and visual appeal of your outdoor space.

Prefabricated pergola kits require one to four hours of assembly, while custom pergola designs take an average of eight to 16 hours. Additional groundwork, such as pouring a concrete slab, leveling the site, and removing obstructions, may extend the installation process to several weeks, ensuring a secure and long-lasting build.

A standard pergola kit ships with everything you need—four support posts, rafters, top runners, support beams, and hardware for anchoring the frame to a concrete pad. Many manufacturers also bundle add-ons like retractable canopies, privacy screens, or modular sections that let you tweak the footprint. Because each part is pre-cut and labeled, the kit helps you—or your contractor—assemble a sturdy, attractive structure without extra trips to the hardware store.
