"Jim was very prompt and seemed responsive. He is a nice guy who works hard.  He started the work when he said he would and kept it on schedule in spite of some difficult weather.   His brother worked with him the first few days, but after that he did all of the work himself.
Unfortunately, the work does not look as professional as I had hoped.  Some of the wood is not cut straight, edges are not smooth, and there are many gaps between boards.
As the work got toward completion I told him of my concern that the workmanship was not good.  Jim said he would get it all fixed up at the end.  He filled some gaps with wood filler and sanded them, but did not finish due to rain.  The filled and sanded joints still look sloppy.  Unfortunately, these joints are right in front of the kitchen window, where we see them all the time.
Jim said he has a lifetime guarantee on his work and will come back to finish this up.  I hope he will.
Another builder told me that the structural work on the deck is very good, even "overbuilt," which I was glad to hear.

Update: Jim came back and relaid some of the boards on the deck and it looks much better! I would definitely hire him again.

Update:  The second summer after Jim built the deck I stained it myself, so I got a close look at the workmanship. Many boards were split by nailing, decking is not spaced uniformly, and  joints are not well fitted. "

"They are excellent! They were here on time, went right to work and made sure everything was working properly before they left. They also made sure that every piece of lint or fuzz was cleaned up and left spotless."

"We've had Patrick at our home for several different projects. The first time he removed an old ceiling fan and installed a new fan in the bathroom. It went so well, that we had him move a ceiling fan from one room to another, then install a new ceiling fan in the dining room. We have an older home and he had to do more work than expected to install one of the fans. Even though it cost him more time than estimated, he stuck with his original price. A few months later he worked on an exterior door that we were having trouble closing and locking. Patrick replaced the hinges and squared up the opening. We were also going to replace the door knob but after he realigned the door, he found that there was no reason to. The last project we had him do was a small repair on the metal roof that came loose on one edge of the house. It's a 2 story house so for safety reasons we rented a lift and he had the repair done in a few hours. I will definitely hire Patrick again. His prices are more than fair, he sticks by his word and he's able to do most any repair that is needed. He shows up on time and works fast and efficiently. Thanks Patrick Mark Morris"

"Great job - Steve came out and quoted when he said he would, the price was fair, and the work was done very quickly, within 2 weeks. His workers were skilled, showed up every day on time, were courteous, and they all did a great job. I would definitely recommend Steve for any remodeling and repair work!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Jacksonville, FL

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
