"Rather then giving me a 6400 quote with a 1000 toilet option, I should have been offered a pipeline camera inspection to identify options such as linging my sewer line, or partial replacement. I got a high end guess has to how deep and how long my sewer line actually is. No fault to the â technicianâ he did what he was trained to do, sell me a job. He was professional and polite."

"Five plumbing companies provided quotes to replace the main sewer line and install an in-ground clean out at my house. Mr. Rooter's quote was not the least expensive but it was the most reasonable and professional. Every person I dealt with was consultative, courteous and good at what they do. The work started on time and finished in about 4 hours. The only surprise was a good one: the technician discovered a second clean-out needed to be installed at the street end and did that at no additional cost, a good job done right. Everything cleaned-up neatIy afterward including the street. I watched the excavator operator do his thing and was impressed to see surgical precision achieved with heavy equipment and a joystick - from digging the trench in a narrow section next to the house, to filling it back in and then grading it perfectly (it rained heavily about an hour after work finished and all the runoff flowed exactly where it's supposed to go). One week, 14 long showers, 10 giant loads of laundry and countless toilet flushes later, the outflow is working better than it ever did before. Happy to recommend Mr. Rooter Plumbing without hesitation."

"I have used Worley for a variety of projects with excellent results, but I particularly want to shine a light on the most recent toilet installation. Many years ago, another plumbing company told us that there was a problem pipe in a walls that clogged when we used the two fixtures upstairs for #2. To fix them would have cost us as much as $15000 between the actual repair and putting in new drywall and wallpaper. So, we had a couple of guys come to check out the problem, and they thought the problem was that the two upstairs toilets didn't have enough pressure, and there were modern ones using the same amount of water per flush but had much stronger flushes. Combined, they cost less than $1500. So, they installed them last week and they are working wonderfully! So, Worley's probably save as $13,000 or more. That would be reason enough to hire these guys."

"The crew arrived on time to begin removing old HVAC system and install a brand new one.  They were precise, neat, hard working and efficient.  Work had to be done inside, outside and in the hall and attic.  New vents were installed as the current was insufficient.  They forgot to bring filters for the new system, but said they would be delivered the next day.  The system was up and running like a champ by that afternoon.  a state of the art control panel was installed and explained to us fully.  They provided all the information we needed to begin using our new system.  They cleaned everything up and hauled away the old system.  Before they left for the day they went under the house to check our duct system.  That was when they blew it.  The HVAC installation team decided to make a judgement call on our duct work in the crawl space.  Bad move.  They informed us that we needed all new duct work installed and proceeded to explain why our current duct work was worthless.  What they didn't know was we had just had state of the art duct work repair and a new patented form of insulation wrapped around all the pipes that cut moisture and sweat build up down to levels to can not be accomplished with standard insulation. They also returned to their company office and reported negative feed back on our duct leading Russell's to believe we needed new duct work.  A representative was scheduled to come out and give us an estimate on duct work replacement.  As it turned out it was time for "Clean Air Solutions" (the company who actually handled the work on the duct system) to come out and do a follow up check and take moisture readings.  Both representatives were present at the same time.  Both went under the house and "Clean Air Solutions "had the opportunity to show Russell's what was done.  Russell's was impressed and then saw that the technician that they sent out to install our HVAC had error ed in his judgement and review. I would advise customers to tread carefully when receiving reports from individuals that may not be properly experienced in areas of their home.  Russell's Heating and Air did a great job installing our new HVAC

"We had a really bad clog in our main line and Ray, the contractor who came out to help us was very professional and did his best to see to it that our problem was fixed and we would have no future issues. His co-worker was just as professional and friendly and helped us understand all that was being done. We feel we got a more than fair price for all that had to be done. We highly recommend Abiding Alterations for any plumbing needs."

FAQs for sewer main install, replace or repair projects in Portsmouth, VA

When installing a sewer line, you should consider extra costs like tree removal, driveway repairs, or patio resurfacing. Hiring a professional plumber is essential, and you may need additional specialists if landscaping or heavy excavation is involved. Addressing these potential extras up front helps ensure accurate budgeting and prevents sudden cost overruns.

To calculate the length of sewer piping you need, measure the distance from your house to the main sewer line, adding the depth of the city main to this distance. Be sure to account for any obstacles like tree roots or utility lines that may require additional piping.

City sewer lines are installed at a lower elevation to prevent unwanted backflow and water damage. This lower positioning ensures enhanced performance and long-term safety, meeting all technical and safety standards.

With trenchless methods, a plumber inserts a smaller pipe within the existing plumbing, avoiding full excavation. It can be more cost-effective and less disruptive than traditional methods, but it's not suitable for all homes.

Yes, you must secure permission from your local water authority before connecting to a public sewer line. This approval ensures your connection meets all regulatory requirements.

Sewer lines are buried between 18 inches and 8 feet deep, with most systems placed between 18 and 30 inches. In colder regions, pipes are set deeper to remain below the frost line.
