"After submitting the request to Angi we were contacted by LeBrun Electric to do the work and an initial consultation was scheduled with their electrician. Before that first meeting we called the company and specifically told them that we had problems with previous electricians who did work in our home on a whole home solar system. We also communicated that we would be entering into a lawsuit with them. These facts were also communicated to the electrician, and everything related to previous installations/work was to remain on property due to the pending lawsuit. That was made clear. We communicated this to the electrician several times. There were also comments from the electrician indicating that he knew the past electricians in the house – comments regarding Pat’s health. After completion of the work we found that the meter socket, the breaker, and the breakers were removed from the premises. We were told afterwards that they remove all old material, but it's interesting that the electricians pick and choose what items stayed and what items were taken. All other boxes that were removed from walls, inside and outside, were left behind, but the meter socket and the breaker box containing a lot of very expensive, relatively new breakers were removed. We specifically requested that the meter socket remain on the property because it would play a big role in the lawsuit - it was not code. That meter socket was something that we paid for and was installed in 2020. the breakers in the box were all new and there were at least 3 50-Amp breakers, 7 20-Amp 1 pole Tandem breakers, 1 20-Amp Dual Function breaker, and 9 15-Amp 1 pole Tandem breakers. Less than half of those were returned. The breakers should not have been removed from the house. Now for the safety issues: The state in which the electrical work was left would have guaranteed a failure by the inspector. It was as if the work was deliberately set up to fail. On the Automatic Transfer Switch, the front panel could not be removed because it was jammed into place by the inner panel. This was because the wire in the box was shoved in, too long, not orderly, and therefore pushed out on the 2 panels so they were jammed and could not be removed without a lot of effort. Once the covers were removed, we found that the wires were not secure. The slightest movement caused the cables from the meter to slip loose of the terminals in the ATS. The wires to the multitap connectors were loose as well and many of the strands were bent so the connection was not complete. As I watched the inspector during his inspection, he first checked the breaker box, then followed the lines to the ATS and opened it up. If we hadn’t found the issues first there is no way the inspection would have passed. Also, the electricians put 2 side taps in place on the cables to the meter. Neither of the side taps were tightened and didn’t even connect to the copper of the meter cables. When we turned our solar equipment on to connect to the grid it did not recognize a connection to the grid. This was also something we asked the electrician to do but wasn’t completed. Next is the service disconnect box that we asked the electrician to connect. This is another area where the work done was left unsafe. It was known that we would be opening the box to connect the wires of the system to the service wires once we received the connectors. The wires that were connected by the electrician were loose and slipped from the terminals. Pat was hit by 220 when one of those wires slipped loose. We’re very lucky that he wasn’t injured more seriously. Also, the electricians decided to run the wiring through the bottom of the service disconnect instead of through the top – the cover they placed on the top of the box to seal it did not cover the opening – I can’t believe this would meet code and the service disconnect box needed to be replaced. It was known that we needed the white, red and black 1/0 wire that came into the house to the ‘service disconnect’ to change out/rewire the generator input wire. There was over 45 feet of 1/0 wire that was removed from the house, that was needed for another purpose. The wires should not have been removed from the house and the electrician knew why. Taken from house: Meter socket 45 ft of 1/0 wire (red, black, & white) 7 20-Amp 1 pole Siemens Tandem breakers 9 15-Amp 1 pole Siemens Tandem breakers 1 20-Amp Dual Function breaker 3 50-Amp Siemens breakers New signs were not provided Shoddy labor that would have failed inspection if we had not intervened"

FAQs for electrical switches, outlets & fixtures install or repair projects in Annandale, MN

Warning signs include outlets that no longer grip plugs securely, visible damage to the faceplate, unusual warmth, or discoloration around the outlet. If you notice sparking when plugging in devices, breakers that trip when the outlet is used, or detect burning smells, these indicate potentially serious problems requiring immediate professional attention.

A straightforward outlet replacement takes a qualified electrician about 30 minutes or less. However, if the outlet has significant damage or the electrician needs to diagnose underlying electrical issues, the repair might extend to a couple of hours. The timeline depends on the complexity of the problem, accessibility of the outlet, and whether additional electrical work is needed.

While simple outlet replacement is technically possible for homeowners with basic electrical knowledge, safety concerns make professional installation advisable. If attempting DIY repairs, you must properly shut off power at the breaker box and verify the circuit is dead using a voltage tester. Complex issues involving circuit problems or specialized outlets should always be handled by licensed professionals to ensure safety and code compliance.

There's no set replacement schedule for electrical outlets in good condition. Instead, replace outlets when you notice signs of damage, loose connections, or functionality problems. Outlets in older homes may need updating to meet current safety codes, especially if they lack proper grounding or are located in areas now requiring GFCI protection, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets contain specialized safety technology that monitors electrical current and quickly cuts power when imbalances are detected. These complex internal components make them more expensive than standard outlets. Additionally, they must be installed in specific locations to meet electrical code requirements, often requiring specialized installation techniques that increase labor costs.

Request verification of proper licensing and insurance coverage. Ask about their experience with similar repairs and their process for diagnosing electrical problems. Request a written estimate detailing parts, labor, and any potential additional costs. Inquire about warranties on their work and the expected completion timeframe. Also, ask if they'll inspect the circuit associated with the problematic outlet to identify any related issues.
