"Steve and his team did an amazing job on our two bathrooms. One was completely gutted and we got a new, level floor; bigger shower; custom made cabinetry and all new plumbing...all in a small space. The other got a new floor, new custom cabinetry and new plumbing and countertop. Steve has high standards which stretched our budget to the max but in the end it was all worth it. He is excellent at communicating and getting back to us quickly when we had concerns or questions. If any little thing was not done right, he would send someone back to fix it (even one year later with a small crack that developed in some caulking.) 1.5 years later we are still thrilled with our bathrooms. We didn't know exactly what we wanted but he helped us think through design possibilities as well. Thank you, Steve and team! p.s. it took a little longer than we expected and there were bumps in the road but isn't that the way it always happens with remodeling? Bottom line....we are so happy with the results."

"Since we built our house in 2000, Kendall Woodworking has done many jobs for us. From the custom kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and custom built-in's during the building of the house, to the basement with custom cabinets, wet bar, and a home office that we finished a few years later, Joel and his team have done great work, in a timely manner, and at fair prices. When we decided to refresh our kitchen with a remodel, it was a no-brainer to call Kendall Woodworking! As usual Joel listened to what we wanted to do, made great suggestions, and worked hard to get us the best prices available. He would promptly reply to my voicemails and text messages. His crew were professional and were in and out quickly. We were pleased with his work when we built, when our basement was finished, and just as pleased with the work on our recent kitchen remodel. We have future plans for additional areas to "refresh" and Kendall Woodworking will be our first call!"

"Great, we have no complaints... we would definitely recommend the company to our family and friends. When telling people we were getting our basement waterproofed and people were asking who was doing the basement... we heard nothing but good things about Complete Basement Systems!"

"Approached the entire project very professionally and did thorough job with the work. Available via e-mail or cell as needed, and also they set a schedule using web-based project management tool that automatically alerted you to updates on the project. They would also call to update in addition to relying on the project management portal. Weather prohibited project completion, but they worked late into the season to get main part of it done and will finish the work in the spring (ground work and cement below the deck, and painting). Will be having them quote additional remodeling jobs on the inside of the house."

"I researched basement waterproofing solutions and was considering doing it myself. Then I found Safe Basements and read the literature about their product/process. To me, it seemed better than other similar products. I was surprised that they cover my place -- 2 hours into Wisconsin, or 3 hours from Litchfield. Brad came out to inspect the problems in my basement -- horizontal cracking, bowing, and water intrusion. He was able to explain the causes of those problems as well as others that I hadn't noticed. We agreed to pay for anchors to stabilize one wall that was bowing, and install drain tile and a sump pump. I'll be honest, I didn't shop around. I have no idea what other companies are charging for the same services. I normally get 3 or 4 bids or other opinions. I felt comfortable with the amount of research that I'd done, the knowledge Brad seemed to have, and the information about the products that I decided to hire Safe Basements without talking to other companies. I don't regret that decision. The wall anchor/stabilization crew called me before leaving Litchfield. Their ETA was pretty close to the actual time of arrival. When they arrived, we discussed the work being done. They did the work. They cleaned up. They gave me information about the anchor system and what I needed to do to correct the bowing and cracks. Everything was done as expected. The drain tile/sump crew was stuck at a previous job. They called me the day before (Tuesday) my job was expected to start to let me know there would be a delay starting my job. He then called in the middle of the start day (Wednesday) to let me know, they wouldn't be to my house until the next day. I was expecting a call between 7 and 8 on Thursday to let me know they were leaving Litchfield. Instead, I got a call at about 7:15 to let me know they were 15 minutes from my house. When they arrived, we talked about the work to be done, they cocooned my stuff in plastic, and they went to work. I think they worked until about 7 that day. They returned on Friday at about 8:30, having stopped to dump my concrete and dirt and to pick up gravel and concrete. They worked until about 10:30pm on Friday. I appreciated that they finished on Friday even though it was later than I expected. They cleaned up everything thoroughly, and walked me through the details of the sump pump and battery backup systems. Even though they'd driven a long distance, worked two very long days, and it was very late Friday, I didn't feel they rushed through. The job was complete. I think they would have stayed later if I'd had anymore questions. Unfortunately, one of the workers left his very nice tape measure, and I have not been able to get it back to him."

"Sue was prompt in answering my request for help and we soon worked out a meeting. She has a good program to get you started in the initial consultation and you can take it from there on your own or continue on working with her for help. In the few hours of my first meeting she showed great ideas that saved me thousands of $$ literally in the first meeting by doing one thing versus a total remodel. From there we met for furniture and accessory shopping and then a meeting for her to come back and put things together. Have had many compliments on her work at our home and I am very happy with the results! Thank you Sue!"

"Jon was conscientious, he ensures all work performed is up to top standards, his craftsmanship was outstanding, and he performed things that were not specified in the original project. I originally only wanted the shower to be reconstructed, but he pointed out how the flooring was questionable also under the tile floor, which I confirmed, and happily agreed to have the floor also replace. It is rare today to find someone who has upmost pride in his work, and ensures the customer is happy with the work performed, and the work was reasonably priced. If you are looking for tile work, or a bathroom remodel, I would highly recommend Jon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"After working with another remodeler to build a new kitchen for a couple of months and becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of professionalism, I contacted Vail Builders after seeing them highly recommended on Angie’s List. Jim Vail promptly returned my phone call and set up an appointment to measure the room and to meet with my wife and I regarding our ideas. In just a couple of weeks, Jim had created a set of preliminary plans and the most comprehensive contract I’ve ever seen. Jim is thorough and extremely detail oriented, which is exactly what you need in a general contractor. Jim has high expectations of his subcontractors and is responsive and fair to his clients. I will plan to hire Vail Builders for any and all of my future building needs"

"splendidly! Kent arrived as scheduled for a measure of the rooms/ areas to have replacement flooring installed. At that time he inquired and listened to what I wanted out of new flooring: a wood-look that would blend with existing woodwork, easy care. He recommended a laminate flooring that I fell in love with and immediately ordered. Kent and his crew arrived each day as scheduled and performed the work with minimal disruption to our daily routines. Each day the work site was cleaned and we were given updates of what was to be done the next day. Kent has a great work ethic and does quality work which is why we have scheduled him to remodel two bathrooms this summer."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Arlington, MN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
