"After 20 years, our home's original front porch had served us well, but the wood decking, railing and trim all needed to be replaced. We decided to rebuild it using composite materials everywhere, so it will last even longer than the original and will be as close to maintenance free as possible. We picked out exactly the materials and colors we wanted for our new porch and then started looking for a contractor. Based on recommendations, online research and Angie's List, we requested quotations from three contractors. All three responded and we had a chance to discuss the project with each of them. J & L Contractors stood out among them, with the best references, most experience and they were ready to do the project promptly. Working with J & L was a pleasure. "I ran a large contracting business for many years so can be a bit picky and demanding. This project was quite challenging, but was done by HWP efficiently, cost-effectively, and in a very high quality manner. We worked primarily with Zana, who does most of the administrative work. Her husband, Francisco, sets up the work and heads up the crews. He was not always at our project, since I assume they may often have more than one going at a time, but that was never a problem. He was there whenever needed or requested. Our home is not small, was built in 1843, and although much has been replaced over the years, nothing is plumb or square. The window trim, some sills, and parts of the jambs were rotten, as were many of the corner boards of the house itself. We needed to remove the old wood and replace it with new. Zana and Francisco visited the home, reviewed the work, and gave us two proposals. One was an hourly rate for the carpentry work and the other was a fixed price for the painting of the entire house and trim. Both prices were very fair. They could not give us a fixed price on the carpentry work because we could not see what hidden work might be required or what we might discover. They did give us a "guesstimate" on how long the work might take, from which I could calculate a budget, and it turned out to be reasonably accurate. Much of the work required removal of rotten wood and trimming and shaping of the adjoining pieces. They made sure any gaps were filled and caulked. They also did a great job identifying areas we had not noticed and giving us options to replace entire areas, or just portions. For painting, everything was pressure-washed before the work began; many of our downspouts were removed to allow access to tight spots; and new wood received a primer and two coats. HWP worked around our schedule, which got pushed back a bit early on, and always showed up when they said they would. We had a crew that varied from two people to four. HWP is not a big company, but they are attentive and meticulous. I would definitely use them again!"

I have been working very closely with the staff at New England Outdoor Sheds & Gazebos, mostly through e-mail correspondence but also via telephone for the delivery and installation of a 10 x 10 cedar pergola.  They have been very helpful at helping me choose the right design and materials.  They are quick to answer telephone calls and return e-mails.    After intensive research, I believe that they offer the best product.  The materials are manufactured by the Amish in Pennsylvania using the highest grade cedar and stainless steel hardware.  New England Outdoor Sheds & Gazebos also provides free delivery and installation.  However, be prepared to wait.   It seems that the Amish work on their own schedule and it may be weeks to months before the product is delivered.  I placed my order in early August and it is scheduled to be delivered in early October.
