"<p>The firm's president, Randy Alverson, arrived promptly, assessed our damp basement situation, and explained in great detail the various steps of the waterproofing process.  He answered all of my questions and was so professional and reassuring that I broke my usual rule of getting at least 3 proposals for any home project, and decided to hire Chamberlin-Washington immediately.  Of course, I had done my homework and read the firm's excellent reviews on numerous websites including Angle's List, which added to my confidence in my choice.  </p> <p>The Chamberlin-Washington crew was terrific and worked so hard under very chilly and damp conditions. They first removed all of the plants/shrubs from our front borders, carefully wrapping the roots in order to preserve them.   An 8 + -foot trench then had to be dug along the front of our house, to the bottom of the foundation, in order to begin the waterproofing process.  They worked very carefully, addressing one half of the foundation at a time (including under our front porch, which was undisturbed). The crew realized that our home's exterior foundation was very rough and uneven, which meant that it wouldn't be a receptive surface for the waterproofing membrane.  Mr. Alverson came back to our house to explain the additional steps that were needed to smooth the foundation out before the waterproof membrane could be applied: grind down the rough foundation, install stainless steel wall ties, install wood forms and pour a 4" thick concrete layer to even up and consolidate the foundation.  He made sure that we understood what was going to happen, and explained that though this was an unusual step to have to take, they had done it before for with some older homes such as ours (built circa 1925).  This extra step of preparation added an additional 50% to the original fee, but it had to be done. Once the waterproofing layer was finally in place, they tested it by spraying water onto the foundation for an hour, with one person carefully monitoring the process inside our basement to make sure that no water was leaking through.</p> <p>Ultimately, Chamberlin-Washington was able to thoroughly waterproof the front foundation of our home, and we have had no further water problems whatsoever.  We were extremely impressed with Mr. Alverson and his crew -- very professional, punctual and thorough.  I highly recommend this firm to anyone whose home needs similar waterproofing work.  I should also add that Chamberlin-Washington honored the 10% discount for Angie's List members -- a nice touch.</p> <br />"

"I had made a poor hiring decision with a different landscape contractor.  I needed some drainage issues fixed, lot regrading, and sod placed.  The first contractor did an awful job not only failing to fix the problems, but actually making them much worse which caused flooding and water damage to the basement we were in the middle of finishing.  It became an emergency situation in the midst of some really wet weather.  I did more research this time, and chose the Garrett Group.  Dave was very responsive and sympathetic to my situation.  He came out within 12 hours of my inquiry to survey the situation and make his recommendations.  He immediately made me feel comfortable that I was making the right decision.  Night and day from the first guy.  His estimate was not only reasonable, but almost half of the other two companies I contacted. He and his crew came out on time, got the work done quickly, and impressed me with their professionalism.  The drainage issues were much, much better but still not 100%.  I contacted Dave after the next rain and he was out again within hours.  He and his crew returned to do a little more work, and problem solved.  It has been such a relief to have the situation taken care of.  I would not hesitate to recommend the Garrett group and I will use them again in the future.  In fact, I am writing him this evening for a quote.  Couldn't be more pleased. <br />"

"Two of the faucets were repaired. The third one (kitchen) was not repaired properly. To be clear, when Randall (plumber) came, I was not at the house so someone else conveyed my complaints about the faucets. The work he did on the kitchen faucet did not address the issue that I was seeing. I called Zeh's and they promptly sent Randall back out. This time I was there. Randall provided options to me for replacing the faucet or fixing it. He offered information and answered my questions but was not trying to sell me on any particular course of action. Based on his information, I chose to replace the faucet (and gabage disposal since they were both old). He recommended products for me to buy. He came back within a day or so (on a Saturday) to install new faucet and garbage disposal and did not charge for the Saturday service. After a year, it's all still good."

"Sent request out day before Thanksgiving and Paul returned call same day explained a little what I needed done and just wanted estimate on everything. He said he could come by the next morning. So upon arrival he had the replacement garbage disposal with him and began to start working on removing the broken one. In this process he had his mask on and was very open about his past as a basketball player from DC area and spent 2hours of just his past. So 2hour job was four hours. Then he moved to securing the kitchen sink to the counter. Next we moved to the leaking faucets up stairs he had to go and get replacement parts from about 30mins away both ways returned and replaced each stem 3 for $75 each. They did not have the fourth so he told we where to check to get part along with how to install it. Total day work for 8hrs $700. Never discussed his hourly wages which was my fault because I should of stuck with the estimate first. All in all just watch how much you talk while he is working!"

"I made the mistake of pushing tons of apple peels down the kitchen disposal while making apple sauce. The pipe was totally clogged. I tried removing the P-trap myself but didn't succeed, and I incidentally damaged the P-trap in the process (but still could not remove it). The next day I called Speedy Rooter around 11am, and got an appointment for 3-5pm. On my way home I bought a <br /> replacement P-trap. The tech came around 3:30pm (I did call around 3pm and got an update on the arrival time). He cut the PVC pipes (turns out the pipes are glued so I am glad I didn't force it), put on the new P-trap, and installed two black-colored connectors (don't know how they are called). He said this way I will  have access to the P-trap myself should this happen again.  At the end I got a value price and they did honor the coupon I got from Angie's list. The tech was professional and curtious, and of course didn't laugh at my way of dealing with the apple peel and didn't give me a lecture, which was nice. <br />"

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Brownsburg, VA

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
