"Everything looks absolutely gorgeous! Finishing work had great attention to detail. Plumbing was corrected to make our chosen bathroom fixtures work for the space. Drywall, paint, ceilings, floors, new french door to outside, new siding and paint outside, new covered porch, all done with professional timing and attitude. They worked with us and gave helpful suggestions and even fit in extra projects along the way. Would definitely hire them again!"

"For the most part all went well. The original plan was to install all wall anchors, but they ran into rock around the majority of the foundation. Were very straight forward with notifying me about the problem, was presented with my options and felt as if I was not getting any kind of run-around or bull. The cost was adjusted downward (as the carbon fiber strips are less expensive to install), even though they had dug the holes for most of the anchors. Installation of the strip and the anchors seem to be very well done. <br /> After several rains, the holes for the anchors had sunk down quite a bit. I called the company and they sent someone out to top off the holes. Could have used a bit of grass seed as well, but I'll not knit pick that too much. <br /> The issue I did have was that when they installed the carbon fiber strips, they was an incredible amount of dust from grinding the slots in the walls. I have a large amount of "stuff" in my basement, including a tv, other electronics, excersize equipment, pots, plates, bookshelves, etc... all of which was covered with a healthy coating of dust. When I called to let them know, they told me they were not responsible for cleanup. This would be OK with me had they prevented a good potion of the dust from getting all over everything, but for what I paid for the work, I did not expect to spend days cleaning everything up. I wouldn't mind if we were talking about vaccuming a floor or something, but there was dust in every nook and cranny of an entire basement full of stuff. <br /> All in all, the work was done well and the price was fairly good compared to others I had received. If a bit more care would have been paid attention to the cleanup, or protection of my items, it would have been a very good experience. <br />"

"Freddy was very professional and knowledgeable and explained that the water issues were not the result of foundation issues and explained what he could do if i wanted a dry basement. He did not try to sell me something that i did not need."

"Jon is one of the most dependable contractors I have used since coming to Charlottesville 5 years ago. He removed an old deck off the back of my house and added on a new pressure treated deck. I always knew when he would be there and he was meticulous about his work. Because of how well that went, he was the only one I called when I needed a bathroom remodeled. He did the tile floor and installed a new vanity, light fixtures, etc. He definitely gets my recommendation!"

"<hr /> We live in a townhouse.  We discovered we had 3 concurrent issues, and the salesperson at Mid-Atlantic was the most helpful in determining what issues needed what solution.  We decided to go with them based on their suggested solution, after 3 estimates. A friend in MD had also used this company for a repair that was over $25000 and with good results, so we felt they were trustworthy. <br /> <br /> We were scheduled for a certain date. As the solution suggested required jackhammering our basement concrete, we made arrangements to move kids and puppy out of the house and notified neighbors.  The first time they cancelled, it was because another job was not approved by the county inspector, and they weren't able to move the crew to our house. No problem, these things happen, and we rescheduled for the following week.  The second time they cancelled, it was because one of their employees wrote down our construction dates wrong. Ugh. <br /> <br /> The third time, they came at the time scheduled and worked through the day.  The crew was fine, though the foreman was the primary English speaker and kept leaving.  The communication wasn't great through the work period of this project - there was no night before confirmation call, no overview of what would happen or the hours the crew would keep.  The quality control manager came by and determined the pipes connecting two different drainage systems to one sump pump were not actually connected, and fixed that on day 2.  <br /> <br /> I had an issue with water forming a puddle where they had "waterproofed" and I called and left a message. I was concerned as I did not receive a call back and had to follow up with them to fix this issue.  I was pleased when the production manager came to my house himself to help fix the issue (which revolved around my utility sink, apparently not around the work they did).  I am hopeful that has fixed the issue. <br /> <br /> Overall, I would say my experience has been good.  I wouldn't say it has been an amazing experience, but I would also say that fair effort has been made to rectify problems as they arose.   Their price was good and I feel that the solution they suggested to our particular problem was the best and most comprehensive of the estimates we received.    <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Buckingham, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
