"We were looking into redoing our old deck and got a quote which we thought was reasonable for our large deck. Then for another estimate, we called 7th State Builders. They explained that for the same cost, we could get a paver stone patio (which in the long run is far less maintenance). The owner worked with our budget and the gentlemen who laid our pavers were extremely professional and worked within our wishes. They removed the deck and finished the patio in about a week. Awesome job! After a week or so, it had rain for a period of time and we noticed that a small dip in the patio was collecting a puddle. After a call, they came out and fixed the problem. We would definitely recommend this company for a patio."

"Fernando evaluated a stone facade on my Colonial Beach, VA townhouse that had come loose due to poor builder construction. He matched the stone perfectly and repaired the original work to like new condition. He was responsive, timely, cost-competitive, and most importantly did grade A work. Would definitely hire for any future projects!"

"We met with Glenn and Josh a few times before beginning the project. They had a nice professional proposal and were always responsive on the phone. They preferred phone and mail over email but that was fine with me.   I priced out about 8 different masonry companies since the price for this foundation and slab was all over the map (range from 9k to 24k).  J&G was slightly higher than the lowest company but their customer service, reputation on Angieslist, and responsiveness made us select them.  We had a few weather delays.  Glenn was great at explaining what they were doing and when.  If I asked them to tidy up the site, they took care of it right away.

They laid the rebar for the footers and while we waited for inspection, the rain made a big mess of everything.  After waiting for the ground to dry out, they cleaned up the holes and removed all the soft mud.  The rebar was all put back into place and we were able to pour the concrete and have it set up.  We also had a piece of rebar attached to the footer rebar for a footer electrical ground.  Once our electrician comes out, the grounding wire can be tied in to the rebar.
After that week, things moved a bit faster with building the block walls with anchor bolts, backfilling, adding a load of gravel for grading, and finally pouring the slab.  In their proposal, Glenn had written that they would do the 6" wire mesh in the slab but then proposed having the concrete supplier add fiber reinforcement to the concrete at the plant instead.  The inspector was okay with this change.  My understanding is that while the fiber reinforced concrete is slightly more expensive, it's less labor.
It's been about 3 weeks and we are very satisfied with the work J&G performed.  Other contractors have all said it looks like they did a great job."

"Painters arrived exactly on time and accomplished all tasks the same day. The manually stripped the deck and applied two coats of stain. They carefully cleaned and then painted the foundation concrete as it had got dirty over the years. They also scraped, caulked and painted a large bump-out window off our living room.

"The crew from ACE was on time, and as I was not able to be at home during the job;  Jim set it up that his crew would call me 45 mins prior to finishing,  so I could get home to pay them.  It worked out great!   The lawn and beds are totally free of debris.   Thanks to all at ACE

"he repair occurred on June 16, 2014.  His crew focused at the top of the chimney and the crown.   Two men performed the job for about 8 hours.  I asked him for an invoice which he provided.  It stated the top was repaired including a new masonry cap, new top flue liner, replace loose bricks on the top 3 courses and miscellaneous mortar joint point up to the top of chimney.   I guess what bothered me was the focus was on the top of the chimney.   I can honestly say I don't see any other repair other than at the very top of the chimney just below the crown area.
His website, www.elitemason.com, shows a 10% discount for work of $650 and more.  I asked him about it.  He said I got a friends and family discount which is not reflected on my invoice.
I also questioned the 2-year only warranty on the invoice since his website states: " Our owner has more than 20 years of experience in working with concrete, stone, and brick, and knows exactly how to handle any project. If this father of four feels like he can?t look a client in the eye and tell them their masonry work is good for 20 years, then he won?t do the work."  His invoice states the warranty only covers the work performed.  I certainly understand that.
I sent him two e-mail messages dated June 18 following up on the work performed.  He never replied to them.  I sent him a message asking him to modify the date because the work was performed on June 16, not June 12.  No new receipt issued.
So, in summary:
1.  No 10% discount.
2.  No extended warranty on work performed.
3.  No correction to date on receipt to pass on to new owners.
Very disappointed.  Bottomline:  Get your estimate with all conditions outlined in writing before the work is performed.

"Very soon after submitting my scope of work, I received a call from Tom who was eager to set up an appointment for a site visit. Because of an emergency, we had to reschedule the site visit, but that was not a problem. After the visit, I was emailed an estimate that was competitive and fair. Since I was ready to have the work done, Tom came to my house and we signed a contract and agreed to start the work within a day or so. As it turned out, Tom had a crew ready and willing to get the job done a day earlier. That worked well with my schedule and the crew showed up on time the day and proceeded with the work. I watched as the experienced crew of professionals went about their job in removing, crafting and replacing gutters and down spouts. Once the gutters were in place, the crew replaced my rotting rafter ends by precisely shaping the ends and fastening them in their respective places. I was impressed with the precision and the craftsmanship employed in getting this part of the job done. The crew went the extra mile by painting the raw wood with matching paint that I had around. The crew was also helpful in making suggestions and making adjustments to existing guttering that I had installed to lead water away from the house. Their insight and help was greatly appreciated. Also of note, the crew cleaned not only my immediate area, but the neighbor's porch roofs and porches that abut my home. Besides the gleaming new gutters and downspouts, there was no evidence work had just been performed. Ironically, I joked with Tom that now that I have new gutters, it would not rain ever again. It was almost 2 weeks later before any significant rain fell by my house so I could see the new gutters in action. I am happy to report, the new gutters are working as desired. Great job from Tom and his impressive crew. I highly recommend Daniel Parks for your gutters and roofing needs."

FAQs for brick or stone tuck pointing projects in California, MD

Masons charge between $70 and $110 per hour. A mason may have a minimum service fee ranging from $80 to $300. Most bricklayers offer free estimates and charge only if you proceed with the project. This clear pricing model assures that professionals inspect your property before beginning work and charge based on your project’s actual requirements.

A professional repointing lasts 20 to 30 years without maintenance and extends up to 50 years when maintained diligently. This process protects your brickwork using high-quality materials that ensure lasting performance and durability. Consistent upkeep preserves its strength and appearance, providing enduring protection and enhancing your home’s overall structural integrity for decades.

You know your house needs repointing when you notice clear signs such as cracked, flaking, or missing mortar and visible discoloration on the brick surfaces. Additional indicators include loose bricks, water damage, and gaps between the brick joints that compromise the overall integrity of the structure. Addressing these issues promptly protects your investment and sustains the durability and curb appeal of your home.

A house needs repointing to preserve both its structural integrity and visual appeal. Mortar acts as a vital bonding agent that holds the bricks securely together. When the mortar deteriorates, it exposes the structure to water infiltration and further decay, increasing the risk of costly repairs. Repointing stops decay and reinforces the exterior, ensuring long-term protection.
