"I got three bids for the retaining wall.  On price, Goodfellows came in the middle.  I was happy with all the bids I received - I thought all were fair and actually, they weren't that far off from each other.  However Goodfellows (Al) was the only vendor who talked about the best way to preserve the health of a huge maple tree whose roots were most likely running through the space where the retaining wall was to go.  Al suggested using boulders, an idea I actually loved.  Boulders could be placed around any roots that would be exposed, and less of the ground would have to be excavated behind the wall because there was no need for gravel backfill.
Weather postponed the project several weeks (snow!), but as soon as the weather was cooperative, Al's team came to install the wall.  They demolished my old wall, plus tore down a fence that was sitting on top.  They also took out a freestanding basketball hoop that I never used.  They used very large boulders in a single row and curved the wall around a parking pad.  Behind the boulders they placed landscape fabric to hold the dirt.  They also poured a bit of concrete around the boulders to fill in some spaces between the bottom of the boulders and the cement parking pad.
They also replaced some concrete steps with stone steps - wider than my previous steps.  Then they used some pavers that matched some existing pavers I already had to join up the new steps and a walkway to the backdoor of my house.
One nice surprise - they cleaned up so nicely and also hauled away some extra brush that I had stacked in a corner of the yard.  They left the area so clean, and ready for the next contractors I had hired to install a fence on top of it.
The wall is beautiful and looks so natural.  I am very, very pleased.  The whole job took about a day and a half.

"Clark Companies of MN did an AMAZING job installing our gravel driveway. They took their time and made sure it was exactly how we wanted it. The guys asked us along the way how we liked it, of course we said we loved it! Weâ ve been living in our new build for about 8 months with use of only half our driveway, Clark Companies of MN came in quickly, reasonably priced and now we can finally use our whole driveway!!"

"We had a different landscaping company come out and install "flagstone" over our existing limestone path. Not only did they do a horrible job, they also destroyed our drain tile which I had flagged for them and left large ruts in our yard. It took them 6 weeks to come back and "fix" the path and "repair" the drain tile. The path looked even worse than it did before the "fix", I had to run the skid steer because the two guys they sent out did not know how to operate one, and they had to use drain tile I had on site because they didn't bring any. To top it off, when they replaced the drain tile, they didn't use a union on one end, and just set the pipe up next to the old pipe, and for some reason they took the sock off as if they did not understand what it was for! It was a complete nightmare. Enter Lester and his crew. They came out, and even though the stones were not the right material for a flagstone path, they were able to take them all out and reuse them to create a beautiful path. Choosing the right company is so important for any project, and I can confidently say that "In The Rough Stonework & Landscaping" is the right place to hire for any of your stone work or landscaping needs! We will be using them again in the future!"

"Stone Age Landscapes was very skilled and knowledgeable. They offered us lots of different design options and touches we might not have thought of on our own to personalize our patio. Tony was very responsive throughout what was a collaborative process. We love our patio, and many of our neighbors have paid us compliments on the new addition. We'd absolutely recommend."

"Their price is very reasonable for the plowing and shoveling of our commercial property in Minneapolis.  They have done a professional job so far, there has been no need for us to follow up or call them after they complete a job due to un-satisfactory workmanship. We are glad we found them."

"Nate from Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie was incredibly refreshing to work with. He was very professional, reliable, fair, and efficient in communicating from the start of the job to the end. The quality of work and attention to detail was outstanding, something that is very hard to find these days unfortunately. I am already under contract for him to build our deck and help finish the basement next year. 10 out of 10!"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Chanhassen, MN

Most shed foundations benefit from a gravel layer four to six inches deep after proper compaction. The exact depth may vary depending on your specific soil conditions, climate, and shed weight. In areas with poor drainage or for heavier structures, contractors might recommend slightly deeper installations. Building the pad in multiple compacted layers rather than a single thick pour helps achieve optimal stability and load distribution.

Gravel pads cost significantly less than concrete foundations. While gravel materials run about $1.25 to $1.80 per square foot, concrete slabs average $6 per square foot. For a standard shed base, this price difference translates to substantial savings. Beyond the initial cost advantage, gravel pads also offer easier installation, simpler modifications if needed, and don't require specialized concrete finishing skills.

For a standard 10-by-12 shed pad, you'll need enough gravel to cover 120 square feet at the recommended depth. At rates of $1.25 to $1.80 per square foot, expect to spend $150 to $216 on gravel materials alone. Remember to factor in extending the pad beyond the shed's dimensions by one to two feet on each side for better drainage and stability, which increases the actual area needed.

The ideal gravel for shed foundations combines stability with proper drainage capabilities. Crusher run ($0.40 per square foot) makes an excellent base layer because it contains various particle sizes that lock together when compacted. For top layers, angular gravel provides better drainage while maintaining stability. Avoid perfectly round decorative stones as they don't compact effectively and may shift under weight, compromising your shed's stability over time.
