The technician, Scott, showed up right on time (which is typical for SPH&A), extremely courteous (also typical), and did a timely but thorough job of the system checkup. "First Shane checked the outdoor unit and quickly found that there was a bad capacitor that was preventing the compressor from starting up.  He replaced that with a spare he had in his truck and the system was working again.  Then he checked the unit in my crawl space to figure out why the heat strips weren't doing their job.  It turned out that there was a bad heat sequencer preventing the heat strips from coming on.  He didn't have that part on him and gave me a quote for another service call to fix them, but suggested that it might be a better idea to replace the unit altogether (which I already knew).  It's a 29 year old indoor unit and 15 year old outdoor unit and it's been running on miracles at this point.
He got me a fair quote for a replacement system that I'm thinking about proceeding with.
I should mention Shane was very courteous, knowledgeable, and he even put on little shoe covers any time he came in the house to prevent messes.  Also, the office was a pleasure to work with.  I called them that morning and the tech was at the house by noon.  At first they said he'd be there within an hour, but then called back to let me know his first call was running a bit longer than expected.  It doesn't bother me when they're running behind as long as I know, so I'm pleased that the office took the time to inform me.
