"We had an excellent experience with Apex Contracting and can’t recommend them highly enough. Andy and his entire team were professional from start to finish. After an ice dam caused a leak into our home, they handled everything seamlessly—from mitigation through the full rebuild. Andy and his crew took great care to protect our home, making sure our carpeting and surrounding rooms stayed clean despite the heavy snow and mud conditions. They were extremely organized, kept all debris contained, and were respectful of our space throughout the entire process. They also managed every aspect of the insurance claim, which made a stressful situation so much easier for us. When the job was complete, our home was left spotless. Truly a 5-star experience—we’re so grateful for their hard work and professionalism!"

"Service was great from sales, to installation, to post installation support. Very responsive, very professional. It's hard to find in this 'space'--there are a lot of shady people in basement water damage/repair, and this place exceeded expectations. We've had our repair in place for 4+ years, with only 1 small issue on a wall seam crack, and that was fixed within 24 hours of reporting the issue. Stand up place! Thank you for such great service and support."

"American Home replaced my roof and siding, porch windows and some add-on exterior lighting. One of the reasons I chose AHR was not just due to the best price, they came in line with other estimates I received, but because they included things with their final price that similar companies had as add-ons at an extra cost such as the dumpster and gutter system. I did not know what to expect as this was the first time I've had these things replaced. My rep John was awesome, he was professional, friendly and accommodating, and was able to work with me on the spot vs. "I have to check back to the owners" which I got from other companies. John was readily available by phone, text, and in person. He walked me through all the steps, timelines, and the whole process. After the crew finished, he took my list of 'nit-pick' things and made sure they were addressed. Overall I am satisfied with the job, In fact, we recommended them to our neighbors who hired them to do their siding this Spring."

"Came out for estimate in a timely manner, said we would receive estimate via email in few days. That was 6 weeks ago. Never heard a word. Checked email and spam daily."

"The Start Point provided a detailed estimate, very good pricing and completed the job quickly and above our expectations. They were flexible with our schedules and worked clean and efficiently. We were so pleased with the kitchen project, we’re exploring a bathroom project with them right now!"

"If I could give zero stars I would. I booked this company for an urgent project and confirmed date/time on a Monday. On Friday, someone shows up saying they are here to work on assembling my shelves. I said we were scheduled for Monday and he got very aggressive and made a phone call. He kept insisting that he was already here and just let him in to do it and I said no because I am getting furniture delivery and then leaving. He got more frustrated and finally left. I felt very uneasy and considered canceling, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. On Sunday evening, I texted the number to confirm that we were still good for Monday and he responded that we were. No one ever showed up or responded to any of my messages. This is the first time using Angie and honestly this was an awful experience. I assumed there would be some kind of background checking or vetting but I cannot imagine there was because something seemed very off. Proceed at your own risk but needed to share"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Closter, NJ

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
