"The crew arrived on the date/time promised. They were polite, professional, and worked non-stop (except for 2 short breaks and lunch). Because of my landscaping, the crew determined the best way to get to the bottom of the foundation was to dig a hole—24” x 8’. It was truly impressive—perfectly squared off. They sealed the wall, replaced the dirt, and replaced decorative stone. They then installed a 50’ French drain—trenching, refilling the trench, and removing excess debris. The crew worked as a team, did a top-notch job, and left the job sites better than they found them. It took them 4 days—and they never wavered from an extraordinary work ethic. That was last week. This week? We’ve had torrential downpours and flooding—but my basement and garage are dry. I’d hire them again in a heartbeat."

"Freddy was very professional and knowledgeable and explained that the water issues were not the result of foundation issues and explained what he could do if i wanted a dry basement. He did not try to sell me something that i did not need."

"As facilities maintenance coordinator for West Point Hunt Club, I was tasked to solicit bids for the repair of a foundation problem that was causing cracking in the block walls of the house. Bedrock Foundation Systems, Inc. was the first of three contractors that I contacted. <br />    <br />   Jim and Jason met with me on a Saturday and were on time, despite the fact that their company is based in Virginia Beach and our club is in the West Point area. Communication with them has been excellent and prompt. <br />   Both gentlemen were very cordial and took the time to thoroughly explain the cause of our problem, the method and materials they were going to use and also answered all of the questions I had for them. After meeting with the other two contractors I requested quotes from, they were the only one that took the time and were able to fully explain the conditions and the work necessary to re-stabilize the house. The scope of their work not only included the foundation lift, but also grinding out old mortar joints, tuck-pointing the mortar joints and replacing any  cinder blocks cracked during the course of the job, not so with the others. Bedrock handled all permits, called Miss Utility and also consulted with a Structural Engineer before any work was performed. <br />   The contract was sent promptly and was written in terms that were concise, easy to understand and explained the work in every detail. There were no "escape" clauses nor any hidden/overage costs at all, just a promise to perform all work as stated in a workman-like and professional manner. Bedrock is a family owned and operated company and it shows, even in the contract they submit. <br />   The workers came, in force, performed all of the work in half of the estimated time! The job site was clean, no trash or debris left behind. Great job! <br />   We have noticed some slight cracking in the block work around the area that was lifted and understand this is due to the building "settling in" after the lift.  We notified Bedrock of this and have told them that we will give the building a month or so before calling them back for repairs. They concurred and thanked us for our patience and understanding. I am fully confident they will be as prompt with repairs as they were in every other aspect of the process. <br />  Bedrock Foundation Systems, Inc was the highest bidder on this project, however, they were the only contractor to propose a turn-key job. No having to deal with a mason, no questions about who is responsible for any repairs or warranty claims, lifetime by the way, just a good "gut" feeling we have chosen the right contractor for our needs! Thanks, Jim, Jason and all employees at Bedrock who took part in the job. A job well done! <br />   If you are ever in need of this type of work, you owe it yourself to contact this company for a bid. Thanks Angie's List!! <br />"

"Ray and his team did an awesome job replacing our deck! We collected three estimates from various companies and C&R’s estimate was by far the best value. We were very impressed by the quality of the work. They worked with the county to get the permits and inspections completed and were very efficient. We felt like we got a superb quality deck for much less than other Northern Virginia contractors were charging. I am glad we chose to go with this family-owned business. It felt like we got the product we wanted for a reasonable price and didn’t get “the run around” that larger contractors give you. Our neighbors have given us so many compliments on our new deck! Would definitely recommend them to others!"

"Chuck and his crew were a pleasure to work with. As with any job, problems arose and changes made and he was pleasant throughout the 8 week process. He coordinated the plumber (job included replacement of plumbing), electrician, tile and glass guys, etc. also getting the necessary permits. He worked with the plumbing supply people when we discovered the wrong faucet had been delivered. He was okay with reusing the medicine cabinet and a vintage ceiling light. Worked around an existing corner cabinet adding wainscoting on the walls. The electricians installed the sconces upside down and Chuck quickly turned them right side up for us. They took out the existing tub, built in a shower stall, tiled with white subway and black accent tiles, installed a shower nook, replaced the window in the shower stall with glass block, redid the floor tile, installed new toilet, sink, towel bars, etc. <br />"

"Matt was prompt with his response to our request for an estimate. He worked within the rates provided by the penny pinching insurance company. He stayed in contact with us throughout the two month long project. He took a bare stud and concrete gutted basement and turned it back into a great living space. He was flexible as our plans changed. The guy is a true jack of all trades. The project took longer than we wanted, but not all of the delay was the contractor's fault. He was also amenable to our expectations that minor defects be fixed. <br /> We intend to employ him again to work around our home. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Courtland, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
