"We discovered that we had a radon reading of 11.4 ppm with an acceptable level of only 4.0 ppm. I joined Angie's List to find a qualified company in my area to learn what could be done. I chose A and R Environmental with a A rating based on several positive reviews. I called Aand R and spoke to a very knowledgeable young lady about where radon comes from, it's cancer effect on health issues and how to get rid of it. She explained in detail the mitigation process, the system itself and the cost of installation. That was on a Tuesday. An appointment was made for the following Thursday at 1:00 pm. The crew showed up on time and we decided on a location in the house to put the equipment. It took only three and a half hours start to finish. The system was installed, the house was cleaned of any debris and I was given a thorough explanation of the system and what to monitor. I can't say enough for Angie's List and the great people at A and R Environmental for their professionalism."

"I had a problem with the water pressure fluctuating. Come to find out, it was the holding tank. The professionals at Waterdrct came out (Dennis) promptly and found the tank was old and waterbound. They were like lightening (in a good way) and had the tank replaced in like 30 mins. These guys are GOOD !!! The water pressure was more than I thought the well could produce. Excellent job and very informative. They are true professionals !! I highly recommend them."

"Mike Cunningham and his son Mike were fantastic! As first time homebuyers, my husband and I were quite nervous the day of the home inspection because we didn't want anything to be wrong with our house! Mike and Mike put us very much as ease. Our real estate agent had recommended them to us because of how thorough they were. She was right! Mike and Mike started on the outside of the house with us and worked their way inside. They explained to us the whole time how to tell what a problem is and what is not a real problem. This really put us at ease. The report they gave us was very easy to read and go through and understand, which was a big plus. <br /> They even performed the radon tests for us, which was good because we ended up needing a radon air system installed in the house! <br /> Although the cost of our home inspection seemed a bit high to us, the quality of the inspection was worth it. They spent over 2 hours going through everything and documenting everything for us. They were also available by phone and email if we had any questions. <br /> I have had friends who did not have good experiences with their home inspectors and when I tell them about Great Pro-Spects they tell me they are coming to me for their information for next time they need one! <br /> Super professional and very thorough! <br />"

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"As a first time home buyer I had no idea what to expect. Margaret was fantastic. She was on the roof, in the attic, going out windows, etc...Margaret even found evidence that decades ago there was some sort of fire in the basement of the home I am buying. 1 day after the inspection I got a 64 page report with pictures of basically every part of the house. A couple days after that I got the radon numbers back. Margaret is the one to hire."

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Enfield, CT

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
