"Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories, Inc. sent a package with 2 vials and instructions for collecting the samples.  I collected the samples as instructed, completed a questionnaire, and returned the sample vials as instructed.  A week or two later they sent the analysis.  Everything went as expected.  There were no problems. <br />"

"I am a person who knows a little about home construction, radon, household electrical work and air movement so I was understood the where and how the pump would be installed. That reduced my anxiety about the cost and the way the pump would be installed. Before the installer arrived I removed items stored near the area of installation. I had the radon pump installed for health reasons after  I found a high level of radon in the basement family room (not because I needed it done to sell the house). I'm hoping that the results from the test kit will show that the pump has reduced the level of radon in our basement level family room."

"An ABC representative showed up on time for the scheduled appointment.  He examined the problem I'm having in my basement and concluded that he was not willing to take on the job.  The issue with the basement is water damage to the plaster that's applied over the cinderblock walls.  The source of the water damage has been resolved; the current problem is that the plaster is flaking and crumbling in places, and becoming moldy.  The ABC representative said that the best approach would be to remove the plaster from the cinder block, but that he had no idea how much time and labor it would take, and was not willing to tackle the job.  I was somewhat taken aback, as I assumed that a company called "America's Basement Contractors" would have the knowledge, experience and manpower to do a job like this one.  <br /> I should add that this company is one of four that I have contacted to give me an estimate.  At this point three have looked at the job (the fourth is scheduled for next week); the other two have indicated that they can do this kind of work and have given me estimates to do so. <br /> ABC left me scratching my head.... <br /> <br />"

"The work went smoothly and was done as committed. Murphy's Law was in action, though, as there wasn't enough rain for the pump to kick on until February 2008, 9 months after it was installed. I breathed a sigh of relief when it started to work on the day we were leaving for our winter vacation. As the day went on, I noticed that the pump didn't shut off, so I took the cover off and found that the float wasn't dropping properly. I got it to work, and we went away. Fortunately, my daughter was home, and she called me a few days later, saying that the pump had separated from the discharge pipe and was spraying water all over. I called MAD and Aaron answered the phone. He agreed to get someone over to the house that day, and a few hours later all was well. So, while I could complain about the fact that the pump was not properly installed, it worked when we tested it. I am pleased with his commitment to stand behind his company's work and respond in an emergency."

"After wind blew off a portion of our roof, Advanced responded within an hour to tarp and secure the roof from further damage. This lasted well into the evening on a Friday, and not so much as a complaint from the response crews working on a steep and high roof on this windy night. <br /> Following the tarping of the roof, they handled each and every detail with my insurance adjuster, assisting us with a full and reasonable settlement for the repairs needed. Once they removed the damaged ceiling in our upstairs play room, mold was discovered and a remediation of this was <br /> performed complete with testing. <br /> <br /> This was important to us, because we have heard that this can be tricky when selling a home to disclose the problems and how they were taken care of. A nice insurance policy to say that the mold was taken care of the right way. Repairs started and were complete almost overnight. The crews there were very respectful to our home, and accommodating to our needs. The project manager said at the start of the job that their goal in all of this was to all of this was to make it easy to have a disaster, and I feel that that is exactly what they did. <br /> <br /> Thanks Mike, Darik, Chris, PJ, Pete and the rest of the crews. You guys are great."

FAQs for asbestos testing projects in Erie, PA

Asbestos appears as long, thin, or curled mineral fibers that are not visible to the naked eye under normal conditions. Homes constructed before 1989 are more likely to contain this material, so a professional inspection is essential. Because asbestos identification requires specialized techniques, having a certified inspector assess your property is the safest way to confirm its presence and protect your family’s health.

Free asbestos testing services do not exist. You can purchase testing kits online for $30 per unit, and these kits include lab fees, return shipping, consultation, sampling media, and the final results. The results from a kit are less detailed and accurate than those provided by a certified asbestos testing professional. Since collecting a sample exposes you to harmful fibers, hiring a professional is essential to ensure safety and accurate testing.

Receiving asbestos test results takes one to seven days, but different labs offer varying turnaround times. When expedited processing is arranged, the laboratory completes analysis within 24 hours; standard processing requires up to two weeks. Hiring a certified professional ensures that all samples are collected correctly and results are provided without delay, safeguarding your home throughout the process.

Home insurance doesn't often cover asbestos testing and removal. Many policies have a clause called a "pollution exclusion," which means they do not cover indoor pollutants like asbestos. However, your insurance company might cover something like asbestos siding removal costs if it is released due to things beyond your control, such as storm damage.

If a DIY project or accident in your home releases harmful fibers, you must pay for the test and removal.

Yes, you can legally inspect and remove asbestos in your house as long as it's a single-family home and not a multi-family unit. However, the EPA strongly recommends hiring an asbestos abatement pro since testing can be dangerous.

Pros have all the right tools and safety equipment, and you risk breathing in the fibers by taking samples yourself. They also know how to collect samples and safely dispose of materials properly.

Asbestos encapsulation is a process that seals asbestos-containing materials with a protective barrier to prevent the release of harmful fibers. It serves as an alternative to complete removal when full abatement is not necessary. Encapsulation costs between $2 and $6 per square foot, offering a cost-effective option that contains asbestos safely when applied by a certified professional.
