"I met with Richard to discuss the project scope. He was professional and I received the estimate in a timely manner. Also, the estimate was reasonable. Though the community board chose a different vendor for this specific project, we would have no problems in reaching out to Walter Brown Services for future work."

"I had an excellent experience working with Jose and his team on a number of home improvement / repair projects: sink / vanity installation, toilet installation, faucet installation. He was responsive and respectful throughout the whole process and helped provide me with a number of different options to address various issues that came up along the way. His team was professional on the job and and did excellent work on the project. I’d highly recommend his company for home improvement solutions"

"We had a quote of about $11,000 and we were told that if we paint it ourselves, she would reduce the price by $800 which is what happened. We painted it ourselves. They had an expensive work. Everything had to be done. They had to gut a cabinet which was installed in the wall. We had to completely put a new wall. They had to take out the old vanity, old mirror, old toilet, and they had to redo the floor. They did the floor, the walls, and they put a cabinet. The area with the vanity fit was so odd that they did a custom design and it was beautiful and magnificent. It was the color of mahogany, some wood with a granite top and they had paid attention to all of our details, all that we really wanted on our wish list. They did everything we asked for and they did it in a timely manner. It's a family-owned and operated business so we had a husband, a father and a son all working all of the heavy stuff. Karen would ordinarily does the painting but I did it. What they did was the wall was a real problem because there was a sticky wallpaper on it which had to be fold and sprayed and it was a total nightmare. What the husband did was he put some stuff on the walls and they get nice and smooth, to get rid of all the bumps and scratches and dents. That was much easier than putting drywall in. He did a prep job for me so it was easy to paint and he didn't charge me for that. We got new lights, new fan, and we had to have a new bifold door put on because the door took up the whole room. If you open the door, if you're sitting on the toilet it would bump your knees so it was a silly design. They came up with a very creative idea of using a bifold door and they installed us for us. They did a magnificent, professional job. It was wonderful doing business with them. They did with a great sense of humor and paid very careful attention to what we really wanted. I love doing business with them. When we're going to have our other bathroom done next year, I'll definitely going to call them. I would highly recommend them."

"Once again, AMS Home Remodeling, Frank, was able to clean up my mess.  After ordering a closet organizer unit online. I made the mistake of hiring another company to install the units - 3 total (2 reach in and 1 master).  This original company did not know what they were doing and caused me nothing but more problems (i.e. holes in walls, damaged pieces from closet unit that needed to be replaced, etc).  Frank was able to make time in his all ready busy schedule to come out to take a look at the mess.  He was able to get me into the schedule and complete the install and all repairs from previous contractors by the end of the week.  Frank and his crew (Bruno plus 1) did more than an outstanding job.  Final product is amazing.  I have used AMS Home Remodeling for a complete makeover in my home and I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for an honest dependable contractor.  I absolutely LOVE these guys.
Frank - thank you!!!!

"We just completed renovations to our 24 year old master bathroom in Owings Mill, Maryland. Our experience with Ruxton Design and Build was a positive one from beginning to end.  We were interested in a complete demolition of our existing bathroom and replacement of everything - flooring, walls, fixtures, cabinets, lights, etc.  We obtained three estimates from reputable local companies - one that advertises quite a bit on the local radio, a second from our town that is local and has quite nice Angie's list reviews, and Ruxton Design and Build.  We had not heard of Ruxton Design but were impressed at the consistency and quality of the Angie's list reviews.  Although a bit further from Owings Mills than the other two, we asked them to prepare a bid. As it turns out, the first company does good work but prices were quite high and we didn't see a quality difference in their materials or worksmanship. The second company does beautiful work and may have even been competitive with Ruxton but their attention to us during the bidding phase was quite lacking and their proposal basically a sketch on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet with some vague specs.
Ruxton did an amazing job from the bidding process to working through our final punch list.  Frank, Ruxton's owner, was over within a week of our query to make all measurements.  About a week later, we met him in his beautiful business in Sparks, Maryland.  Frank was totally prepared for our visit with full architectual plans and 3D virtual models of his design which we reviewed in his office on a large flat panel TV.   Just seeing how his proposal was going to look was extremely helpful.  His proposal was detailed, included excellent materials.  Within a week of the initial presentation, after going back and forth on design options and details, we were  signed the contract and placed our down payment.  We found the price to be quite fair and everything they installed was top quality.  We were offered start dates of about six weeks from signing (to allow materials, especially the cabinets, to come in) but elected to schedule 12 weeks later in February 2016  so that our kids were back to college when the work started (we don't share the hall bathroom nicely!).  Michele was extremely helpful taking us through the selection process and Nicole in the front office facilitated every step of the planning process.  Their team was extremely organized maintaing a spreadsheet with all selections, details of any price differences from the allowances, etc.  We were able to make most of our selections from their showroom but they were okay if we got any of the materials from outside (for example, we obtained the granite from a local granite distributor that they recommended and hardware from the fantastic Clement True value Hardware Store in Severna Park, Maryland).  The demolition and construction process went quite smoothly.  They parked a dumpster on the side of our house hidden from the street and completed demolition in the first week.  Frank had estimated up to six weeks and the work was completed on time. The site forman, Chris, is a perfectionist and made sure everything was done to the tee and in a few cases, simply redid any work that wasn't just right.  Ruxton makes use of outside contractors for dry wall, electrical and the plumbers and we were very happy with everyone that came into our house.  On the last day of construction we presented our punch list to them.  The following day, Chris was by early to review the punch list, make a run to his suppliers and knocked off the entire list that day.  As you can tell from this glowing review, we are extremely satisfied customers and in spite an occasional hiccup along the way, Frank, Chris and the Ruxton team always got things right and at the end, we are blown away by our new bathroom.  We understand that they don't advertise, mostly word of mouth, which is enough to keep them busy.  Their very nice reviews on Angie's list  are well-deserved.  Every one from Ruxton was always entirely professional and easy to work with.  What better recommendation can I give than to say that when Frank came over for the final walk-through, we had him take a look at our 24 year-old hall bathroom, a smaller scale project, and hope to get that work done in the next several months.

"Overview of Issue/Repair:
3 Level Townhome (finished basement):
Sliding door off kitchen on second floor was incorrectly flashed.  Due to this, the door needed to be removed, repaired/re-flashed, and reinstalled.  A section of "sinking" kitchen subfloor around this sliding door was also replaced    *Note: at this point we could have purchased a replacement door and had this installed at no additional cost; due to our budget, we decided to re-use the current slider* .  Additionally, a majority of the plywood and window framing below, in the basement, was rotted out. Siding was removed and replaced after all the rot was repaired with fresh plywood and framing.  We did take this opportunity to replace the 2 windows while they were out.
Overview of Experience:
It was apparent from the start that Timothy is clearly focused on understanding and providing what the customer wants/needs and not just obtaining a signed contract.  Timothy met with me in person and on the phone a handful of times prior to finalizing our contract.  Throughout the entire process I felt comfortable reaching out to him for advice and clarification, and never felt as if my questions were "elementary" or annoying.
Timothy was on site each morning to see progress and ensure that everything was meeting our standard.  It is great to have this interaction with the owner.  Additionally, all of his team is punctual, knowledgeable, and friendly.  They take time to show and educate you as they are performing work.  Our family could not be happier with our decision to go with Timothy's Home Improvement; we look forward to future projects!

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Fallston, MD

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
