"I called multiple roofing vendors. Most would companies could not be bothered with considering doing a small job. While Walter Brown did not do the original install of my roof, but they definitely did not hesitate to offer to help. From Alicia who answered the phone to Tyler and Lisa who helped getting me on the schedule. Lisa, Tyler - thank you. If I need any type roofing services in the future, I will not hesitate to call Walter Brown. Thanks again."

"Jose Rodriguez was a basic carpenter. He used up 1/2 hour purchasing materials and I had to go with him to pay for them rather than reimburse him for the items. He had to pay him for the rest of the work which ended up costing over $300 for basic work that any handyman could have done. He left the wooden beam support with bracing and could not return until two days later and I was concerned that my large dog might get injured if she moved this. He left a heavy 2 foot 4x4 in my basement near the air conditioner; he also left the rotted roof support beam on my property which I had to dispose of. I kept the unused and cut wood that was purchased as I could cut it and re-use it elsewhere. I recently hired a real carpenter for replacement of my shed doors and he was a true skilled professional who came to my house and measured the wood needed and hardware and purchased the materials and had an assistant to help him do the work which was an excellent job. Quite a difference. Had I known I would have hired him to do the other work done previously and the cost for his work was at a much better price than the Angie's List "pro". No more Angie's List pros for me. Wherever do you find them and how do they get an A rating?"

"WE WERE VERY PLEASED WITH THIS COMPANY. THEIR PRICE WAS THE LOWEST OF THE MANY ESTIMATES WE GOT. THEIR WORKMANSHIP WAS GOOD. THEY COOPERATED WITH ANOTHER CONTRACTOR WHO WAS INSTALLING FLOOR TILE."

"I am a senior with a background in construction.  After reviewing many contractors and speaking with some of them, I immediately knew I hit the jackpot when I spoke to Danny. <br />   <br /> 1.  He knew exactly what I needed and wanted done when I first spoke to him.  This entailed the replacement, repair, and installation of the items listed above with attention to quality in materials, prevention of future problems, a fair price, and a commitment to starting and showing up once the job was initiated.  Danny exceeded every expectation in these regards! <br /> 2.  I silently knew in advance manufacturers, quality and cost of exterior doors (including the french door), storm doors, door locks and deadbolts, leak-proof door sills for 6 inch exterior walls and a leak-proof barrier on the bottom of the door frames.  Without knowing of my preferences, Danny suggested the identical manufacturers and materials I had in mind.  At this juncture, we met and I hired Danny to perform the work. <br /> 3.  I am beyond pleased with the outcome of Danny's effort on this project.  As an example of his integrity, he asked me to trust him in the design and installation of an exterior octagonal window in a bathroom.  My wife and I were literally blown away with a handcrafted symmetrical waterproof tunnel and inside wall frame he created - more akin to an artistic piece than a window. <br /> 4. Inside work was always minimally invasive using tarps and soft shoes rather than work boots.  Outside and inside cleanup at the end of each work day was respectfully performed leaving no mess. <br /> I would recommend Danny to anyone requiring any kind of interior or exterior installation, modification, or repair as I have seen firsthand examples of his experience, skills, and personal and business ethics.  In fact, Danny is presently working on costs to replace our roof."

"We were extremely pleased with the entire process and how well it went despite the size of the job. There were some delays that were not in his control (sub-contractors not showing up on time but did show up) but he handled them in a professional and urgent way and ultimately did not cause the job to run over. Quality and control really stood out to use because his level of quality and expectation of each stage was much higher then you would see from most in this industry. This was especially important because much of the project changed/evolved through out due to wanting upgrades with cabinets and appliances that needed to be replaced through out. Pricing was fair and right in line with 2 other bids we received for the job (Of course it went over because of the upgrades and changes we requested outside of the original estimate). Overall the entire job turned out great and I would and will use Frank and his company for future work. I would highly recommend him and his business to anyone looking for renovations and/or upgrades to their home, I was skeptical due to some of the reviews listed but very happy I focused on the overall consensus of Ruxton."

"While searching for someone to replace the very large leaking Palladian window above my front door, I found Timothy's Home Improvements in Angie's List. Timothy was quick to respond to my call and provided me with a reasonable estimate. After discussing the job with Timothy I was confident that Tim and his crew were competent and could do the job to my satisfaction. In the course of installing the window Tim's team found rot in the door and side window frames. We modified the contract to cover the rot repairs. Tim's crew went to work and did a beautiful job install the window and repairing the rotten trim. We also hired Tim to install drywall in my basement bathroom, the basement closet, and the garage ceiling. The drywall was installed in a timely <br /> fashion and was finished ready for paint. <br /> I was very happy with the work Tim and his gang did. Through the whole process of installing the window, making repairs to the front door and trim, and installing the drywall, Tim kept us informed of his progress and was always easy to contact (Tim always responded to my calls in 24 hours or less). <br />"

"The job turned out to be a two day job, which we knew in advance and planned accordingly. Had to totally tear out the old tub and surrounding walls. Did run into some minor problems due to being an older house.John did everything he said he was going to do, even more. John was very conscientious in doing the work. He truly does do the work as if it was his own home, even brought the plumbing up to code. Answered any all questions I had with no problems. Will definitely hire them again. Should have done this sooner we are very pleased with everything. Great Job!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Forest Hill, MD

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
