Small jobs welcome

"I cannot give enough kudos to the Conrad Homes crew. Mike West, John and Brian did a thoroughly professional job finishing part of our unfinished basement. The work is well done and finished very nicely; they were efficient and friendly. Work included framing, drywall, trim, suspended ceiling and painting, plus installation of several electrical outlets and ceiling fixtures."

"November of 2014, my wife, my son and our golden retriever moved to a new housing development in Martinsburg, West Virginia. We moved to a new two story home with a basement. The laundry room was located on the top floor. Unfortunately the code-required floor drain was not provided in the laundry room. On January 2, 2017 we had a flood in our home. The flood was caused by the water pipe connection which burst. The water migrated to the hallway and other areas in the master bed room, closets and the to the kitchen, family and dining rooms below. The kitchen ceiling had to be restored. We chose JC Smith, LLC builders from Angie’s List and we received two bids to repair the flood damage. The bid prices from both builders were close. We chose JC Smith, LLC because of the size of the firm. We were happy to choose them. The firm dedicated a team to work on our project and a project manager was assigned to lead this team. The team was professional, attentive and responsive to our needs, and fun to work with them. At the beginning of the project they explained the scope which included the cost, materials, and the project schedule. The work was done by experienced professionals, and they made every effort to make the construction activities not to interrupt our daily lives. We would gladly recommend JC Smith, LLC without hesitation."

"I got them from Angie's List. They finished on project and are now doing another one. They call me, I don't call them. They did a number of things for me so the entire amount for the work they did was about $15,000. Then what happened was ?the fascia behind the gutters had to be replaced. When they were doing that I had them replace the columns on the house, and while they were doing that we found out that the beams that the columns were supporting were infested with carpenter ants so I called a company and had them do the work because they were exterminators so we had to hold up the work until I could get the exterminators to come. Now they are removing the old deck and are putting up a new, larger deck with a sun room -- basically a screened in porch on the deck. Then the porch on that that is attached to the house and we are also pulling a double window and replacing it with a French door entryway into the deck. I don't know if it is there fault but we had issues with the permits from the county. It was about a week delay from the county. ?I don't know about the price but I think they are pretty much comparable."

"Our project was completed without any missteps and on time. Bill Whittington is the best contractor we've ever hired for home improvements. He is very knowledegable and listened carefully to what we wanted to achieve. Bill made himself available to us at all times. Our new screened porch is just what we wanted. Bill's foreman and carpenter were top notch. They were very detail oriented and addressed any small concern we had as the work progressed. They stayed with the work, in all weathers, until completion. We are very pleased and look forward to our next project with the Whittington Construction Group."

"Brian and Jeremiah of Galaxy Construction did a fantastic job building our sunroom. They took a rough sketch and a basic idea and turned it into an awesome reality. They were polite, professional, and extremely easy to work with. Plus, they knew exactly what they were doing and they did it well. We couldn't be happier with the work they performed. They are honest, hard-working, all-around good guys, and I would have no problem hiring them again or recommending them to someone. We are very pleased with the services they performed. They made the whole construction process smooth and enjoyable. In regard to work quality, Brian and Jeremiah are true craftsmen. They are extremely good at what they do and their work shows it."

"The whole job went great. Terry was quick to reply upon initial contact, and was out shortly thereafter to provide an estimate--which was a great value in our opinion. Once work started, as projects go, there were a few things that came up along the way, which we were completely prepared for, as our house does not have an attic, and we assumed that there would be some things that were identified once the ceiling was breached. Terry and his crew handled everything they came across with professionalism and made sure we were walked through and shown everything that was recommended to correct. I would absolutely hire Mr. Fix It Home Services again, and plan to in the upcoming months for additional home updates/repairs. A pleasure to deal with, and quick completion of work. Great job guys!!"

"They came in and had to install carbon fiber straps on 2 basement walls as well as a new waterproofing system. They replaced the sump pump and installed an additional sump pump with back-up battery.  They cleaned up and really did a wonderful job. We are very happy with the work they did for us.   We would highly recommend them!"

"I had the unfortunately circumstance to find my newly finished (within the past couple years) basement had flooded due to some really heavy rains and a failed sump pump.  After we had the cleaning/restoration company come out and clean up I called Randy from Xtreme Builders for an estimate to get my basement back to how it was. <br /> That weekend Randy came out to view the damage, take measurements, and ask what we are looking for.  Never did he try and pressure us into something we didn't want or need.  Within a couple weeks he came back with an estimate which was to both our satisfactions.   <br /> He told me due to the holidays they would not be able to start work until the new year which I was okay with.  I got a call in Mid December (maybe a week after I got the estimate) asking if he could start the work as some time opened up and he would like to get the drywall done before the end of the that week!  Once the drywall was up things couldn't have moved any faster!  It seemed like by the next week we were picking out the carpet and the next week the painters came to touch things up and then it was over with!  We love love love our basement even more than before! <br /> Throughout the whole process Randy was wonderful.  I got a phone call or text at least 3 times a week letting me know of the progress, what is to come next, and anything that I needed to do to help expedite the process.  I never felt like there was anything that I couldn't ask him about and he was always available to me. <br /> This is my second time using Xtreme Builders for a project and again, am very satisfied.  I would not hesitate to use them again for any house project that I had in the future.  <br /> <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Hancock, MD

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
