"Jason and team removed existing and broken aggregate concrete driveway and laid down asphalt. They came on time and finished when they said they would. They had serious construction equipment that didn't never touched my house or a sprinkler head right next to the driveway. Excellent job."

"Alan's crew laid a sidewalk for me in May 2018. I posted a very good review then, as I was very pleased with the work. However, there are some problems with the sidewalk now. After only a year, one of the control joints has cracked all the way accross and to the ground. In talking with Alan, he tells me this is normal. I do not think he understands what I was describing, as I have since learned it is not normal, and even the 20 year old sidewalks in my neighborhood have control joints that are not cracked. My issue is that he does not return my calls. It took three days to get an answer in person, after leaving several messages. He said it would come by and look at the sidewalk - that was a week ago. I have since left three more messages and he has not returned my call or text message. I do know he lost the employee who did such a good job a year ago. I recommended Alan to a friend who was not satisfied with the work, which was clearly not up to the standards of mine. This was after he lost the worker who did such a good job for me. I notice there has not been a review posted since then. I would not recommend Alan based on his unprofessionalism to even respond to an inquiry about a problem."

"Bill explained the job from start to finish, and we made some changes during the project. The additional expense for the change was reasonable and in line with his original bid which was lower than 3 other contractors. We had some weather affect the completion of the job, but when it was clear and warm enough they were on the project. There was a challenging angle that some steps met our paved driveway, and they matched that angle perfectly.
Very pleased with the project and highly recommend them for anyone having patio/driveway work done.

"Service was good. Mr. Emge, the owner, was direct and honest with the cost, issues/constraints that I had with my driveway. His team did a good job as expected and Mr. Emge came to inspect and even finished up the trouble spots himself. I appreciated that he recognized the constraints and issues I had and he did what he could to improve my drainage issues. Cost seemed fair given other quotes - but wasn't the cheapest."

"I have mixed feelings. An issue happened with our driveway when they were putting in some trees in the back. I do not know whether it is so much for them, I think it’s more for our builder. We have a new house. The builder is going to just now take care of it, but we have a huge hole in our driveway. It is hard for me to say because I think I can never really enjoy this project because of this overhead cost. For most part, it is ok and it is adequate. From price point perspective, he is a lot better than other people I have interviewed in the area. Therefore, for the quality of work and for the price I am pleased with them. The craftmanship is good; our end product, the quality of what he used and the product. Some of our frustration just had to do with the communication, I would come home and he would have maybe altered the plan or things that would not look like what we had initially talked about. He was willing to adjust and fix but it was after we kept telling him. It would have been better had he consulted with us before he moved forward. It has a mix bag. I do not know if I am going to use him again. I think I need to distance a little bit from it and before I recall it will take care."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in King William, VA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
