I called  Gallagher Appliance Repair, and Chris Gallagher came to fix it..  I was very impressed with this young man and how he worked to track down the cause of the problem. He found the problem and fixed it. The machine worked. The charge was $90.00.
Later when I went to use the machine, the water filled but drained right out.  I called Chris and he told me that unfortunately it was the timer and he would have great difficulty finding parts because the machine was so old. I needed a new machine, and I asked him, in his experience, which was the best brand to purchase.  I  purchased that brand and was very happy with it.
