"The salesman, JAKE, was extremely helpful. I went through "Angie" to find a good company. Jake contacted that day and was out the next day to review what needed to be done. A quote was sent to me within 2 hours. We accepted and he was here the next day with paperwork. We asked if they could do the job before the end of the year (2025) if the bad weather held out. H&F workers were able to do the job mid December. The old gutters were removed and new ones installed by early afternoon. All mess was cleaned and old gutters were hauled away. Beautiful gutters installed with no signs of workers ever being here. Jake was a joy to work with. Listened to exactly what we wanted, made good suggestions and was fast to get back to us whenever needed. One of the best salesmen we have used in Many years."

"Had a fence installed (if you see this as a deck project that is due to "fence" not being an option) Summary: Premium fence for premium price. You are given a message board through their website. Make sure you use it as we found the seller did not pass everything along and we had some miscommunications with others. The fence is great and the installation is great. The markup on the fence is high. Due to a situation there was question if 65 feet of fence would be ripped out. It ended up not being ripped out and apparently the markup price is so high the ripping up of 65 feet of fence and disposal didn't add anything to our price..."

Small jobs welcome

"I received a response within minutes of requesting information from Angi for prospective contractors. Sent multiple pictures to Nicolas with a variety of issues that needed taken care of along with a brief explanation of what was needed. He sent me a quote and scheduled me expeditiously. He showed up on time, kept me informed regarding what was going on, did things that I hadn't even said needed done. He saw it, it was simple fix on the wall and he took care of it. Beyond professional and will definitely be hiring him again to take care of more work when I'm ready for that to be completed. I've already referred him out to two friends! Amazing and professional, work looks great! Heck he even fixed some screw ups that the builder jacked up years ago. You will not regret hiring this business/contractor. "

"I highly recommend Fence and Deck Depot for anyone looking to undertake a deck project. In 2022, I made the mistake of cutting corners by opting for a cheaper option with a big box retailer, and it ended up being a disaster with a failed deck by the city and a settlement that took nine months. Luckily, Fence & Deck Depot came to my rescue and provided top-notch service and materials. The Deck: The crew of two took one week to finish. One aspect that truly stood out was the level of craftsmanship displayed by the team. They paid meticulous attention to detail, ensuring every composite panel was perfectly straight. Even the parts of the deck that no one would typically see, like the lumber pillars underneath the deck, were painted to blend in. Before leaving the project, they hosed down the deck and removed any debris. The commitment to excellence and a high level of integrity sets them apart. Experience: From start to finish, the professionalism of the Fence & Deck Depot team was exceptional. They consistently maintained clear communication at every step of the process, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience. What truly sets them apart is their willingness to go above and beyond. Initially, we had our deck installed by a big box retailer to save costs. Unfortunately, the deck failed multiple city inspections, requiring its complete removal. Fortunately, the Fence & Deck Depot team stepped in, offering guidance and answering our questions as we navigated a settlement with the original installer. What's remarkable is that they were incredibly responsive, addressing numerous emails and phone calls even though we had yet to officially become their clients by signing a contract or providing a down payment. Their support was entirely in good faith, and we greatly appreciate their dedication to helping us through our difficult situation."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Maryville, IL

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
