"I had been unhappy with another firm in Madison that has worked on both our furnace and central air conditioner, so I contacted Clark, based on a recommendation from Dan of Jenko's garage doors, and checking on Angie's list, where Clark was highly rated. They sent a serviceman (I think it was Kevin) last Tuesday, who inspected our system, which had been installed in 1992, and determined it was leaking Freon. He indicated that repair was not a smart option on an old system and recommended a new air conditioner. Andy came came out on Thursday to give us an estimate. I asked if he could have it installed on Friday, as it was very hot and humid and we were having guests over for dinner. He said he could make it work. On Friday his crew (Jeff and his partner) spent about 5 hours removing the old unit and installing the new one. They were completely professional and thorough. By 5:00 the house was cooling down. I highly recommend Clark Heating and Cooling."

"Mr. Ferrell first connected his computer to my computer via internet and worked for quite a few hours trying to determine what exactly was wrong. The next day he continued working from his computer for several hours. He determined he would have to have my desktop tower to complete the repair. He and my son met in Huntsville to exchange the tower. He then cleaned up a lot of what was wrong and reloaded Windows 10. He deleted the D: drive which had way too much memory allotted to it. The tower was returned and I plugged it all back together and it is working better than it did when I first purchased it. I would use him again and I recommend him highly to anyone needing computer updating and/or repair. His work is warrantied and he is very personable, knowledgeable, and helpful."

"

Initially things went well. A/C was not working so we called Harker.  Nice guy came out to check what we had and convinced us to replace furnace as well as the A/C.  Installation was prompt and went well.  So far, so good.  Three weeks later, on a hot Sunday, the A/C stopped working.  I called and was told there was nothing they could do on the weekend, but they'd come right away on Monday.  After we had a hot, sleepless night, someone did come on Monday and "fixed" the A/C.  He left no paperwork or info about what he did, but the A/C worked so we didn't care.  The next Sunday, hot and more humid that the last, the A/C again stopped working.  I called and the on-call guy (Jordan?) came out even though it was Sunday, since we had already gone through a "repair" that didn't last.  He found the unit couldn't be repaired and would have to be replaced.  So again, no A/C.  But he said we would be on the priority list on Monday to get the unit replaced.  On Monday we got a call from Harker saying they needed to order the part and it would take 7-10 days! They said they cannot replace the unit from inventory since Carrier will not cover that under warranty.  The replacement had to be ordered from the factory, and the factory would not ship for about 5 days.  And neither Carrier nor Harker was willing to pay for fast shipping.  So another week or more without A/C.  But that's not Carrier's problem and it's not Harker's problem, it's OUR problem.  The measure of quality and service is best shown when something goes wrong, and both Harker and Carrier come up very short on both quality and service.

Update---after I posted the very negative review above, the very next day I got a call from Harker saying they would install a new replacement unit the next day.  And they did.  And it's been working well since.  So everything is good now. Thank you Angies List.  Nothing else was working, but a negative review here got their attention.  Too bad my original concerns were not addressed until I resorted to a public negative review.

"I wanted to avoid having several differnet companies come through after purchasing a home.  I went with Sears Home Services because the prices were compatible and the ratings were good.  The A/C units were service on one day and the duct cleaning was performed the next week.  The A/C technician was extremely professional and explained exactly what was being done during each step.  One of the units was slightly overcharged so he recovered a little of it to put it in optimal range.
The duct cleaning crew was very professional and performed the service fairly quickly.  The A/C duct cleaning was a little expensive but convenient due to having everything done at once.  They did miss a little of the cleanup but it was easily vacuumed.  The dryer vent cleaning was excellent.  I had already known there was a blockage in the pipe and they were very efficient in unblocking it and making sure it was clear.

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."

FAQs for window a/c unit service or relocation projects in Middleton, WI

If your window air conditioner is relatively new or of high quality, repairing it can restore optimal performance and protect your investment. However, for older units or those with ongoing issues, it might be more cost-effective to replace the unit to ensure long-term efficiency and reliability. Consider the unit's age, the severity of the problem, repair costs versus replacement, and energy efficiency ratings when making your decision. If repairs cost more than half the price of a new unit, replacement is typically the better option.

Window air conditioners last eight to ten years on average. After this time, you may notice decreased efficiency and component wear. Replacing an older unit can improve energy savings and provide updated features like remote controls and better overall performance. With proper maintenance including regular filter cleaning, coil checks, and professional servicing, you can maximize your unit's lifespan.

If your portable AC isn't cooling, it might have a refrigerant leak or a circuit malfunction that's preventing it from working properly. It's best to contact a local air conditioner contractor to inspect and repair the unit. If your AC is older and repairs don't fix the issue, replacing it might be the most effective solution.

Removing a wall-mounted AC costs $55 to $75. Completing the removal yourself at the end of each summer season, being sure to do so according to proper guidelines, keeps you within this cost range. Should you require professional assistance for removal and disposal, if you can't move the unit yourself, expect an added fee of $25 to $50 to the overall cost.
