"This was a remodeling job. Ed finished 800 sq ft of basement. Framed walls, drywall, insulation, electrical outlets, suspended ceiling, lights, installed doors. (Flooring was done by a company he recommended.) He impressed me by carefully listening to what I wanted and provided valuable advice throughout the design and execution of the work. He started work promptly and skillfully coordinated the work of his employees and subcontractors so that there was very little downtime. Workers were very competent, friendly, and respectful to us, the homeowners. I highly recommend him for any type of remodeling or new construction project and would use him exclusively in the future. I want to recognize him for his quality work, competence, helpfulness, honesty and integrity."

"I called a few places for quotes. The first person to get back to me was Eric from Vangoye Home Improvement. It turned out that I was outside of their service area, but Eric took the time to listen to what my problem was. He then gave me the names of the products I needed and the steps I could take to fix it myself, as the problem wasn't as big or difficult as I originally thought. Not only will I be able to knock out this project in a weekend, it ended up saving me close to $300."

"The crew were professional, respectful and clean. They worked nonstop until everything was in place and cleaned after themselves. My kitchen looks new, my dark staircase to the basement is lit...even at night. The results are dramatic! The price was fair and comparable to what I expected. I plan on using them for other projects."

"We recently moved to a 95 yr old home. We were told we had a dry basement when in fact we did not. We looked in to basement waterproofing with a couple different companies but the scope of the work and the cost didn’t feel like the right solution. We had Don come out and he was very knowledgeable, professional and very courteous. He recommended some things that the other companies did not. He actually talked us out of mor expensive fixes. He said he believes in starting with the least intrusive, least expensive options first. His solutions worked for us. We would 10/10 recommend Don and his crew at Foundation Doctors LLC."

"This is one of the BEST COMPANIES I have ever worked with! They are very responsive & HONEST!! - After they excavated the sites it was discovered there where Helical piers from a past job of theirs from many years ago... maybe even 20 years ago. Nolan Beery came down to Indianapolis to see the piers first hand - and covered them with their lifetime warranty. I was not the original owner that added the piers... they found the receipt that they did do the work many years ago for a previous owner of my home. They covered majority of the pier sites under their warranty. THERE ARE FEW COMPANIES THAT HAVE THIS HONESTY & INTEGRITEY LIKE ACCULEVEL. Acculevel is one of the best companies I have worked with. Hands down if you need any foundation work by a professional company that stands by their work Acculevel is the choice!"

"Jim is quite the professional. He was prompt and explained the work to be done, how long it would take and the overall price. He met all my expectations. His helper was also polite and respectful. When the job was done you would have never known that he'd been there - he cleaned the area just as he found it. I would defintely hire him again."

"Dreamscapes Home improvement does a great job. Joel and his son Joe are a two man crew that do a great job. Very professional and very nice people. They did a great job remodelling my kitchen and dining room. Job too only a few days longer than told but that is no big deal. Very reasonable rates. Had them out another project. They put planked vinyl in my hallway and it looks great. I will call them again for my next project."

"Mark was great to work with throughout this project. One thing that stands out is that whenever you call he always answers. I called him several times throughout the time his team was doing the install and I never once went to voicemail. He's personable and knows his stuff when it comes to windows. Our install had it's share of challenges during and after the install but Mark was committed to providing a quality installation and never once suggested that anything that had to be done wasn't included in his original quote. Overall I know that Legacy Window & Door stands by the quality of their product and I'm very happy with it. <br /> Mark came out to the house to take a look at the basement and the exterior of the house to get an idea of our basement structure and size as well as what the exterior looked like for digging the window wells. He came out on a Friday and I had the quote by mid-day on Monday. Once we agreed to pricing and windows it took a few weeks to get the windows in because they had to be ordered custom along with the well materials. <br /> Once the windows came in he had a team out to dig the wells. It took a team of three guys a couple of days to dig a 6'x5'x6' well (Indiana clay isn't soft). Unfortunately, it started to rain while they were digging which lead to them not quite digging the wells as deep or as wide as was needed. The day for cutting in to the concrete to create the windows came and he came out personally to make the wells deeper and wider so the cutting could begin. <br /> Indiana Concrete Cutting handled cutting the holes in to our 8" think poured concrete basement walls. They did a great job and I would highly recommend them for any concrete cutting needs. <br /> Afterwards, there were challenges with getting the concrete blocks hauled away but Mark was able to contract a guy to do it. <br /> The window installation itself happened quickly and I'm very happy with the finished product. <br /> Unfortunately, a few weeks after the installation happened we had a few days of heavy rain in Indiana (2-3 inches over a weekend) and the window wells ended up flooding and leaking in to the basement (fortunately we hadn't insulated or drywalled the basement yet so no damage was done. I called Mark on a Sunday, he answered and had someone out first thing the next morning to dig the window wells deeper and insert a drain to the bottom of the basement wall where it can drain in to the sump pit. Mark stood by the warranty and I wasn't charged anything for having the drain installed. I was disappointed that this happened and that the drain wasn't installed from the beginning but Mark was a true professional about it. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in New-troy, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
