"<em>Fred, is quite simply, the best plumber I have ever worked with.  He provides the best level of overall service that I have ever received. I have had the good fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Fred on several plumbing projects over the past several years -- bathroom remodels, kitchen work, toilet replacements, and much much much more. In each and every situation, he essentially saved my life -- he resolved the problem quickly and effectively and with the upmost professionalism. As someone who owns several properties, Fred has been a life saver. Fred not only knows his stuff, he is very willing to teach you anything you would like to know about plumbing. He has worked with all types of materials, over the years, and is extremely efficient at working with older materials, like copper, or newer materials, like PVC. He replaces or re-builds things, in a stronger way than they were before. Unlike many professionals, he is very willing to figure out how to build something so that it lasts. While there is an inherent life cycle of most pluming equipment, Fred takes the time to find a way to get the most strength and durability out of the plumbing equipment that he rebuilds or replaces. Specific examples of this include -- replacing hot water pipes, replacing shower pipes, re-locating kitchen sinks, and  whole bathroom remodels. In one of my older houses in Montpelier, I needed to move a claw foot tub and Fred was instrumental in accomplishing that task. In another one of my buildings, I needed to rebuild a kitchen -- Fred was instrumental with that project.  I highly recommend Fred. He is quite simply of one of the "un-sung heroes" of the greater Montpelier area and greater Washington county area. He keeps many, many primary and secondary homes, in Montpelier, East Montpelier, Calais, and the greater area running. He will respond to emergencies. He is 200% reliable as a plumber. He has complete integrity and he is completely reliable. </em> <br />"

"Brownell staff are knowledgeable and patient. For one window, we wanted a custom size that would be compatible with our existing windows; Randy Kaiser spent a great deal of time generating diagrams so that we could exactly how the various size options would compare."

"I couldn't be more pleased with Ed's work.  He's an old-school guy, nearly 40 years of experience, and it shows in his business practice and his craft. <br /> First of all: old school business.  Ed doesn't have a cell phone or email.  He has an answering service take messages and he returns them in the evening.  He returned my message on the same day, and it turns out he was available to come by the following morning to give an estimate.  He measured the roof, did a few quick calculations, and gave me a written estimate - in this case a dollar figure on the back of his business card.  He understood my goal of putting solar panels on that roof and made recommendations for the best approach to avoid problems down the road.  His quote was on par with another quote I received and well below a third quote.  (One of the other roofers I spoke with said, "you'll be pleased with Ed's work." It's a two-man team, Ed and his son-in-law Mark, and overhead appears to be low.  When I accepted his bid, he came by with a one-page three-part form to fill in the deals for the contract.  Ed doesn't take credit cards, and asks for 50% payment via check up front and the remainder upon completion.   <br /> Second: old school craft.  Ed and Mark hand-nail everything because they have more control than with air-nailers - less potential damage to the roof.  Because our garage is right on the property line, he made sure to talk to our neighbor about old shingles ending up on their property, and got permission to put down a tarp.  Ours was a small job - estimated at a day and a half, but completed in a day.  Because they finished their previous job halfway through the day, they started mine the afternoon before I expected them.  Everything was cleaned up and all waste hauled away at the end of the day.  I wouldn't have known they had been there if there weren't packages of new shingles next to the garage when I got home. <br /> They finished midway through day 2 - again, by the time I got home everything was spotless.  He again checked in with the neighbor to make sure they were satisfied with his cleanup.  The roof looks great.  Ed stuck to his quote, he and Mark were extremely polite and respectful, super efficient.  Just a pleasure to do business with.  They even helped jump start my car when the battery died overnight.  I highly recommend! <br />"

"The house was neglected for a while (see the picture of it in white) and badly peeling with lead paint underlayers. Kevin, (who is lead certified) was hired to replace rotting boards, insulate and encapsulate the lead with siding and replace 16 windows. The house looks so much better as you can see from the pictures I have provided (and is now much safer.)"

"He carefully accessed the damage, sent an estimate, followed up with a phone call , and promptly scheduled the work. On the job he put down floor protection and enclosed the work area with plastic sheets to minimize the dust. He supplied all the materials and worked steadily. I felt that his price was very fair. <br />"

FAQs for new windows service projects in Northfield, VT

Yes, bay windows add value to a home. They enhance the property by expanding the interior space and flooding rooms with natural light. Their unique three-panel design creates a stunning focal point that elevates curb appeal and modernizes living areas. This architectural detail increases both functional space and visual appeal, directly contributing to higher home resale value.

Yes, all window types have the potential to become part of a bay window configuration when modified correctly. The transformation involves reconfiguring standard windows into a multi-panel design that features a larger central window flanked by smaller ones. This process requires precise professional planning and custom framing to ensure durability, visual balance, and structural integrity.

Bay windows typically consist of three glass panels extending beyond the home's exterior walls, with a larger center panel flanked by two smaller ones. In contrast, bow windows are composed of four to six equally sized glass panels that create a gentle curve and do not extend as far from the exterior walls.

Bay windows cost more than standard windows because their expansive, multi-panel design requires additional materials and skilled labor. Their construction involves extra glass, specialized frame components that extend outward, and complex operating mechanisms. These technical demands necessitate precise engineering and multiple expert installations, thereby significantly increasing both material and labor expenses.

Bay windows cost three times more than standard double-hung windows because their design requires extra panels, expanded framing, and a more complex installation process. The advanced construction method increases material consumption and demands comprehensive expertise, while specialized window treatments further elevate expenses. This all results in a significant difference in overall project cost.
