"I can highly recommend J Plus Construction after the excellent work they did in transforming my wildly overgrown grass into a beautifully trimmed lawn surrounding my house. Two men worked tirelessly for approximately two hours and did everything I needed to be done with care and attention to my requests. I highly recommend this company."

"The job went excellent. Shay repaired about 100 lineal feet of fencing that had blown down. He placed new posts in new concrete. Did all new framing and even got me a great deal on the fence boards from a local supplier rather than paying over double at the big box stores. He really cares about doing a great job and is meticulous and makes sure everything is done right instead of trying to rush through it. I woukd absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for work done around their home or property. I'll be hiring him to rebuild my deck this spring as well!"

"Jon's work is as good as it gets! We have a rental property that we're preparing to put on the market. It needed a number of repair and update tasks completed, some small and some not-so-small. Everything from replacing siding to building a set of outside stairs to revamping a tile entryway to simply tightening some loose faucets. Jon has been ready, willing and more than able to meet every one of our requests, and his final work is exceptional. I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, and will be calling on him for the "checklist" at our own home, too."

"Order arrived quickly - all in good condition. Have been using them for quite a while now. I love that the pieces lock together magnetically - so no sliding around. You can choose your colors: top and bottom. You do the measuring - they have instructions on how to do that - and it is very simple. Their order department was very accommodating when I called. Would definitely order from them."

"Faced with the decision to finally replace our roof, we got several bids. Jordan made it a point to understand our needs and were on top of scheduling. Pleased with all aspects, from 1st estimate visit, to the install and the final inspection."

"We expected work to begin on the project in April, but he did not end up starting until the beginning of May. He projected that the job would take about one month, but when he started he informed us that he did not have a crew and he was doing the work all himself so we figured it could take a bit longer than that. The timeline wasn't a huge concern for us so we did not push him on that too much. By the end of May our front deck was done and we loved it. It was just what we wanted. Things were taking longer than expected, but there was steady progress and we were happy with the work being done. The progress was steady until the end of July when Dan stopped showing up. He also stopped responding to calls, emails, or text messages for one full week. At that point we had paid him significantly more than the amount of work he had completed. At this time the back decks and stairs were started but had no railing. This was concerning for a lot of reasons, but mostly a huge safety concern. We have small children and a dog that have access to that area of our yard. We started to consider taking legal action. Then Dan got in contact with us again. He explained that he had a lot of personal things going on, he was struggling financially, and he was embarrassed to come clean with us. He told us that he would get the railing ordered and finished the job as we agreed. We were skeptical and lost trust, so we met with him in person to all sign a detailed paper contract which lined out the timeline expectations, future payments, and expectation about communication regarding the progress of the deck. After that communication returned to the way that it was at the beginning of the project, we were hearing from him regularly and seeing steady progress aside from a number of hang ups due to ordering and manufacturing of materials. The job was eventually completed by the end of September. In total the job took 4.5 months from start of demo. This was a very frustrating project for us. However, the finished product is beautiful and exactly what we were hoping for. Dan is talented and does great work although his communication and honesty leaves a lot to be desired. We should also note that although Dan finished the project and gave us what we wanted, he continually over-promised throughout the project. At the end of the project he offered several things like deck chairs or comped items to try and compensate but he never came through. For the last two months we have tried to contact him about these things and with other questions about warranties, but we have heard nothing back from him. His work is very high quality, and the price was very competitive. He did throw in some discounts to compensate for the communication issues and I believe we got a great deck for a fair price. But, we still haven't heard from him, and although the things he promised are really just extra, I do have some questions about how the Trex warranties work. I guess I'll figure that out on my own. I would probably not hire him again, but if I did (and what I suggest to anyone that does), is to have him sign a very detailed contract for the work and do not pay him advances unless you can help it. Basically, cover your hind. I believe he is a decent person, but if he can't deliver he might just cut his losses, dissappear and move to another job. That's judging from our experience and a few other reviews."

"EcoHome Service replaced our roof in summer of 2018. The owner came to meet with us prior to the job and thoroughly walked through the options and process. Once we signed, the job was scheduled promptly. They dropped the dumpster in our driveway a bit early, but the job was done from demo, to plywood replacement (significant for our job), and new roof all in one day. Remarkable. I walked the roof with the lead crew member after the job and thoroughly reviewed their work. No concerns whatsoever. The owner later came back to walk around with us and answer additional questions. We then paid the final invoice and started enjoying our new roof. We later added gutters using a contractor EcoHome recommended. We feel fortunate to have found a reputable company in EcoHome and we enthusiastically recommend them for roof replacements."

"After a long time of research and interviewing several companies, I hired this company to do the work. The work started with several meetings with Adi and we spoke on what to do and how to do including the styles, relocation of the refrigerator and the time scheduling. Adi managed this whole thing and he had his crew working each day while reporting to him about their progress. The first week of work was demolition the old kitchen and prepare the space for the installation of the cabinets. During the whole work, we had no problem with them or with the communications between us to Adi or his office. I'm happy with the new kitchen and with the work that they did."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Oak Harbor, WA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
