"The crew arrived on the date/time promised. They were polite, professional, and worked non-stop (except for 2 short breaks and lunch). Because of my landscaping, the crew determined the best way to get to the bottom of the foundation was to dig a hole—24” x 8’. It was truly impressive—perfectly squared off. They sealed the wall, replaced the dirt, and replaced decorative stone. They then installed a 50’ French drain—trenching, refilling the trench, and removing excess debris. The crew worked as a team, did a top-notch job, and left the job sites better than they found them. It took them 4 days—and they never wavered from an extraordinary work ethic. That was last week. This week? We’ve had torrential downpours and flooding—but my basement and garage are dry. I’d hire them again in a heartbeat."

"Freddy was very professional and knowledgeable and explained that the water issues were not the result of foundation issues and explained what he could do if i wanted a dry basement. He did not try to sell me something that i did not need."

"No complaints. They put the shed up in less than 2 days. Looks great and I have already started to fill it up. Got a quote for some basement framing work seems fair but I need to get other quotes to be sure."

"Chuck did a great job on this job. Chuck worked with us to create stairs into our attic space, handled permits with Waynesboro City so I didn't have to, hired an architect to draw up required items, spray foam insulation for the new attic space, installed 2 new windows with child safety and fire safety in mind, drywall, replaced our outdated electrical box with a new one and ran new wires/outlets to the upstairs space including the closet and stairwell, redid the flooring under the stairs where the closet would be so it would match up to our existing flooring, he provided not only a rough estimate but his rough estimate was VERY close to the actual amount required for the job. This was including some additions to the original quote so I was very pleased with the cost and very much so with the final result. He and his crew worked well making great strides and finished the initial demo/framing etc early while waiting for the stairs and windows to arrive. Once these arrived they jumped back on the project and finished it up as soon as possible - working with us when we could jump in to start the painting, staining and poly coats on the oak stairs and flooring in the closet. He provided a great rough list of items for the contract and terms of payment as the project progressed. I felt like each step of the way he communicated well on where we were at, any potential or actual delays and why, when his crew would be doing certain items with a rough timeline of what certain items would be done ... like x will be done the 1st week, 2nd week, etc, and it was very accurate and things got done. I'm a bit OCD and was relieved that I could share our vision with him and let him run with it - it turned out great and well worth the money! I would highly recommend Chuck to anyone else.
Thanks Angie's list!

"Matt was prompt with his response to our request for an estimate. He worked within the rates provided by the penny pinching insurance company. He stayed in contact with us throughout the two month long project. He took a bare stud and concrete gutted basement and turned it back into a great living space. He was flexible as our plans changed. The guy is a true jack of all trades. The project took longer than we wanted, but not all of the delay was the contractor's fault. He was also amenable to our expectations that minor defects be fixed.
We intend to employ him again to work around our home.

"
We live in a townhouse.  We discovered we had 3 concurrent issues, and the salesperson at Mid-Atlantic was the most helpful in determining what issues needed what solution.  We decided to go with them based on their suggested solution, after 3 estimates. A friend in MD had also used this company for a repair that was over $25000 and with good results, so we felt they were trustworthy.

We were scheduled for a certain date. As the solution suggested required jackhammering our basement concrete, we made arrangements to move kids and puppy out of the house and notified neighbors.  The first time they cancelled, it was because another job was not approved by the county inspector, and they weren't able to move the crew to our house. No problem, these things happen, and we rescheduled for the following week.  The second time they cancelled, it was because one of their employees wrote down our construction dates wrong. Ugh.

The third time, they came at the time scheduled and worked through the day.  The crew was fine, though the foreman was the primary English speaker and kept leaving.  The communication wasn't great through the work period of this project - there was no night before confirmation call, no overview of what would happen or the hours the crew would keep.  The quality control manager came by and determined the pipes connecting two different drainage systems to one sump pump were not actually connected, and fixed that on day 2.

I had an issue with water forming a puddle where they had "waterproofed" and I called and left a message. I was concerned as I did not receive a call back and had to follow up with them to fix this issue.  I was pleased when the production manager came to my house himself to help fix the issue (which revolved around my utility sink, apparently not around the work they did).  I am hopeful that has fixed the issue.

Overall, I would say my experience has been good.  I wouldn't say it has been an amazing experience, but I would also say that fair effort has been made to rectify problems as they arose.   Their price was good and I feel that the solution they suggested to our particular problem was the best and most comprehensive of the estimates we received.

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Onancock, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
