"We were designing a very complicated open plan million dollar house. The structure was complicated with an open plan layout. Todd at Carini was a delight to work with. He had a passion for the project providing excellent advice on everything from floorplan to exterior building material selection. He was always on time providing quality work. Prior to award we priced out the project with three other highly regarded vendors. All were significantly higher (approximately 25-50%). When we presented the final plans to the town and vendors the name and quot;Cariniand quot; clearly carried an excellent reputation. Plans were approved without any issues. <br />"

"We met with Bernie at our home, reviewed our requirements and he prepared a very professional presentation. When we asked him who he might recommend as a contractor(s), he gave us a referral. We asked if there was anyone else...just that one. We called that firm. They came to the house. We talked. We came to learn that the contractor, which has a wonderful reputation, is the brother-in-law of Bernie. When we asked if they would work for us if we elected not to hire Bernie, they said they would and we never heard from them again. Bernie did follow-up in a professional manner, but had hired another architect. <br />"

"Last year my wife and I had enough with our foundation problems.  Our back basement wall and side wall was cracked form the top of the foundation to the basement floor.  The cracks were so big that water constantly came through during and after heavy rains.  We called several different foundation repair companies, but none of them could provide us with what we knew we needed.  We needed a sixty foot section of our basement wall replaced, but none of the companies that we contacted could provide that service.  It wasn't until we contacted Frank Matyiko, owner of Expert House Movers, that we were able to get the assurance that a section of our foundation could be replaced.  Our friends asked us how they were able to hold our two story home up while taking out such a huge section of our foundation wall.  I tell them like owner Frank Matyiko said to me "we combine over 50 years of structural moving experience with 30 years of foundation repair experience and that's how we get it done."  He provided me with a structural engineer and obtained  the repair permits needed for the job, which no other company would provide.  Frank Matyiko oversaw the entire project from day 1 to completion.  Thanks for saving our home, EHM is awesome. <br />"

"I Contacted the firm on Friday Sept 6th, they performed the survey on Sept 11th, a report was issued on Monday Sept 16th and on Tuesday Sept 17th, I had a document from FEMA stating the property could be removed from the flood maps, thereby, my bank has removed the need for flood insurance. With McMahon and Larue having the latest GPS equipment, proper training they are able to file elctroncially with FEMA and get immediate results. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Rochester, NY

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
