"I canâ t recommend Ali enough! A neighbor recommended Ali after another structural engineer was five weeks late getting us our plan. I called Ali on a Friday and he told me he could come out on Saturday to measure and have the plans ready by Monday. He was positive, responsive, and went above and beyond answering all of my questions! It was such a great experience working with him."

"We thought we needed foundation work. They not only told us that was incorrect. They directed us to a structural engineer who would be able to help us. No charge. Most appreciated."

"I was very pleased with the quality of work of the sub-contactors and the oversight and attention to detail of the contractor United Building Services.  I was very nervous about this arrangement, but went forward with the project based upon a very positive referral from a close friend.  The whole project was exceptionally smooth, everything happened as the workers and contractors said with no surprises.  All of the crews were very professional and efficient, and cleanup was very thorough.  We are very pleased with our new roof and venting system, and the additional attic insulation has made a HUGE impact on our heating and cooling efficiency, especially our gas bill.  The temperature in our second floor is now more consistent with the rest of the house.  I would recommend this company to my friends and family, and I do plan to contact them again the future for additional work at our home. <br />"

"I called Dave because we are remodeling a 1918 home and I wanted to have the floor joists inspected. Dave was so great. He gave me recommendations for my joists, he walked me through basic home maintenance items that I was not doing and not even aware of. He also gave me information about additional items that I should consider outside of the scope of my project. He seems to really care about what he does and I am so appreciative. When we bought the home the inspection we had elsewhere was a joke. I will be recommending Dave to anyone needing inspections in the future."

"He confirmed that there was no imminent structure problem and that the structure was better than basic code. The engineer was named Jon. He was a real nice guy. He was someone you would want to deal with as a customer which is good for the company. The price was more or less the going rate if I am not mistaken but I am not sure. The analysis took them at least two hours, maybe closer to three hours. There was nothing that I didn't like. He was knowledgeable and paid attention to detail. Some engineers have poor social skills but he was a nice guy and I went along with him so I could see what he was talking about instead of reading a report. I would recommend them to other members."

"Robin was very nice and answered our questions.  Her husband is a structural engineer, which we thought was great because our lot may need some input from a structural engineer so the team approach was appealing to us.  We met for approximately an  hour.  After we left we sent an email a couple of weeks later with a few more questions and never heard back.  We ended up going with a different architect.  I feel like Robin is much better suited for remodels and additions rather than designing a house from scratch...not that she couldn't do it, but her recent experience hasn't been designing homes.  (our emails may not have reached her and we didn't pursue her further because she didn't seem like the right match for our needs at the time.)  <br />"

"We bought a building that was going to be demolished in the Page extension/ Hwy 364 route.  We owned property adjacent to the building and had Expert House Movers move the structure approximately 1000 foot across a roadway and onto a new foundation.  I was amazed that they were able to do it without any of the brick fascade cracking/crumbling.  Before the building was lifted and moved, we inspected the interior of the building and took a black marker to areas of interior drywall cracking. After having them lift and move the building, there were no new cracks and the existing cracks were unchanged.  I couldn't believe it.  I would highly recommend them.  It's unbelievable to see the buildings and structures they have moved. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Detroit, MI

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
