"I can’t say enough fantastic things about this team. I hired them to do a structural assessment/plans for my long-awaited home renovation. To start, Rob contacted me after my inquiry within the same business day. At that point I had gotten a few quotes and found their pricing to be the most reasonable. In staying with the theme of responsiveness, to keep my project on schedule, I needed plans back within about a week, and to my joy, they delivered! Before this, hiring a structural engineer seemed daunting, but they made it easy. Everyone - Rob, the engineers (Miguel & Steve) and Michelle, (their operations manager) were so accommodating and friendly. If the thought of hiring a structural engineer stresses you out, call CBS. If you hire them I think you’ll understand why I’ve given them such high praise ?"

"Criterium-Schimnowski Engineers is a company that stands behind their commitment to excellence. I purchased a 95 year old home six months ago and started to become very concerned after noticing the unevenness of the flooring on the 2nd floor- wondering if it was a structural issue. I was just sick to my stomach thinking that my life savings went into the purchase of home that may have issues that could not be corrected. I started looking online for structural engineers in my area and stumbled across Criterium-Schimnowski - so glad I did! Paul came out to my house (on time!) and listened closely to my concerns. He did a very thorough examination of the house and then gave me a summary of his findings before leaving. The next day, he sent a detailed written report of what he found, and how to correct the issues he found. While Criterium-Schimnowski is a bit more expensive than other companies that do this work - you get what you pay for. I would highly recommend this company!!! Peace of mind is so worth it!"

"It went very well, this was not an easy task due to the attachment point for the rail was not ideal. However Andy and his fellow co-worker used their creativity to secure a strong practical rail. These guys were very professional he kept me informed about his arrival time and encouraged open communication. He was willing to work with me financially and the price was very reasonable. He was concerned about my satisfaction. I would definitely use this company again and refer them to others. I think reviews are important when finding someone to do a job that meets your expectations, Again you won't be disappointed with this company. Also his time from me contacting him to doing the job was 3 days. Thanks again for a job well done."

"We had been told that one of our basement walls was bowing in. There is a very large ash tree planted about 5 feet from the wall so we suspected that might be a factor. Shannon came to our home and spent about 45 minutes to an hour looking at the foundation walls and taking photos. He gave several options for what we could do and discussed the pros and cons of each. He also answered several other structural questions we had and gave advice on how to handle them. Then he took the information and photos back to his office and emailed us a detailed plan a few days later for how to reinforce the wall against the weight of the tree. The plan specifies exactly what will need to be done and we can just present it to a contractor when we are ready to have the work done. We feel we got a good value and we will sleep better knowing that we had professional structural engineering advice about our problem. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"Peter is very thorough with every aspect of his work. He worked with me and my husband to design a deck that would suit our <br /> needs, complement our house, and stay within our budget. We were very pleased with the results of the project and love our new deck. Being a structural engineer, we were extremely confident with his expertise. A safe and attractive deck was paramount for us. He did run into an issue outside his expertise and he guided us in finding another professional to correct it. We can't speak highly enough on our experience with Peter, and would hire him again. <br />"

"Highly recommend and excellent person to work with!! Responsive, detailed, honest, and does the job right. We had a complex job of moving our staircase and adding a basement window. Staircase required structural engineering and was a project many people turned down as they felt it was too complicated. In addition, he cut a 5’x4’ + hole through foundation to add a window. He was priced well, and did excellent work. We can’t recommend him enough and look forward to completing more projects with him!"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Minneapolis, MN

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
