"I would (and almost certainly will) work with AGGO again! We are buying a house and something came up where we needed a structural engineer to inspect something on very short notice. I reached out though Angi's to any company that might possibly employ structural engineers and Linda, a Structural Engineer with AGGO got back to me right away, first thing in the morning and was able to squeeze us in that very night. Linda was thoughtful and thorough. She careful looked over everything and even brought a large, bright light since it was after dark. She took her time, answered all of our questions, and gave us advice on other concerns and things to watch out for as well as reassuring us about things we didn't need to worry about in this situation. Even though she was probably working past her normal work hours to squeeze us in, nothing felt rushed or hasty. "

Customers say: Super punctual

"Martin and Jake are the absolute best to work with. They were thorough, efficient, professional and so easy to work with for our basement structural work. They took time to explain what needed to be done, coordinated with different contractors (plumbing, electrical), and were able to complete our project on time while we were out of town for just a week(!!). I can't recommend Great Lakes Builders more - they were a pleasure to work with and we will absolutely be using them again for any future work we need. 5+ stars!"

Customers say: Quality work

"Thank goodness we found Faron & Associates, Inc. Our 97 year old home had structural problems that were out of the expertise of the 9 contractors that we had contacted. After explaining our dilemma to Home Advisor, they recommended Faron & Associates. Communication with Michael Faron was immediate. He returned our phone call the same day. We agreed to meet the next day and evaluate our problem. Mike arrived the next morning right on time and took measurements and pictures. He said that there were several ways to solve the problem and would prepare two alternative estimates. We received the estimates within the next week accompanied by a recommendation for contractors that could handle a very complex job. Mike was always available to answer questions and attended our meeting with the chosen contractor. Work was started within the week. Everything was done professionally and timely. The job turned out beyond our wildest expectations. The result was perfect and done start to finish in about 10 days with little disruption to our daily routine. Weâ ve already recommended Mike to a friend seeking a structural engineer. Thank you Michael Faron."

"I hired Martins to convert my two-unit rental property to a SFH in 2016 and I am thrilled with the results. What he was able to do with my budget is nothing short of amazing. Everyone person that has seen it has commented on how great the place looks and the attention to detail of the work. After a terrible start to the project with a crooked contractor I had started with, working with Martins has been an absolute joy to complete this undertaking. My project was to convert my rental property to a SFH. Martins took over a project that was a complete mess. I had been working previously with another contractor, to dig out the basement and do the conversion. After stealing much of my money and not getting the permits, I had a partially dug out basement and a gutted house. Martins took over and put together a plan of how to complete the project and started working with my bank for the arduous post-renovation value mortgage loan process. When I was looking for contractors, the most important attributes are integrity, passion for their trade, attention to detail, reliability, and creativity. Martins scores off the charts in all of these facets. Martins took existing design plans and redesigned it in a much more functional way to use the space. He was able to take blueprints and high level ideas to create elegant and sophisticated designs. Martins is one of the most honest people I have met. He is clear about the risks of doing something and gives his feedback on whether he thinks it is a good idea. Whenever something went wrong throughout the project, he brought it up quickly and let me know the options to resolve them. He also has negotiated back refunds for me from some sub-contractors when he thought there were issues with their work, although they were imperceptible to me. He also only works with tradespeople that have his similar attention to detail and integrity. In summary, I can’t recommend Martins enough. He is a joy to be around and his honesty and passion for his craft is evident in talking to him and seeing his work. His rates are extremely reasonable when you consider he has a formal design background and his planning and attention to detail minimizes/eliminates costs from rework or mistakes"

"When our remodel permit was delayed by our village we were required to get an analysis by a licensed structural engineer. In the middle of the summer remodeling season, it was difficult to find anyone immediately available. We received a reference for Jonathan and his business, Enginkeering. Most importantly he was available immediately and came out the next day. It took him a week to deliver the material. Subsequently our permit was approved. Jonathan was quick, thorough, and professional offering us two potential pricing options. We chose the more expensive one to give us greater confidence in a favorable outcome which we received."

"Mark was absolutely phenomenal. I specifically wanted someone with engineering experience and the owner of Domicile recommended I use Mark. He was beyond thorough and had exceptional attention to detail. He walked me through the steps he was taking and what he was looking for. If he found something deficient, he gave me suggestions on what needed to be done to make it passable. He also found that the sellers were dishonest about or unaware of some issues I specifically asked about. By the end of his inspection, I knew that we were not going to go through with the property so I told him to not worry about writing up the full report. As a result, he provided me a discount on the total, which was greatly appreciated."

"Bret was very thorough. He looked at our house in its entirety. He was patient with all of our questions and concerns. He took the time to educate us about various things related to the structure of the house. He made excellent recommendations. We had another company come out prior to give us an estimate on repairs and by his assessments, we realized that the company was trying to pull a fast one. Would hire again."

"Stephen came back to my house several times to review the details of my project. I was quite particular about some of the design technicalities, and he was very responsive and attentive to all of my concerns. Stephen revised the drawings several times for me and offered a few different choices for how to proceed with the design. I am very happy with the final drawings and I would definitely use JSG Design again. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Chicago, IL

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
