"We hired a structural engineer even after our home inspector said he didn't notice anything about the wall. Due to FHA financing, the under writer wanted to see a report about the structural report, due to us writing that in as a contingency on a home offer. <br /> It went well. It was completed in an  hour. The engineer was thorough and explained everything in an understanding way. He gave the pros and cons about the support wall structure and saved us from buying a home that would need structural improvements! Highly recommend for those who are in need of a second opinion. <br />"

"Mr. Nall was very patient and informative. The company has done extensive commercial work, so he was able to offer design suggestions that were more creative then we'd even thought possible. Unfortunately, we were unable to engage the firm's services as they insisted on us giving them our financial information so that they could pull a credit report on us. They explained that they do this with every client and have found it necessary because they do not bill in advance of services being rendered. Since we were unwilling to give our financial information to them, they would not work with us."

"The initial assessor was very nice. He did a good job with looking over the kitchen layout, the structure of what we wanted to re-do and the foot prints of the house. He basically looked at the prospective of what would improve the flow in the kitchen as well as what would not be cost effective. We really appreciated that. He was very timely in getting us hooked up with one of their design people to look at more details for the cabinets, tile, backsplash, countertops and things like that to help us co-ordinate the design. They were the main things with the initial phase. The two workmen that came out were extremely professional. They very good at doing the assessment to figure out as to what type of flooring we could use in our connection to the floor biopsy, to see what the structure and support the floor had. They did it in an area that they knew they would not have to worry about later, not compromising the appearance or the stability of the floor. They were very good. They were prompt every day. They did not come too early but they came at a very consistent and reasonable time. They were very good about setting things up and to minimize the amount of dirt and dust in the rest of the house for the amount of the work that they were doing. They talked us through every phase of the remodel very effectively. They contacted us and went through a detailed cost benefit review for any changes or alterations or suggestions. They were able to tell us what the benefits of cost would be for any modifications that we made in the plan. Every day they cleaned after themselves and took down their hardware as the place that we had was very little. They were also very good about telling us as to what to look out for when they were re-doing the floors. They told us what areas we could walk on. They got us set up with some scaffolding so that we could still walk over in the kitchen through the back door when we needed to. Overall, they did a very good job. I would absolutely use them again in the future."

"<p>The engineer was able to provide clear and detailed drawings which not only the remodeler could understand but so could I.  They responded in a timely manner which enabled us to keep our project moving ahead since removal of the walls was not in our original plan..</p> <br />"

"Joe and team did an amazing job recently renovating our entire kitchen - they did everything from installing all new cabinets, to tile work, plumbing/electrical and fixing issues that came up as they went. They always showed up on time and kept the house very clean of dust and dirt - another plus they were kind to my dogs and kids while being in the home :-). They are very professional and do excellent work."

"It appeared to go seamlessly from start to finish. The job may have stretched into four days but he completed it in three, working long hours on the last day. The installation is quite professional and appears will last the life of the house. The job was completed just prior to a very heavy rainfall and he inquired afterward if the seed and topsoil had survived the downpour."

"Justin was fantastic to work with and made quick work of the report I needed with minimal notice for a building permit approval after a 2-inch discrepancy led to a cascade of problems. I had his report in hand the very next day with multiple options of what was structurally acceptable. After the inspector took exception to something unrelated during the same build, Justin had the answer I needed right off the top of his head when I asked. I highly recommend him!"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Milwaukee, WI

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
