"Randy Gardner responded immediately to my request for a visit and estimate. He looked inside and outside, and told me I did not need to go to the expense of the drain tile and waterproofing. He said the house (build in 1917) had settled, and that the sidewalk along the side of the house was sinking toward the house, resulting in the water in the basement. He recommended removing the existing sidewalk, and laying new concrete with the proper slope away from the house. Although it was not a cheap fix, it was half of what I feared it would cost. Scott walked through options and provided honest recommendations for the garage floor and foundation repair that was needed. "Basement Waterproofing project completed by Tom Bever and his Maltese totally professional crew. Split level home required the team to make constant trips up/down recently installed Oak stairs, which they fully protected with cloth tarp, and work area was sealed off floor to ceiling with tapped plastic barrier, as well as covering all items that could not be removed from work area. The team was in and out in 2 days. An almost immediate test due to significant rain levels which previously would have seen water infiltration were handled without a hint of moisture by the installed drainage & sump system. Totally professional, clean job. A pleasure to work with. Timing could not have been better."

"Sam came and looked at my house, took pictures and said he would provide me with a quote for painting the trim on my house. He called me back a week or two later to say that he thought painting would be too expensive & said that he would get me quote on wrapping the trim in aluminum. 

After a discussion with Sam, he has assured me that he did send the quote in a timely manner and I, for some reason, did not receive it.  I am impressed that he has taken so much time to discuss all of this with me.

While he did not do the work I needed done - he seems to be a good and honest businessman and seems to be truly concerned that I was not satisfied. I may or may not look to him again for work in the future- I would recommend him to others, because I believe that his company does good work and the bid, when I saw it, was respectable. I'm sure if Sam's company had performed the work it would have been impressive.

"John, at Radiant Radon was very professional and passionate about his work. He was the only contractor who was willing to come out to my house and explain the process and where the mitigation system would go. "Fair & Square was excellent. We had a very large scope which included repainting the entire interior, rip out and rebuild of the kitchen and three bathrooms, and removal of several half-walls. The work was done to high quality and any problems were quickly addressed. The Fair & Square approach includes a project manager to do all of the coordination and planning so there's a 1-stop shop. They are not so big that they're inflexible and not so small that you feel there will be a lot of unpredictability. Also we found Fair & Square to be very adaptable to the level of cost that we wanted to have, and not either locked into being high end or budget. We were very pleased with the detail and accuracy of the cost and schedule estimate, including use of a contingency. This provided a level of predictability that we've rarely seen in this kind of major work scope. There are specific contacts in their office to help with selection and procurement of materials and with follow up warranty service. Both are very convenient and responsive. The use of a project manager and the additional staff does add some expense however it pays off in quality, predictability, and responsiveness. Toward the end there were a couple of problems where we had to reach out to the owner (Mike Otto) for help and he was very responsive and helpful. Overall a great experience and we highly recommend Fair & Square for your home renovation."

Vitaly (owner) came to my house to see what needed to be done and to offer suggestions.  He was polite and professional.

Viktor came to work on time a few days later to start the demolition. The dumpster was not there the first day so he came back the next day to start. No problem.  Viktor and his helper worked very hard to demolish  the bathroom.  They cleaned up each day before they left.

There was some mold on an adjacent bedroom wall , which was not surprising, since the some of the old bathroom shower tiles were missing.  Vitaly thought that we could find some kind of a solution to get rid of the mold, but  none of the stores had a powerful enough formula to do the job right.  After a  few days, I decided it was best to have that wall removed completely.   Vitaly asked Viktor to give a bid to remove the bedroom wall.  Viktor did not want to take on that job.  Vitaly then gave me a name of a contractor who specializes in mold removal.  I hired that company and in about another week, the mold wall was carefully removed and replaced with another bedroom wall. 

Before the bedroom mold wall was removed, Viktor installed an outside vent cap for the bathroom fan.   There is a small section of roof (approx. 18 inches) with a pitch extending from the side of the house above the bathroom ceiling where the vent roof cap could be placed.

 Viktor installed  a vent cap, but it was the wrong type.  He installed a wall vent cap, not a roof vent cap.  Also, the vent was installed over the shingles and flashing, instead of under them. If left as is, wind and rain  would be able to come into the exhaust pipe or leak under the shingles and enter the bath fan/house.  I notified Vitaly about it.  He called me back and said that they would fix it.  He said that Viktor told him that he had installed that type of vent before.   I said to Vitally that I would remove it and install a new, correct type of vent.

After the bedroom wall was replaced, I decided  that I did not want to use Vitaly's services any more.  I called Viatly and talked to him about the situation and my decision.  He was very polite and listened to what I had to say.  We agreed that it was best to settle on the charges I owed him and move on.    

 I've called Angie's List a few times, since, to talk about the situation.    One of the things that I found from the Angie's List Representative was that Vitaly's company had already been paid by Angie's List.  This surprised me, since I thought a contractor would get paid for a Big Deal only AFTER the work had been done.

  At this point, I want to be sure that Vitaly's company gets paid for the work they did. (they have been paid, amount is unknown) 

  Also, I would like to get a refund for $3700.00     I feel that I owe Vitaly $1300.00 for the work his company did.   My figure includes an adjustment for replacing the bath fan vent and for the extra 5 days the dumpster sat in my yard.

I would appreciate a resolution to this situation so that all 3 parties can move on.  Thank you.

"I was just getting estimates for having a ductless AC system installed in my little cottage. I had a very charming man come to give me a bid. But oh my goodness, what a sales pitch. All about doing it rich this second to get this or that discount, and really putting the fear of God in me about things breaking down, and how they'll replace them no questions asked (I don't believe that for a minute). A really hard sale, and it was at least $2000 over everyone else, and generally $3000 more for a small house just needing 3 units. That's why they can offer the replacement units. But I'd rather buy an insurance package for $400 or some such thing. Not to mention, the route he suggested was quite lengthy and elaborate, and definitely not the easiest way to go about running the piping. That's the problem with someone in a suit selling something they've never actually worked on. Charming, but really savvy. I felt I knew more than he did about plumbing, which I probably do because of my work."
