"It has been over a month now since James and Jerry came and repaired my boggled attempt to install a new garage door opener. I installed the opener on a Saturday and, the install was fairly easy, but the door just did not work right. The door would catch and sometimes get tweaked, not come up all the way, or go down all the way. I called Precision on Monday and was talking with an extremely pleasant and professional scheduler. She asked if they could come out the next day, Tuesday, and I explained that it would not work with my work schedule. She then explained that they have evening appointments, and that they have an opening for 5pm Tuesday. I booked the next day appointment. About 30 minutes before the appointment I received a call from James that he was on the wat and should arrive in about 15 – 20 minutes. Upon arriving, James introduced himself and Jerry, a training technician. After showing James/Jerry the new garage door opener installation and a visual inspection of the door, James (and Jerry concurred) that the problem was the spring. Based on the age, they also recommended that I replace the rollers with newer “nylon” rollers. They wrote up the contract and started the work. Less than an hour later they had replaced all parts, had the door opening and closing and started on “optimizing” the new opener setting the travel, adjusting the belt and setting the stops. They also showed me how to lubricate the moving parts. The total repair took about 2 hours and the door has NEVER work that effortlessly or quiet! James and Jerry were the epitome of professional and knowledgeable! The company needs to video these guys and use it as a training video for others. I cannot come up with one negative from this experience starting with the call to the repair service to the follow-up email asking if everything went well! Precision Garage Door (East Bay) you need to use a 10-star, rating system so I can give you a 20! Great job! Thanks! Ron"

FAQs for garage door opener repair or adjustment projects in Santa Cruz, CA

Garage door costs range somewhat broadly, depending on the type you choose. However, you’ll also need to factor in labor costs, which vary from state to state and between pros.

A chain driven operator costs between $150 - $250. For a belt driven operator it is usually $160 - $450. A screw-driven operator is between $250-$500.

To keep garage door opener repair costs down, you should check that the whole apparatus is working normally on a regular basis. This means making sure that the tracks of your door are greased and fully operational, and that the door itself is in good condition.

Installing a new garage door opener runs from $250 to $500 at least. If your repair costs are close in cost to that range or if your garage door is 10 to 15 years old, you should probably replace it instead of repair.

However, it’s a better idea to fix your garage door opener if it’s less than eight years old or if repair costs are less than replacing.

Garage door openers usually last between 10 and 15 years. However, several factors contribute to how long your garage door opener can last. If you schedule regular inspections and practice proper care, you can maximize your garage door opener’s lifespan, saving money in the long run. As a general rule, practice the same care for your garage door opener as you would the door itself.

These tell-tale signs indicate your garage door is going bad, including:

  • Not closing or opening at all

  • The door reversing when you try to open and/or close it

  • Inconsistent opening and closing; more noise than usual (grinding, scraping, or banging)

  • Sticking or stalling when you try to open or close it

If you experience one or more of these signs, it’s time to call a professional garage door repair service.
