"We hired Paolo to remodel our kitchen/dining room/living room area. He did a wonderful job making my vision a reality! I gave him a drawing on a sheet of paper and he made everything happen! His crew is tidy and super nice. Definitely want to hire again!!!"

"I had the basement taken care of by JES about 3 years ago, and this year they came and performed the annual system inspection. The service tech, Derrick Schmidt, was extremely professional and not only performed the inspection in an efficient manner, but also answered my questions and explained options for future basement care. I would definitely recommend JES to anyone with a basement issue. The work done has kept the basement dry and comfortable, with no problems."

"Everything looks absolutely gorgeous! Finishing work had great attention to detail. Plumbing was corrected to make our chosen bathroom fixtures work for the space. Drywall, paint, ceilings, floors, new french door to outside, new siding and paint outside, new covered porch, all done with professional timing and attitude. They worked with us and gave helpful suggestions and even fit in extra projects along the way. Would definitely hire them again!"

"You will be most fortunate to have Greg Bassett and his team work on your home. He does high quality work at a fair price. He gets back to you when he says he will, shows up and finishes when he promises, keeps the work area clean, offers great ideas/suggestions when asked, and takes pride in his work. We could not be more pleased with the major kitchen remodel he did for us."

"<p>We've used C'ville remodel for 3 different projects on our 1890's home. They are really fun to work with, had excellent ideas to meet our needs, and were never upset when I changed my mind on something!  They were mindful when I wanted to keep the character of our home as the most important part of the project and when I needed to keep the budget as the priority. </p> <p>They took care of all permits and were great working with the city inspectors with some tricky issues.</p> <p>The work is top notch. If they don't do it themselves (only the gas and insulation for my projects) they bring in the best and oversee everything.</p> <p>I have two small children and always felt comfortable with them in my home. </p> <p>2 of the projects came in under budget and 1 on budget but we added a significant amount of work.  All of the projects took about 25-50% longer than they initially quoted us, but I expected this as our house is very old and work is always more complicated than you originally think. My advice is just add at least 30% on to whatever time any contractor says and you'll be good.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>They were also willing to let us do a lot of the work ourselves and were available to give expertise and lend tools when needed.</p> <p>All around we love Joel and Willie and our kids ask frequently when they'll be back.</p> <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Shipman, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
