"The person I first talked to explained everything the workers would do. On the day they were scheduled to come, they were on time and did a great job. When I went down to see what they had done, I was very pleased, and the basement looked very clean. I would recommend JES to anyone who has any kind of foundation problem."

My name is Aaron Nesbitt, 43yr old Army Veteran, turned contractor. My first experience doing construction was in 5th grade, helping my father build a barn for our horses in Arkansas. After working for construction companies from Colorado, to Louisiana after the hurricanes, I’ve learned there is a lack of craftsmanship in our industry. My goal is to change that one project at a time. Our mission is to exceed your expectations by delivering clean, quality craftsmanship that goes beyond your imagination. I hope you’ll give us the opportunity to make your vision, a reality.

"Project went very well overall.  I was competiing four different contractors from Angie's list and David was the first to return my call, the first to actually meet up with me on my busy schedule after work one day.  He asked detailed questions about my goals and he provided me quotes that covered the spectrum from "spruce it up" to "make it like new."  I went with the new option, and his team came on time every day starting around 0730 and going past 1700 some days.  They worked well with me having a dog door to let my dogs out periodically and not let them get out of the gated yard while they were working.  David also brought me several large pieces of siding so that I could be sure of the color.  The dark small strips looked much lighter on the house when large and outside- I went with our darkest option, and it still turned out a bit lighter than I had expected.  He gave me options for the house edges, but basically took care of the details everywhere else without needing a decision from me.  he Took all the badly damaged siding off, replaced rotted wood underneath, wrapped the entire house in breathable plastic protective coating, resided everything including my front and back proches- and soffited the gables there as well.  His team also rebuilt a termite-damaged chiminey, repaired my garage door from where one of my renters had hit it (and covered it up), and installed new brass lighting that I bought.  They also did an add-on job of removing an old storage shed and debris throughout the yard for a small additional fee.  He came back several times to address small issues I saw with the project as it progressed and did not ask for final payment until I was satisfied with all that he had done.  Only downside to the whole job was the remaining nails and staples that I have found throughout the yard.  They did a very thorough clean-up, but there was much more that a magnetic roller would have helped catch.  Great work, and I know he would address issues now if I had any- but it was well done the first time and has already weathered several "storms" without fail.  Nice leader, and nice team."

"It was a breeze from start to finish, Lloyd took care of everything, If things did not quite  work out how we envisioned  Lloyd came up with some great ideas, he moved walls, moved doors, anything and every thing to keep us happy, all the while trying to stay in budget. With any older home (47yrs in this case) you will run into problems, old wiring rotting wood etc Lloyd took care of everything."

"Have worked w/Bob Stahl since 2012 (Stahl Cabinets is now Neptune Kitchen and Bath), and was so pleased with his work that we've not used anyone else since. After some cosmetic improvements to our kitchen, powder room, and (ex) wet bar area in 2012, we decided in 2017 to upgrade our master bath, and the result was beyond our expectations (7 pix-) - could not be more pleased! We then, earlier this year/2019, decided to upgrade the guest bathroom (4 pix); convert the old brick/ceramic tile, non-working fireplace (1 pix; gas insert includes backlit/colored pebbles); bar area (1 pix, added wine racks); powder room vanity (1 pix); as well as change the kitchen cabinetry color (from polyurethane golden oak to white/peripheral cabinets, and mint green/island) (2 pix) ... again, outstanding results! Finally, we installed built-in shelving in the FROG (office), with a library ladder - quite pleased! Constant communication on both schedule and cost (on target, no surprises) - will not work with anyone else!. We recommend Neptune unconditionally!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Suffolk, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
