During my home inspection, I notice leaks in the ceiling dry wall. The Realtor called his roofing inspection team to inspect the roof. They did not know where the leak source was and thought it was from a satellite dish. The roofing guy also estimated there were 3 years of roofing life left. 4 months later, roof leaks start to occur during heavy rain. I was not happy. I thought the roofer was an expert because this is what they do day in and out. I was wrong with that assumption. June of 2018, Homefix Custom Remodeling knocked on my door and asked if I wanted a free quote for roofing, windows, or any other home repair. I told myself it wouldn't hurt to get a free quote since it will be my first quote. I had the appointment made the same day for the evening. HCR's sales team was running a little late so therefore, the Vice President, Mr. Michael A. showed up around 8pm. He sat down and explained the importance of roofing, the black streaks called Gloeocapsa Magma which we commonly see on most roofing, and different qualities of shingles out there on the market. Many home owners think roof shingles are just roof shingles and that is it. With approximately over 30 years of experience and being a roofer working beside his father, Michael A. knows his stuff and his competitors. He showed quotes from customers who got estimate from others roofing companies. He showed me the flaws in the contracts such as the warranty section. He educated me on the importance of roofing and the components that goes together to make a long lasting roof. Components include the underlayment, which act as a barrier for the roof deck. Lower end underlayment, such as felt paper maybe water resistance where as higher end such as a synthetic type are waterproof and provides superior protection. Approximately 3 hours later of educating me. I decided to get my roof installed. I knew the longer I waited the worst my roofing will get and eventually lead to molding. This was a great decision and investment. My roof would be guaranteed 50 years from HCR's superior no nonsense warranty. Most builders grade roof barely last 15 years and most roofing company offer horrible warranty so be CAREFUL. They may say the roof is under warranty, but how about the labor? Unfortunately, the time my roof was installed was in a rainy month. HCR kept in contact with me to reschedule the installation. My roof was installed in approximately 4 hours. The crew did an excellent job installing the shingles and cleaning up the area. The next day, my gutters were installed also by HCR. They got sheet metal and bended to the length they need. I got the massive 6 inch gutters. This was a game changer for my roofing system. The gutters were installed in the afternoon and 1 hour after installation, it poured down really hard. I watched the gutters and water came down smoothly compared to before where it will just overflow. I compared it to my neighbor’s 4 inch gutters and water was just over flowing out the gutters. "My wife and I purchased our house about 18 months ago. Back in March of this past year, we discovered that the previous owner had concealed some rot in the exterior walls of the house that had come from a leak somewhere along the roof line. We were initially referred to Ben and his company by a friend of ours who he had done some previous work for. Ben came out, inspected the roof and determined told us he believed that the leak had been coming in around the chimney, but had been corrected by the previous owner.  We asked him at the time if he could handle repairing the wall, and he said that while they might be able to find a way to fix it, they were not comfortable taking the job because, not being framers, they did not want to take on the job and have to tell us later they could not complete it.  This actually very much impressed my wife and I, since most people we found to look at that project were more than happy to take the money even if they were not really qualified for the work.
Several months later, we started having water leaking into our house again, this time on the other side of the home. Given that we very much appreciated their honesty the first time, we called Ben and his company.  They came right out, rearranging their schedule to help us with the pool that was slowly forming in our bathroom. With the weather being extremely rainy, as well as other factors, Ben made several trips out to our home to ensure that they could accurately diagnose the problem. They discovered that while the primary problem was coming from a window we had recently had replaced, the company that had replaced the roof for the previous owner had cut some corners which was leading to all of the edges of the roof starting to rot. He took the time to actually take me and show me the problem and explain what caused it.  He gave us a few options, and in the end we decided to replace the roof to ensure we could fix the rot. Ben and his team came out on 17 July and were able to do all of the work needed in a day, including the pitched roof replacement, replacement of some of the gutters, repairs to a flat roof we have over an addition, and the installation of gutter toppers.  Additionally, our window company was supposed to come out on the same day to fix the window. When they did not show on time, Ben offered to fix the windows for us free of charge, if they didn't come by the end of the day just to make sure it was done right.
When the crew left, the property was spotless! And throughout the whole process, we had nothing but amazing service from Ben and the team. They go out of their way to explain everything to you and show you how and why they are doing what they are doing. We would highly recommend them to anyone!

I contacted George's Painting because of all the great reviews on Angie's List and am very happy that I did. I at first contacted them via email and received a prompt reply saying George would be out at 10:00 am on a Monday. I emailed back that that would be a good time for me. At 10:30 no one had come so I found a cell phone number for George who answered immediately and apologized and offered to come right away, which he did. He had not gotten the message about the 10:00 am appointment, which can happen when others are involved. George arrived and quickly understood what we needed done: we have 5 dormer windows that all had rotted wood around the glass as well as the sidesf. George suggested replacing it with PVC which will last many times longer than wood, and I was thrilled with that idea. He also suggested PVC for the outside frame of our little garage door, which had rotted away. He discussed using the highest quality Sherwin Williams paint, as well as washing the siding which had never been washed before. I was concerned that a power wash would take the paint off of our 30 year old siding but he said it wouldn't and he was right. I had had another company on Angie's list (the same company who had painted our house about 6 years ago) give me an estimate a week before and they never offered to wash the siding, only the mildewed part that they would paint. The other company said I could wash the siding myself and never offered to replace the rotted wood with PVC. They wanted to do what they had done the last time they were out which was to fill it with bondo or wood putty.  George repeated many times that they would make the house beautiful and do whatever it took to make it that way. He explained that first a crew would come out to wash the house, then another crew of carpenters to find and replace all the rotted wood, then another crew to scrape and paint. I did mention that I would like the window sills and any other surface sanded, not just scraped, but unfortunately this did not happen. I think they would have if I had asked them to but I assumed they would since I had mentioned it to George. However, the final painting job looks very good, although the little garage door really should have been sanded. However, this was the only minor thing that happened that I feel could have been done better.

The guys that washed the house were extremely careful and used a low pressure wash to methodically squirt every piece of siding from top to bottom. They did not miss one spot and I cannot believe how beautiful and clean the house came out. I even joked that now it did not need painting since it truly looked clean and fresh just from the chlorox wash. They were able to get all of the green off and every speck of black mildew, even under the eaves. These guys spent half a day just doing this.

The next work day, the carpenter Joel came and tested every piece of wood for rot. Wherever there was rot, he removed it all and cut a precise piece of PVC from the large sheets and long framing lengths he brought with him. He had all of the right equipment and was very good at measuring and cutting. He honestly worked for 5 full days and replaced twice as much as I thought there was to be replaced. I even called George and said I didn't know there was so much rot and I expected to pay more than the estimate because Joel was truly finding more - including window sills and the undersides of our mansard roof. George said he would charge just for the extra material they had to buy, which is what he did.

The next week, a large crew came and George showed me the Emerald Brand of Sherwin Williams paint and the two kinds of caulking they would be using on the house. He also pointed out that he first put primer on, then the paint, and didn't just use paint with primer in it. I had been worried about the caulking because I know that that is as important as paint for protecting against moisture, and the guys came through. Every gap was found and caulked with new white caulking appropriate for the material (siding, brick, or wood) that needed to be caulked. They must have had 6 tubes of caulking for our house. The guys worked from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm and finished in one day. George even surprised me by showing me a gallon of paint he had had especially mixed to paint our brown shutters and front door! I had not even asked for this, thinking we would just paint the white trim, and at first I was reluctant because I didn't think painting plastic shutters was a good idea, but George tested a small sample and I was sold. When the painting was all finished, the shutters and front door turned out to be the Piece de resistance! It made our house look 20 years younger and as fresh as a model home.

"This project was covered by our homeowners's insurance, and Crown's rep worked with us on cost so that we would not have to pay out for 2 separate deductibles. Overall, the people I dealt with were very professional. Our only complaint is that the repair work took much longer to complete than originally estimated. We contacted our insurance company in September, hired the contractor by early October, but took until February for completion. Some of the delay on the roof repair was weather-related, but delay on finishing the interior seemed more related to having multiple subcontractors."
