"First of all he does good work as far as I know. Now he overcharged me for a part needed. I gave him cash for the part. Then he said he could not fix the outdoor outlet that I wanted for Christmas lights. He charged me 195.00 for visit and travel time. ( Whitesboro to north Utica).Last time he charged and insisted on $95.00 for emergency visit. I have had this house 35 yrs. I wenoutside after he left and the entire plug. housing and wires were gone! I should should?ve checked before he left. I texted him and he said the outlet was ?unsafe and illegal?. He did not tell me this before he took the outlet . He said he would to fix the outlet charge me another $ 225.00 to fix. I do not know why he did this to me. Now The wires are gone - I do not know how to retrieve them to have an outdoor plug/outlet for Christmas lights. So I am stuck. "I called and my timing must have been perfect. 2 technicians showed up 30 minutes later. They put on shoe covers which I appreciate. They opened up the unit and checked the flame and spark. That must have been enough since the unit started working. They checked to make sure the propane was flowing and cleaned the condensation pan. Within 30 minutes after arriving, they were done. I plan to have them come back in a couple of months to maintain the ductless splits for this summer. What they charge for the service is very reasonable given that I had contacted a competitor and received a quote that more than 2x what I paid."

I figured if it didn't work, my machine is old and I would be out $40, not the $100+ to have a tech come out and just diagnose the problem. I am pretty handy and my washer is old anyway, so if it is broken, I have to get a new one anyway. My tech, Steve, was great! He predicted what was wrong after listening to the machine, calmly walked me through dismantling the machine and when we got down to the motor, he was right! He sent me a link to the part I would need, and let me know to contact them again if I needed help installing it. My machine works even better than before it broke, its beautifully quiet and efficient. I will definitely be saving this company for any future repairs on appliances I may need. The service was $40 + the part cost, which was about $8."

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.
Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.
You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.
Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
