"We had Green Shield install our new composite deck this summer. The crew was absolutely outstanding! I had a lot of questions and concerns and they were always happy to answer or talk things over with me. Our deck is exactly what we wanted and we couldn't be happier with the results!"

"Awesome! HIGHLY recommend! Rick came to my home for an estimate. He arrived promptly and he gave me a lot of good information which helped me make a decision. He educated me about what to look for in windows as well as what set Home Improvement apart from other vendors. The in-home visit was followed by a trip to their showroom to see the full size window. Installation day was excellent. They arrived on time, started work promptly and completed the installation of three windows in a few hours. They were very respectful of my home and my pets. Their clean up was spot on both inside and outside. Owner Matt was on-site and available for most of the job. Follow up after the installation was excellent. I think one hallmark of an outstanding company is not only how well they do the work but also how well they respond to a problem. There was an issue with one of the windows and it was resolved promptly and very satisfactorily. If you are considering window replacement, give Matt and Rick a call. Excellent service. Excellent product. I love my new windows! They will be replacing my downstairs windows this spring."

"Researched Wood Renovation's reviews on Angie's List and noted it's high ratings. Requested an estimate from Steve, the owner. He was punctual for our appointment- provided insight into the deck's maintenance history (this home was purchased in Nov. 2009- prior owners provided no maintenance history- so, it is assumed the deck had not been maintained). Steve recommended the type of stain they will mix and customize for each job and type of wood. He provided his quote in writing and honored the Angie's List discount. I did not seek out additional estimates- hired Wood Renovation and scheduled the work. Steve was not present at the 2 day job- sent 2 emploiyees who washed the deck on the first day, then replaced several boards and were to secure others with screws or nails and stain the deck floor and steps up to the deck, as the railings are painted. Their truck was parked in front of my house in Fishers- they mixed the stain with water at/ near their truck location and reported they had "spilled a little" in the street. I was not presnet when this occurred, it was reported to me later. Whan I arrived home later in the afternoon, it was apparent that liquid matching the stain color of my deck had been spilled near my driveway and had trickled down, then pooled in front of my neighbor's driveway entrance. No liquid came in contact with anyone's private property- and the stain did not alter the asphalt, but caused discoloration. Other than being a little unsightly, I did not think any remediation was necessary, since the stain will fade/ wear away from constant traffic on the street (it is the only entrance/ exit to a cul-de-sac) and weather. However, my neighbors became livid regarding the stain- and alleged it was going to ruin an upcoming dinner event at their home in several weeks. They insisted the stain be removed or covered up, as it was detracting from the beauty of their house and landscaping- and the street's discoloration was unacceptable. The street is actually the property of the town of Fishers- it is not owned or maintained by the HOA. I accepted responsibility for the stain, although I did not see it happen and did not participate in the occurrence. After many, many phone calls and emails with the HOA and Steve, it was agreed that Wood Renovation would (at no cost) cover the stain with asphalt sealer. Wood Renovation applied it appropriately (in my opinion), and even though the street is highly travelled there are no tire tracks though the sealer and it is not messy. But my neightbors became infuritated because the sealer is black, against asphalt that is light gray and "became a sea of black". Since I have chosen to no longer communicate with those neighbors, I do not know if they are seeking additional remediation from Wood Renovation- I do know they met with the HOA Board to discuss this and complain. This was an unfortunate incident, which Wood Renovation truly did try to make right. However, I will not hire this company again for any wood staining or deck maintenance work. Regarding the deck, some of the stain did not "take" on some of the boards, although it is not real noticeable. And recently several of the boards seem to be warping and are becoming loose again."

"The gentlemen that showed up through a Big Deal gave me an estimate, then went to the store to purchase the cedar.  They purchased some of the wrong sizes, but went back on their own time and purchased the correct size.  The job entailed more than we originally thought due to some rotting that was underneath the deck.  They replaced the wood, cleaned up their space well and left it in good shape.

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Waynetown, IN

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
