My house was wired with a GE alarm system and the previous owner refused to give me the access code.  My Smart Security replaced the controller box with their own (2 Gig Smart Panel) and simply used the existing doors and windows sensors. 
We love the new system!  We can arm and disarm remotely with our smart phones or via the web!  It has many nice features including 2-way communication so if the alarm goes off the monitoring company can talk to you directly via the device.  The system has its own cell phone unit thus it does not need a phone line.
On the other side, I feel that the fees I paid for the installation and monthly monitoring are higher than other companies I found on Angie's List. Also My Smart Security signs you up for a 3-year agreement and their tech tries to convince you to go for 5 to "keep current prices".  I took the 3-year contract.  The next day another company that I left a message for while shopping called back and it turned out their contact is for 6 months only!  Also their monthly fees were a lower.  Because I liked the Smart Security tech I decided to keep the contract even though I felt that I did not get the best possible deal.
Throughout this process I learned a few things that you might find helpful:
1) My Smart Security uses Alarm.com for the technology - Alarm.com provides the equipment including the cameras and they provide the app that gives you control over the alarm system.
2) My Smart Security uses a third-party company called Monitronics for the monitoring service.
3) My Smart Security does the system installation and the service.  So basically they just put the pieces together and install the system.  Other companies do the exact thing!
4) The video cameras are very expensive addition at $400 each.  I had those installed initially then I discovered I can buy better cameras from Amazon for $100 each, so I called them back and had the cameras removed!
Another negative thing, My Smart Security charges a trip charge if you need them to come back after the installation.  I use ADT for another property and they do not charge a fee for maintenance calls.
Over all I recommend My Smart Security because of their excellent tech and caring president, and also because of the great smart system they install.

"Frontpoint great in selling me my new security monitoring system and they gave me a great discount. I needed to install this system myself and they were also very helpful in helping me when I was making mistakes during installation (guess what? it seems that the numbering of the sensors does matter!). But it is the billing where they are falling short. First of all, you need to keep a credit card on file with them - let's hope that they do a good job at protecting my information. Second, when I added my bank account info so that they could just debit my checking account for my monthly service charge ($44.99), they completely botched that up. They called me to tell me that my credit union denied the payment but when I called my credit union, they told me that no attempt to debit my account had been made. Ultimately Frontpoint charged my credit card for the April payment (which is actually unacceptable to me). My credit union advised that I was better off using their web bill pay system but it seems that I am unable to do that. My only choice with Frontpoint is to give them my credit card and bank account info so that they can charge my account each month - there is no way for me to send the money myself. Last thing - I was not actually able to talk to someone from Billing - only was able to talk to a "customer service rep" who could not explain what really happened. Let's hope that the May payment goes better..."

"I called Absolute Protection to install a new alarm system in my home. I wanted a system that was up to date with technology. I ended up with total connect and interactive services. I can arm and disarm my system by my phone, my kids, family members and housekeeper all have their own code and I can see when they come in and when they leave. Its been a life saver with sleep, I can go to bed and check to make sure my kids where in by their curfew by when they turned the alarm off!! "Protect America Alarm Systems are wireless home security systems that are so advanced and yet uncomplicated that the consumer can install all components to the system themselves. Tech support is provided which makes installation easy and very user friendly. The system is monitored and response to alarm signal is quick and nearly immediate. ( I accidentally set it off a couple times having forgotten that it was set when we left home). I've had a couple different systems in my homes over the years which were "professionally" installed; one was wired the other wireless. I install this myself with the help of tech support, I'm 65years old in good health but of course not as agile as I was a few years ago, but this system was a piece of cake for me to install. Every access to my home has been covered as well as some interior sensors. All of which have functioned flawlessly from day one!

I responded to an ad for a $99 ADT alarm installation and ended up buying a $1900 system. My monthly monitoring fee doubled to $56 a month. It does include smoke and fire monitoring which the previous system didn't. System was installed on time. But I now have a re-occurring fault with the front door sensor. This coming Thursday will be the 5th time Protect Your Home will be attempting to fix the same problem. I called ADT to get a billing adjustment, and they told me I have to call back after the service call to request an adjustment. Strange, but even I (at 70-years old) can get to the alarm history and see the number of faults that have occurred over the past 8-10 weeks.

After foolishly signing a 2-year contract, I found all of the alarm equipment could be purchased at Radio Shack for 1/3 to 1/2 the price ADT charges. It appears the alarm companies are primarily interested in selling alarm systems and monitoring contracts; all of the actual monitoring is done by computer.

The service calls are easy to make and the response time is pretty good, but I'm tired of getting service for the same problem with no relief from ADT.

My advice is to shop around for alarm systems, especially for the monitoring contracts. Beware of the fine print that automatically renews your contract unless you proactively cancel during the last month.
