"Mottern did a fantastic job designing and installing a large flagstone-on-concrete patio for us. The work included excavating and leveling the site, pouring and re-enforcing the slab, and selecting and purchasing the stone, brick and other materials. In addition to the patio, Mottern also filled in an approx. 12 sq/ft section of brick wall where a door had been converted to a window. The filled-in brick and mortar matches the original 50-year old wall perfectly. Overall, the entire Mottern crew was prompt, responsive, professional, and very skillful. We would definitely use Mottern again."

"CM replaced 70 linear fee of my block retaining wall that was in serious disrepair from previous owners here in South Arlington (wall built circa 1961). CM was able to start work right away.  CM and I agreed beforehand that I would have the stumps removed by my tree contractor, but that contractor wasn't able to get his machine right up to the stump because of how it was situated on the slope.  Although removing the stump was not included in my contract with CM, they were able to get them removed anyway so that they could do their retaining wall work.  And they didn't charge me any extra for this! Plus, since I was cited by Arlington County for the disrepair of my existing wall, I needed for the new wall to be less than 24" (to avoid a permit). When CM was building the wall, there were a few spots that were going over a bit.  I raised this concern with CM and they were extremely attentive to my concerns and remedied the situation right away.  CM started only 2 business days after I signed the contract, which was great.  They cleaned up well, were very careful of my neighbor's property (which was very close to my project), and completed the project within the estimated time frame.  But more than anything, my experience with them showed that I could trust them with getting it done right and addressing my concerns - they really seem to know that well. Also, their pricing was very competitive compared to the four other quotes I received.

The job consisted of removing an existing concrete patio and then installing a new patio and a 60-foot walkway using Westchester pavers. In addition, a 25-foot retaining wall incorporating a new PVC drainage system was installed under an existing deck. The job required a significant amount of landscaping and regrading of our backyard. "Julio and his crew were the epitome of professional service. I cannot emphasize how thorough, punctual and knowledgeable they, collectively, know their artisan talents. I needed to have part of a brick wall that had collapsed replaced with new. Julio carefully examined the other remaining brick wall, and pointed out several cracks ( due to groundhogs burrowing from underneath, further weakening the structure overall) . As Julio pointed this out to me , I agreed that it was only a matter of time before the rest of the wall would fail. I decided to have half of the wall replaced with stone block . As my budget allows, I will definitely have the remaining brick wall replaced with the new stone wall. Since I had a positive reaction with Julio and his team, we discussed other projects that I knew needed attention. I inherited a 200+ year old house with my eventual desire to sell in the next year. It is my observation through Julio that I bit the bullet and trusted him and his crew to repair stucco, reinforce the home’s foundation, replace screens on an enclosed deck porch, replace outdoor turf, repoint the mortar on the brick façade of the house and the brick front porch and walkway. "Existing plants (azaleas and iris) were moved and replaced without a problem. Carefully worked around old wisteria vine without issues. Wall was installed exactly as expected. Encountered unexpected problems with plugged existing drainage pipes which needed to be replaced. This was done at a minimum of extra cost and the replaced drainage system was better than the one originally in place. This understandably delayed completion of project by about a week which was otherwise on time and within budget. Staff was pleasant, knowledgeable and accessible. I definitely would use them again."
